Juggling ambition and domesticity: Can women have it all?

On We The People, we discuss what does the 'have it all' debate mean for women in India. Are women more trapped in the work-life balance debate than men? Does the home pull back women from professional rise? And why the guilt syndrome? Actor and BJP MP Kirron Kher, Joint Managing Director of Apollo Hospitals Sangita Reddy, Former Chairperson of Royal Bank of Scotland Meera Sanyal, Director of Department of Assisted Reproduction & Genetics at Jaslok Hospital Dr Firuza Parikh, Managing Director of Ortel Communications Jagi Mangat Panda, Managing Partner of Counselage Suhel Seth and Economist Dr Surjit Bhalla, along with an engaging audience, debate whether women can have it all.

These people should ask these questions to women of Kerala where every other woman is a nurse or aspires to be one and has no choice but to work. They have managed the so called 'work life balance' for ages. Men are very much happy to look after the children after sending their wives to the 'Gulf' ironically for a state which is known to have a large amount of liquor consumption. Indian courts would not usually allow men with such actions near children and would happily label them as 'evil influence' to society.

But that's the whole point of the debate. Women don't have the choice. Even the most educated women at some point of their career have to abandon it ..to raise a child and they are looked down when they choose career over babies. The whole mindset has to change then only we can have equal respect for the housework.

the mindset of some men around home/family responsibilities is extremely wrong - they don't help around the house with chores, expect women to 'raise' children and then perform 'conjugal duties'. Advice to women - choose a husband who doesn't have such a mindset and believes that a man is the 'dominant' partner in a relationship and the woman is the 'submissive' partner in a relationship. Men and women should share 50-50 of the household chores, spending time with kids and also with work and income. It's about a relationship of equals, not a dominant-submissive relationship.

You cannot enforce it. Every family has their own problem & dont call it male domination Not every man can take household chores after coming from 10 hours work but there are some people There are families which have working women also that doesnt mean were working women is not there it is male domination

I really like Barkha Dutt, however, I was quite disappointed with the way she ran this panel. I heard more from her than I did from the panel and others. She also interrupted a lot sometimes trying to interject her own point of view. As I mentioned earlier that I like her and I have seen many of hers one to one interviews which, I enjoyed. She needs to take a step back and let others she has invited, speak. Give direction to the discussion and bring it all together by saying as few words as possible. Don't get me wrong I love listening to her. If there was a program where she would pick a topic and talk about it for 15 minutes, I'll watch it. This, however, is not that kind of program. She doesn't need to be so much in the forefront. I am only half way through and I'll watch the rest. I'll also watch a couple more of these programs. If the same trend continues then sadly I'll stop. Edit: I've never been more annoyed with Barkha Dutt. LET OTHERS SPEAK. Stop interfering, let other finish before interjecting.

Plenty of rural girls can't even to finsih school because of this. Many rural husbands are abusive and there are no NGO, courts and police who support them. In rural society women who left hers husband is considered bad, infertile women are blamed, while men are allowed to beat wives and force them into intercourse.

Modernity in India and western countries help Islamic countries to gain ground by polygamy and producing many children. On the contrary, modernity in India has resulted in career hungry women, who after into job, fight for equal pay and for equal pay marry late and think children are not necessary. Now in India urban hindus are also into live in relationship, no interest for marriage despite good financial conditions, leading a life which is against biological clock late night parties, getting up late, sitting for long hours, all this result in infertility, low hindu population levels.....................

In rural society women who left hers husband is considered bad, infertile women are blamed, while men are allowed to beat wives and force them into intercourse. Plus population in rural India among nonmuslim communities are very high . High population leads to poverty, and family with many children consider kids as a "one mouth to feed", not a precious person.
