Joyce DiDonato is just great! She is a model to young singers, for the effort and the passion she puts into her work, but also for her behaviour and attitude towards others. She is a wonderful singer, actor and teacher and just a beautiful soul. I appreciate her so much!

Joyce DiDonato is one of the nicest, most intelligent master class teachers I've ever experienced. So on point, intuitive, knowledgeable, and still kind.... Frederica von Stade is another one I love.

I admire the diplomacy with which DiDonato expresses herself. I would have broken some hearts here unfortunately 😢

Yeah, there're some things that she says that mean pretty much what they mean, but basically it's "oh boy, that's the basics, can't believe we are working on this at this level".

Perhaps we all need a little more diplomacy? Especially in a masterclass setting, as she said in the beginning. This is supposed to be a safe space, a learning space. These are students. Perhaps take your “heartbreaking” to some other platform.

Interesting opinion. I believe she is the one who selects these singers from many who applied. She is probably well aware of their level and capabilities as well as of what she is able to teach them. To be honest here not technically but stylistically.

Except for the tenor and the last soprano, these singers have serious technical problems. I'm surprised that Joyce--who I love--doesn't zero in on these, as I've seen her do in other masterclasses.

I suspect that the first singer is a soprano--perhaps a dramatic soprano. Her low notes are weak, and most of her high notes are great. Her height is a clue for me.

So dramatic sopranos start as mezzos until they mature and come into their own. Or they start to lyric repertoire like Flagstad did, and then at 35, she emerged as a full-fledged Wagnerian Soprano. The first singer seems a little with her top, so that will take time to work through

She could also develop into a dramatic mezzo. The top and bottom just need to fully line up. Dramatic voices generally take time

Her position of the voice is nit yet there, nor her breath actually. Only that she will be able to open better the spaces and only then the round dark colour will truely shine!
