Judy Garland - Tony Bennett - I Left My Heart In San Francisco

Ойын-сауық

July 30, 1963: Videotaping of "Episode Five" of "The Judy Garland Show" at CBS Television City, Stage 43, Hollywood.
Judy's guests for this episode were Tony Bennett and Dick Shawn.
Judy's songs: "If Love Were All" (cut before the broadcast but the footage still exists); "Yes, Indeed" (with Bennett and Shawn); "Garland-Bennett Medley" (including a duet on "I Left My Heart In San Francisco"); "My Buddy" (with Shawn); and in the "Born In A Trunk" segment: "Stormy Weather" preceded by her story about a moth flying into her mouth while on stage at the Greek Theater; and "I Will Come Back."
Judy also taped a chat with series regular Jerry Van Dyke before his duet with Shawn, but the chatting was cut. The "Tea For Two" segment taped the day before (July 29th) with Steve Allen was also deleted because it was such a success that it was decided to have him as an actual guest on a future episode and not just a cameo.
The show aired on December 15, 1963.

This man has sung professionally with both Judy Garland and Lady Gaga at age 95. A World War 2 veteran also. He is a legend and his death will be the end of an era.

I'm not young at 55, but Tony Bennet is at least one or two generations before my time. Just watched him singing w/ Lady Gaga at 95 and decided to look up a young Bennett singing his biggest hit, at the top of his form. Gotta say... this was impressive. Guys like Bennett, Sinatra, Gene Kelly... they're not just for their time, they're for ALL time. Beautiful talent.

Astonishing Tony - in his nineties, with a still healthy voice. Sad that Garland left us too soon. She can conjure up magic in a single phrase - listen to her croon the words, “Pacific shores.” A few wispy lyrics and you’re there at the Pacific shore.

Phrasing. Judy brings her nuance and acting talent to the song and that iconic voice. In the Carnegie Hall concert, I'll never tire of the four different phrasings she gives the word "baby" in I Can’t Give You Anything But Love, an arching narrative of tenderness.

No auto tune, harmonisers, microphones attached to their voice box, special effects or amplifiers. Just raw talent, skill and utter perfection from two of the greats even 60 years on the quality can be heard. Sadly, the last era of ‘the big belters’ as Le Merm said. Odd few around but this era had them all.

Garland wa taken by Tony’s wonderful voice but also by his obvious masculinity along with his sensitive loving heart. Tony saw that same heart in Garland and both felt a deep admiration for each other’s talent yes but for both seeing and feeling each other’s kind heart. They got each other without romance screwing things up out of respect for each other, respect Tony had for Garland.

Judy is glowing, she always loved Tony . The last time they saw each other was in a club in Manhattan, tony sang a bit then had drinks with Judy. As Judy walked away she turned her body toward Tony and said “ Your a pretty good singer” the understatement off the evening as a complimentMel wanted for Ton. Mel torme who was musical arranger for this very show with tony was extremely jealous of Tony because Mel wanted the reputation for being best jazz singer

I can't remember the year, maybe around 1969, that I saw Tony Bennett at the Coconut Grove. My date was a good friend named Winnie who loved Tony. When we arrived they brought a table out for us next to the stage center. This was really exciting for me at about 21 years of age or so. I had to work hard for what little money I had driving a garbage truck. Tony was in fine form and sang great! And by the way, it is a shame there is no more Coconut Grove nor Ambassador Hotel. Those were the days.
