Judy Garland Museum starts campaign to buy back iconic ruby slippers

You've probably heard the story, almost 20 years ago, a pair of the iconic Wizard of Oz ruby slippers were stolen right here in Minnesota. As Caroline Cummings reports, now a team of curators at the Judy Garland Museum in Grand Rapids is kick-starting a campaign to get them back permanently.

As sweet as it sounds for this museum to get those slippers back, I don't think they should. There's no way a small museum can have top notch security for a 3.5 million dollar pair of slippers. This museum was stupid to disarm their own security alarms. I wouldn't trust this place to secure a 5 dollar bill.

That is an interesting point. My challenge is this: cannot they make a deal with the owner to purchase them off of the auction block? It seems if he understands the historical heritage he should be willing to sell them for $3.5 million. I mean, if someone gave me $3.5 million right now, I could rest easy the rest of my life.

@aussiefurbymogwaifan6621 they made multiple pairs for costumes and props , and there was many variations of the slippers and multiple versions of wizard of oz. They made multiple sets also because there was a problem with the slippers falling apart during filming they had to clean up rubies after each take due to when Dorothy clicked her heels the gems would fall off.

Well, it's not like these are the ONLY pair that were both in the movie and that Judy wore herself. There's the other pair that's at the Smithsonian and maybe there are more, as several were made for use in the film. But as the pair this place had were "on loan" to them in the first place, THEY aren't the owners. Plus, they didn't take very good car of them for allowing them to be stolen that easy in the first place. As such they don't deserve to get them back. Take good pictures of them and make a good copy. Then number one nobody will want to steal a copy and number two, if they do steal it, it shows how dumb they are and you don't lose another piece of cultural history again.

I'd like to propose that all of us take a moment of silence and celebrate the fact that in over 4 years he hasn't held a gun to a pregnant woman's belly, used counterfeit money, or overdosed on drugs. Although his family already blew thru the 27 million on Buying Large Mansions and Cadillac Escalades with fancy rims, his legacy continues on ❤

I want to take a moment of silence for Judy Gardner. She was forced into acting at a young age, forced to hardly eat and do drugs. Also forced by her family to abort her own baby. So if I'm going to care about this story and unlike your unrelated one it's going to about her. Plus not forget she died being extremely unhappy. She lived a horrible life!

Judy Garland had great respect for her role in Oz and it's fans even refusing to ever do a parody of it. Yes she had a rough life but you have no clue what you're talking about when it comes to her most iconic film.

I feel it should be mandatory that all peaceful Caucasian families be required to watch the Black Panther Wakanda movie. I did with my family over the weekend and we were so enthralled with the blakk culture that we made the 3.5 hour journey down to visit Saint Floyd Square, even though there were racist signs there stating that whites are not allowed, my family stayed and reveled at that black fist covered in bird doo doo rising up in the middle of the intersection. All in all it was a beautiful celebration of this culture for my family, and as a bonus we only heard 3 gunshots on Chicago Avenue the whole time ❤
