Southern- A line with a heavy tradition. An acquired taste. Usually people either love them or hate them. Usually their weaknesses are magnified and their strengths are ignored. But what they do well they do better than anyone else. Snares- 9.0. I wanted to give an 8.5 because of the material not being too difficult. However their attention to small things like every drum having the same tone is good. However, there was also dirt. I'll give a 9. Their execution of the melody will bring them over the hump. Tenors- 8.5 I've got to be honest. They're getting an 8.5 because they're southern. They were honestly underwhelming. Writing was minimal. It felt like the snares did most of the work and they spent more time standing than playing. I've followed Southern long enough to know that their parts are very purposeful in how they are written and every note is where it's supposed to be. I just want more. Plus there was some dirt. Basses- 9.0 Nothing flashy about them but they held down the pocket like they're supposed to. Cymbals- 8.5 The most surprising grade I've given to them. They're usually a 10 by default but tonight had to have been an off night. I heard dirt and saw mistakes. Very uncharacteristic. Balance- 9.0 Difficulty of material- 8.0 I'd normally give higher marks in this category because of how well they perform their material. However if we're going to be honest, their material's difficulty doesn't stack close to the competition's. I have to be unbiased. Jackson State Snares- 9.5 There was some dirt. On a given day they may get a 10 but today I definitely heard some spots that could stand to be cleaned up. However, great balance of chops and power. It seems as though they are playing heavier this year than previous years. I love it. Tenors-9.0 Basses- 9.5 Great power, great counterpoint, great Overall. Cymbals- 9.0 Some dirt, some points that didn't fit for a few seconds and I'd like to hear a "little" but more articulation with certain parts dealing with chick-crash splits. Quints-10 Maybe it's because I didn't see a lot of them but when I did it was great. Balanace- 9.0 I have to take off marks for some cleanliness issues and usually it would be 0.5 but since I'm grading tougher on one side I feel like it's only fair to be consistent. Difficulty of material- 9.5 Only not given a 10 because it was not perfectly played at all times. If there was no dirt then this would have been a 10. WT comes with difficult material every time.

Traditionally HBCU bands did not have quads. Most black college drumlines consisted of 2 Scottish bass drums, 2 leg tenor drums, 4 field snare and 2 cymbals and there purpose was to keep beat. Probably mid to late 80's when black bands started getting Corps style equipment and these huge drumlines and transitioning to more corp style cadences incorporating quads.

Unbiased opinion: (1)Southern's snares are waaay cleaner than JSU. (2) JSU's drum tuning is better than Southern's. (3) JSU technicality across the line was better than Southern's. (4) JSU's quints should have had a better showing than they did. Would like to have a really technical solo. (5) Both drumlines playing at the same time is stupid. (6) Overall, JSU had better material.
