JUDY GARLAND sings OVER THE RAINBOW at NIGHT OF 100 STARS 1964 and steals the show REMASTERED

Музыка

On July 23, 1964 Judy Garland was just out of the hospital after injuring her wrists and attended Night Of 100 Stars at the London Palladium. She wasn't scheduled to perform that night but later in the evening was introduced and asked to take a bow, which she did to a thunderous, screaming, stomping, standing ovation. After Judy sat down and the next act began the audience slowly started chanting "We want Judy. We Want Judy" drowning out everything else. Judy was asked to take another bow, and after another hysterical reaction from the audience she agreed to sing for them. Judy sang Over The Rainbow with just a piano accompanying her and she was in exquisite voice. Somebody recorded a portion of Judy's performance, unfortunately it doesn't include all of Over The Rainbow, just a healthy snippet. After Rainbow the audience wasn't through with Judy and demanded another song, she acquiesced and sang Swanee as an encore. That really did stop the show, and following that all the performers gathered around Judy as the curtain came down. The recording we have of Judy at the event is extremely muffled (and I have posted it in the past), but I have worked hard to try to make it more listenable and I think I've succeeded. This post starts with the newly remastered/enhanced edited version of the Over The Rainbow and is followed by the complete snippet, with Judy's introduction to the song.

She outshone everyone even the Beatles, who were the top performing group at that time. They didn’t count on Judy Garland, showing them all up and bringing down the house! She is “The Legend”!

Amazing! I have pictured Judy in this moment a thousand times, and while I can't see it how wonderful it is to hear it. As a teen I was Judy fanatic in small town Texas...and the news of this performance of her stopping the show in London even made it there. Superstar!

This is the event where John Lennon got mad because the audience started calling for Judy when the Beatles were supposed to play a set. He got so incensed he cruelly shouted out something like, Show them your wrists, Judy. If more of the audience had heard him, I think he’d have been set upon.
