It's great that you actually cut to example clips when you're talking about something instead of just staying on the stream/face cam footage. Most streamers don't and it really makes a difference in the quality of the video. Props to the editor.

I definitely think people will find stuff that pretty cleanly deals with counter. It'll just take a unique approach unlike DPs where the counterplay is pretty universal and has decades of history.

You can also jump or dash out of his level 2, this works both forward and back if you're not full screen and you have to do it before the first one hits. Characters with moves that move them in a direction I assume can also do the same such as Cammy,Blanka, Honda etc but that I haven't tested myself as I normally just jump out
I think it's gonna be exactly like Axl Low in Strive. People will struggle against the character at first, and then as time goes by, people will find this matchup more easier, and then Capcom will remove JP's Bomber loop.

What's really funny is watching LTG complain that JP is terrible and needs buffs and can't do anything in the corner 😂
I know I've seen some people talk about using EX fireballs as a meaty option since the EX Parry doesn't beat projectiles - as a Deejay main, it's something I've started utilizin' a bit.
@1000Tomatoes
Жыл бұрын
I've seen a chun player make non-ex work and get a pretty big counterhit combo off of it. I imagine the slower the projectile the better, but most with a fireball can probably get some kind of good meaty fireball in some way. Except Luke, his fireballs probably too fast. Surprisingly hashogeki isn't a projectile hitbox or else it would be perfect.
Something JP can do after making you block 5HP in neutral is throw out projectiles to check what you do. If you jump the mid version hits. If you respect it, then he just tries to mix you and see what happens. If you're really standing still, then you can get grabbed. The main thing about it is that you cannot DI him. He will recover in time if you try that. It's something I'm trying to do as JP as auto-piloting into 236P can get you killed by DI.
The problem with the counterplays is that they're risky and baitable and even if you get close to JP you get countered or knocked back full screen and you have to start from the beginning. If a character requires that much work and knowledge to beat he's simply overtuned, I didn't even mention his fireball damage combos do more damage than cammy's which is honestly ridiculous for a zoner.
Thanks for the content. I've been getting smoked by JPs online. I'm going to be using your advice in this video and I'll try to get better at playing against this character.
Yeah, I played Testament in Guilty Gear Strive and when I saw JP in SF6 I Figured it would be kind of the same situation. Both Characters like to set you up and play mind games. They Keep you guessing and are only as strong as they are creative or as punishing as you let them be. I Feel like once people adjust to the New-Fashioned playstyle JP brings to the street fighter world then he will fall mid for most tier lists, but still, that is just a guess. Personally, I am glad he is in the game because he gives the players like me a fresh zoning experience.
Great video. Pro advice against my main Gief's worst match-up is greatly appreciated.
loved the editing, great guide!
Great video going over JP pros and cons, but can't help but be amazed at the editing
Barring patch shakeups I'm pretty sure his ability to zone will get worse and setplay better as people learn the matchup. He honestly feels a lot like Zato in Strive where he has a bunch of small knowledge checks that all have really easy or low risk answers, but you have to actually take the time to lab them or you're guaranteed to get steamrolled, especially with his projectiles. But if you get knocked down into a setup in the corner you're getting schmixed for real.

does jp feint for sure not have a htibox? I've tried feinting when they are really close to me and they push a button and get hit. Am I just not feinting accidentally?
Something I'm surprised you didn't mention about the counter is that JP isn't guaranteed to be plus. I tested it with Cammy and if you meaty with 5LP you can be +8 meaning you can still enforce strike/throw afterwards and if you get the throw you don't get hit by the spike balls due to you being invincible during throws (at least Cammy doesn't get hit). You can't throw him until he is +0 as he is invincible until then but after you still have enough time to do a throw or a tick throw. Though the reward when hitting JP with a strike after activating the counter is pretty bad as the orbs take a long time to despawn meaning you can't really do a combo without getting hit unless you do a cinematic super. The formula for how plus JP is seems to be -17+remaning active frames+recovery frames. Cammy 5LP has 3 active frames and 7 recovery frames so -17+2+7=-8.
@1000Tomatoes

Active frame will change depending on how meaty the attack hits, but yeah the variable advantage based on the move countered definitely seems like an avenue that more advanced character specific counterplay will go down.

Luke is the new Ryu. Befitting the main character's archetype, he's designed to be balanced and easy to use against any match up. Although because of that, Luke doesn't have many unique traits. Players who want to play with specific fighter type usually end up choosing other characters.
Honestly, im a fan of the whole “JP is OP” mentality. It makes it so everyone joins together trying to figure out how to counter this one character. Plus JP is supposed to be the main bad guy here, he should feel like a boss. When I match up with JP online it is the most exciting and fun matches I have. On a tourney level, I don’t know what to think of him. I’m not good enough to be pro level so I can’t comment (I’m alright at the game, not bad but not great and trying to get better). I do feel like a lot of people are putting him on a higher tier than he actually is just because he’s so different for an SF character. He really encompasses what this SF is about, aggressive offense and really weird lateral thinking, miles different than SF5 (and a million times better and more fun that it).
Anyone got links for JP combos, everything I'm seeing is basic? Preferably corner setups.

I don't think the counter actually counters projectiles right? So maybe some characters can just meaty fireball into mixup?
How about when you block the spike, jump, then get anti aired by a second spike? I lost count of how many times this has happened to me.

Love your vids man. Tons of amazing information. I love JP so whether he winds up being super strong or super weak doesn't matter to me. I'll be playing him regardless. I'm also no where near a pro or even really a competitive player so I don't think what I do matters too much. Haha.
Why do you need to react to the low or the overhead if you can just parry ?
I've been really struggling against JPs as a Guile, because as you said they pretty much force me to change my gameplan and I haven't figured out a good strategy aside from trying to rush them down. Spike is fucking me up. Really awesome guide, thanks Diaphone!

Could you make a guide showing what moves you can safely punish with DI per character. I wanna know what moves I should watch my opponent for that aren't drive cancelable and are slow enough that they can't just block or quickly combo out of to get off 3 hits in time to break my DI. Like I main JP so in that case you'd want to DI against things like HP HK standing MP but not stand MK or crouch MP which he can cancel into his own DI to beat your DI for example.
Finally, fair critique of JP that isn't just "wahhh this character busted" or people downplaying him.
Hey guys, do you think that in the future of the game, matches will have more perfectly timed parries? Like, will some characters be useless because of that?
@jessierocket8227
Жыл бұрын
It seems that very fast charged attacks can be easily Perfect parried (I've seen a Zangief beating Honda at high level of play because Zangief was perfect parrying most of Honda's headbutt to command grab him. So if all "safe" and fast attacks are actually easy to parry with some training, it may hurt their place in the meta a lot).
How is perfect parrying the spike reliable counterplay? That doesn't seem at all consistent enough with how hard to react to it is, especially given all the other things you have to be ready to react to against this character.

The video editing is godlike
Why does nobody else use JP's combo from the Intermediate 10 combo trial? IMO its more optimal than half the stuff people try to do at the end of HK>HP, Level 2, HK>HP, QCB+HP. In the example Diaphone used at around 3:20 (and I've seen other players do it too) he ends that string with HK>HP, HP, which doesn't combo. If you end it with HK>HP, QCF+MP instead (if you're confused just look at JP's Intermediate 10 combo trial as thats the combo I'm referencing), then the crack you placed in the air will hit just as you finish the QCF+MP, and you can follow it up MP, light spike, which will end with the opponent the full stage length away from you and puts you in Oki, so you can follow the hard knockdown up with the command grab and 9/10 times it'll land, and if it doesn't that means they jumped so you can just keep the zoning pressure up at that point.
Great video. His Lvl 2 has immense potential
The editing in this video is top notch
I always wonder is there a single fighting game were there no zoner?
Greatly edited video
JP is both a newbie stomper and a very good character. It'll be up to what we see in tournaments whether or not he's as insane as he seems but right now statistically he seems like he is since you're around 2.5x more likely to be in Master rank if you're playing JP compared to the average of the other characters, you're 6x more likely to be in Masters than a Zangeif player. Either way he's in a place that makes him bad for the game as he creates a play pattern that's somehow more grueling to play against than Sim and unfun at low levels. Manon has a similar problem in that she just decimates people that don't know how to play around command grabs but it's not as big of an issue since it's really easy to play around command grabs.

You can only be so accessible when it comes to a game like this that's trying to be on both the old timers and new timers side. Eventually newbies are just gonna have to learn how to deal with him if they want to stick around, that's just the reality of fighting games. As for the rank difference, it's only a week in, a zoner like JP is always gonna be at the top a lot for the first few weeks
Funny thing, my opponents kept fucking missing their meaty throws when I started out so I thought the counter was throw invincible but didn't activate the counter
I just enjoy your content so heres a comment for the support
I did 30 matches with same JP, I learned a lot how to play against, but the grab projectile, except jump, nothing else we can do? And for the lvl 2, it's not easy to block all especially when he also rushes in
Absolutely amazing video, youre a life saver man.
for me the most "broken things from JP are: 1) that if you get caught trying to get in he can just push you to full range again by spending drive gauge, so characters that can´t get it so easily or so fast (like say, Ken, Cammy, Kimberly, Juri) are just going to have nightmare time. 2) The animation of his projectiles are almost the same, honestly for me it's impossible to tell which one is the projectile and which one is the command grab so I can't 99% react accordingly, and when I do it just feels like sheer luck... so unless this was part of his designed game plan (which I doubt it greatly) I wish Capcom tweak the projectiles animations so you can tell clearly when your opponents JP is going for the CG and when they are going to the projectile, the other things are a nuisance but isn't like there hasn't been zoners in SF games before.

Can JP make Unblockables from his Level 2?
Great video! I think JP can and should take a nerf to OD Amnesia. The rest of his tools are strong enough to merit it - imo he will still very much be a good character without the high damage reward on blowing up throws/command grabs.
i think he’s gonna be relegated to mid tier in like 6 months once people actually implement counterplay. i have a bit of my own tech i want to drop but i need to record it still

As a Jamie main, I am having SO MUCH EMOTIONAL DAMAGE watching other characters climb the ranks. Playing Jamie is an absolute HELL ON EARTH. It’s insane. All characters have their kits readily available to them. Jamie, if you ain’t taking a swig, you’re screwed. Can you imagine the nightmare of fighting Kimberly on pressure? Or Ken? It’s a NIGHTMARE AMONG NIGHTMARES. Then even more so when the next round comes and you have to REDRINK 💀. Jamie isn’t “unplayable”. I wouldn’t go that far, but he’s definitely a struggle to play, especially since even execution wise he’s really hard to nail so a slip up could really screw you an entire round or game. JP feels like one of those charatcers that people complain about so much that he gets nerfed to the point where he's just unplayable anymore. The FGC always likes to cry wolf in these situations. And on the change where he does actually get nerfed, I hope they do it in a way where they can retain the charatcer. He's a genuinely cool charatcer, and it would be a shame to lose him so early.

Hell yeah i love Joaquin Phoenix
I love when pro players are like "easily reactable" and I'm like "bro I need about another 30 frames. You clearly do not understand how bad my reaction times are, here."
I personnally think JP IS super good but only in a skilled persons hands (i.e sonicfox) ive fought a few JP's in my ranked journey im only at silver right now and i do get matched with a few gold people obviously thats not super high rank but even at these ranked matches i find people that play JP are not the greatest at using what he has, so most of the time i can just jump the fireballs and get a full punish, i very rarely get hit with his command grab because it is honestly quite slow and it glows differently compared to his other ghosts and i think its a little slower just from eyeballing it, dont quote me on that though i dont lab frames very much 😅 And overall he does seem very good and even broken in SOME cases but for the majority of players hes just annoying more than a full blown top tier, i do however think the full screen SA 3 is definitly going to be very good when it comes to closing out matches when it matters most. So time will tell mabye he will be a tournament monster and a ranked clown who knows 😂
After dealing with Happy Chaos for so long, JP really doesn’t feel like much of a problem. He’s good, sure, but he has obvious counterplay and can’t shut you down for an entire match. I think he’s in a good spot balancewise for his character archetype.

I believe zoning to be the absolute best overall fighting game archetype/player strategy. As an Unga Bunga Rush-em-Down all night type player myself, i admit my bias. But I see the classic fighting game triangle 🔺️ as more of a lopsided sea saw. Zoning beats Grappling AND Rushdown, both of which are styles you need to get in close. A good zoner will keep you at bay, at full screen most of the match, with you only getting 1 or 2 opportunities to blow him up. Nothing is a frustrating as a competent zoner who knows their gameplan and doesn't care about looking cool. They'll be just as content to sit at full screen and hit you with special after special. Anyway, back to JP. He is the WORST flavor of zoner. Strong normals, full screen combos, full screen command grab, cancelable teleports, and an absolute FYRE reversal that beats just about everything including grabs, command or otherwise. Talk about having ALL the gifts. Counterplay??! If your down on the lower ranks, what is that?! He has some options for folks to beat his zoning, but allot of em are frame perfect parries and such. Noobs can't do that shizz!! I can BARELY do that shizz, and I've been playing since the arcade days! 😂But I swear I don't wanna have another Happy Chaos situation. All the top players making videos about how "JP breaks the game!!" And, "This character is sooooo carried!!!" or, "SF6 is the most unbalanced game ever!" No more of that, please! Already my top watched boys have made videos complaining about him. I REALLY don't want it to turn into a whole thing.

It's because they're all in Diamond+. He's not a popular character to play there's just more of them in the higher ranks than any other character despite that. If you're playing JP you're near 3x more likely to be in the top 1000 compared to the average. You're 6x more likely to be in the top 1000 than a player on Zangief.
After watching this video, I'm beginning to think that the main reason players complain about JP is the fact that his weaknesses require a considerably skillful and experienced player to properly punish. And before one becomes that, JP will be regularly destroying them, unlike some other character, which makes him *FEEL* OP in their eyes. Doesn't really mean that he is.
Also if you EX lilys forward special you can go through projectiles but hey, who plays Lily *starts crying*
Long ranged throw is the craziest move he has imo
As a baby gief just trying to find my way I couldn't solve the two JPs I ran into tonight in my low rank of iron. I'd miss time jumping. over that ranged command grab
I'll wait for now. But if he ends up being the best character in the game, I want him nerfed asap. If it was any other character I'd be less upfront about nerfing them. But he is a dedicated zoner, which imo should never be top 1 as they are abysmal to fight against with low mobility characters.
Visibility on his abilities is pretty crap. Like differntiate his moves by how slightly more purple they are 🤦♂️
