Judy Reeves on Taking Pen in Hand-How to be a Writer Who Writes

Judy Reeves's holistic approach addresses every aspect of what makes creativity possible. If you want to write a novel, a screenplay, a short story--if you want to write anything, the first step is to start writing. The next step is the tricky one and the one where most would-be writers trip up: keep writing. Writer, teacher and writing practice provocateur, Judy Reeves is the author of four books on the craft, most recently the Revised Edition of A Writer's Book of Days, A Spirited Companion & Lively Muse for the Writing Life. She'll discuss the concept of writing practice and offer tips and techniques on how to discover what you want to write about and how to be a writer who writes every day. www.judyreeveswriter.com

This book and this person is probably one of the single most important people I could recommend to any creative writer or maybe just any creative in general. Certainly this should be a much more flourishing and insightful comment, but I just wanted to say how much I highly recommend her and her book “A Writers Book of Days” even for just the writing prompts alone. If you’re looking for a spark of imagination, this will give it to you.

She is so lovely, so organic in her approach. How I love her. She engages with the explication of the nuanced impulse to write and the attendant impediments. In the end, writing is the natural extension of an inner story - the natural impulsion toward narrative. For those among us possessed of linguistic power, the impulsion could be the impulse to shape or vivify the efflorescence of ideas and personal impressions. - Godfrey Silas

I like to free up my mind by writing while listening to classical music and especially math rock. it helps me to think when I'm listening to songs that don't have words, it's like it frees up my stickler side so I can write a little easier with out worrying about little mistakes. This video is super awesome!

Instrumental rock/post-rock for me. Though recently I've been listening to one of those relaxation things on youtube, 7 hours of rain and thunderstorm. There's even less influence on the story or your thought patterns. It's like white noise I guess, but just more pleasant to listen to. ^^

"The writer, perhaps more than any of his fellow artists, has access to the human subconscious. His words sink deep, shaping dreams, easing the pain of loneliness, banishing incantations and omens, keeping alive the memories of the race, providing intimations of immortality, nourishing great anticipations, sharpening the instinct for justice, and imparting respect for the fragility of life. These functions are essential for human evolution." - Norman Cousins bueatiful

Enjoyed the tutorial. Thanks for posting. We used to call this kind of writing exercise 'free writing' or 'automatic writing', the idea being to write freely for ten minutes or so without censoring oneself or thinking too much about it. The results can be surprising!

There was one last thing that she wanted to add, before she was interrupted by applause. She wanted to encourage the audience to do something. Great seminar indeed, it took me back to the natural way of writing process.

especailly as someone who was obsessed with writing from a ridiculously early age and was doing it constantly, mentally when not physically, ive always been so dumbfounded by the whole 'i dont have time to write' thing. if its not leisurely or fun, if its something you dont want to do, and have to make yourself, why are you toying with this idea? is it something you feel is worthy of bragging about? though i supposed you might just want a final piece and whatever respectively accompanies that...

First thing people say, when I tell them that I'm a writer is "Oh, I want to write a book someday.", because in my country every one is a: name every possible specialisation - and then lectures you about your job ;)

In using the 3-word prompt...my thoughts flowed, easily, without pause.......a friend read it and to both of our surprises, it was mystery-suspense. WHA?? My book I've been writing for several years is fiction/inspiration. How did I go there? interesting. Problem is I think ahead to much in preparing to write rather than sitting down and picking up the pen and following. Great lesson!

I love her tip on turning off the monitor and writing blindly. I know I spend far too much time rereading what I've already written. It takes my focus away from what I really need to be doing, which is more writing. I'm going to try this and I think it will be a big help. Thank you Judy.

I would probably say take advice from her, the things that resonate with you. The reality is whatever form her writing takes, she teaches, and she is published. She has produced work that people can learn from. :3
