This Judy Garland performance is exceptional, considering that the arrangement is not great. Judy is in great voice and looks incredible! She makes the material work, despite the shortcomings. When she ends the medley with "Night and Day" I get goosebumps ! There is no one today that comes close to her talent. I don't understand why some people don't get the artistry of this remarkable woman.

BRAVA! BRAVA! BRAVA! Judy was in great voice that night --- and she remembered all the words. As a huge Judy fan, whenever I find something I've never seen, I wait with bated breath all the way through, hoping she remembers the words, the blocking, the cameras, the choreography, the tempos, the intros --- and those darn stairs. And here she did! She wasn't too jacked up on uppers and down from the barbiturates. By 1965 you just never knew. But this time she did what she did best: stood on a stage and entertained the heck out of us. Thank you, Judy. 💕

Her MGM mentor and vocal arranger Roger Edens ( besides the fabulous Kay Thompson) did this let down of an arrangement. He did all her arrangements from "Dear Mr Gable" to "The Palace Medley " to "Judy's Olio" and also "Born In A Truck" for a Star Is Born.

  • @akrenwinkle

@@dylanwashington2419 You're right. Those familiar with musical arrangement can easily spot what's wrong with this. Certainly out of loyalty to Edens, as well as to her former producer Arthur Freed- who produced this Oscar telecast- Judy trudged on, surely knowing it was a losing battle and she would probably come off poorly.

Voice strong, but think it would've been better if they just gave her one or two Porter songs to remember him with. It seems like they just pasted together the big parts of all his songs and told her just go out and belt them all out. ...And we'll play a bland arrangement under you. A full song would give her moments to soften, then moments to open up and give that emotional wallop she was a genius at giving at just the right time. Nice because of Judy, but a missed opportunity it seems.

“I’m a total wreck, a worthless check, a total flop!”.... that must have been a difficult phrase to sing for Garland at this stage of her life. This arrangement is terrible and leaden but the ending was effective. Her open throat technique still allows for glorious outpouring of voice... despite the obvious ragged quality on the end of phrases. A true vaudevillian to the end.
