The bramble vs. the olive, fig, and vine tree (Gideon, his brethren, Jotham (type of Christ)
Counterfeit vine vs. the true vine.
Luke 6:43-44 For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
44 For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes.
Failing to regard of those who have gone before us…

Defenders and Judge/Deliverers of Israel…in time of peace…but without rest.
Falling into deepening cycles of apostasy…The Cycle (6th)
v.6 And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD,
They backslid again
They served other gods (multiple…7 complete)…new low…deepening apostasy….Jud 2:19
They forsook the LORD
v.7-9 And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel,
What happens when you make Him hot?
You will be sold into the hands of the enemy…v.7
Sin leads to suffering and servitude
Coming from two different directions…God ups the ante… 18 years 6+6+6
You will be vexed and oppressed by the enemy…v.8
You will be sore distressed…v.9
Life of misery…He can make life miserable.
Faking repentance… Their Cry
v.10 And the children of Israel cried unto the LORD,
Confession without repentance… Sorry, I’ve been bad…. I got caught…No atheists in foxholes.
Supplication…for deliverance…get me out of this mess.
Deliver or save us from our circumstances…(regret) emotional
Not save us from our sin! (repentance) rational 2Cor 7:9-10
Forgetting and Forsaking
v.11-12 They forgot Him…what he had done for them
…no wisdom…they have learned nothing…no gratitude for past deliverance
v.13 The forsook Him…
The Consequence…wherefore I will deliver you no more.
What do you do when the LORD says no?
Ps 66:18 If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me.
v.14 Go and cry unto the gods which ye have chosen; let them deliver you in the time of your tribulation.
The LORD’s rebuttal…sarcasms … Chose other gods, well then live with your choice!
Your life going to hell in a hand basket? Your family, your marriage, your kids falling apart.
You lost your job? Lost your health? The Enemy attacking you?
Have you sown to wind, and are now reaping the whirlwind?
Go to your work or business….hobbists…bikers, bowling league, concert buddies
Go to the KC Chiefs, or KC Royals…to Mizzou Tigers, KU Jayhawks, K-State Wildcats
Go to the Lake of the Ozarks
Go to your bass boat…Go fishing, hunting, skiing…take a Cruise
Go to your next family reunion…see if they will bail you out.
Go to your portfolio manager, ETrade, Chas. Schwab
Such is the lot of man with no time for God, no time for church, no time for the ministry.
Ps 135:15-18 The idols of the heathen are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands.16 They have mouths, but they speak not; eyes have they, but they see not;17 They have ears, but they hear not; neither is there any breath in their mouths.18 They that make them are like unto them: so is every one that trusteth in them.
What Turns His Heart Again?
v.15-16 Genuine Repentance
Confession
v.15 No excuses…And the children of Israel said unto the LORD, We have sinned:…
v.15b No conditions…do thou unto us whatsoever seemeth good unto thee;
…Desperation
Repentance … put to action…turn from/turn to…rational
No delay…want deliverance, then get serious!
v.16a And they put away the strange gods from among them, and served the LORD:
v.16b and his soul was grieved for the misery of Israel.
His mercy endureth forever…
Why? On the verge of extinction…God promised to preserve a remnant.
