Judo's Most Overlooked Ashiwaza: Sasae

Ойын-сауық

When people think of ashiwaza, they tend to think of sweeps. But in judo there's a propping technique as well, called sasae-tsurkomi-ashi. Here are three ways you can do it.

I was on the receiving end of a quite perfect sasae outside of the grocery store. I misjudged the curb and it perfectly stopped my foot, sending me right over.

Always awesome, awesome work. One the best judo and grappling channels on youTube. I've been a martial artist for over 40 years and your tutorials are very clear and I learn a lot from them. I'm not a judo man and I learn a little bit each time. Keep up the good work.

I've never trained this technique properly. I have been watching some channels and this technique popped up. I was so amazed that I was practicing in the shadow for a couple of days. Today I was able to do that in the randori all of sudden. I am so so happy!

Someone told me once (over 20 years ago) Sasae isn't a foot technique, it's a hand technique. I never had good luck with it because at the time I was competing at 132lbs.

Beyond both being ashiwaza, what's the similarity between those?! But sasae (like hizaguruma) you block the leg into place, while barai you catch an unloaded leg and mow it out of the way.

sasae on me competition matches. it may be im low level, but it always intrigues me how people incorporate it on the setup for other things but rarely see it as a legit finisher throw. May be because its less satidfying than ashi barai
