Ian was literally discharged from the hospital after an overdose just before this show, the poor guy was in no fit state to perform yet he always concealed his pain from his peers. rip ian, a true legend.

Love tore us apart. In certain parts of Old Trafford you'll still see tributes to Ian Curtis....and he was a City fan!
I recall reading an interview where the actor who played Ian described how difficult it was because they had Curtis' widow onstage to help them with the character. He said that more than once she addressed him as Ian without realizing it.
@WobblesandBean
2 жыл бұрын
Oh god, I would feel so awful if I were Sam when that happened. Ian caused so much pain to Deborah, not to mention the trauma she carried from being the one to discover his body. Having to see the ghost of him in the form of Sam's performance must have been difficult for her.

@@WobblesandBean I personally think that despite how much her relationship with Ian was, she still probably loved him and I can't imagine the struggle she went through with finding his body and having to raise their child without him (Granted Ian was already distant after Natalie was born, but still).

I was at that gig. Mental. Me and Reg got on the guest list. A guy threw a bottle and it hit a chandalier above the stage and the whole place erupted into violence... Hooky and some of the road crew kicked off and I don't blame them. The guy who kept coming on and off was from Crispy Ambulance... We had no idea Ian was epileptic. I have seizures and can't imagine the trauma he was going through. We did a photo session with Anton Corbin who did this film I think? Me and Reg were sweeping up blood and glass after the shortened show. Derby Hall Bury. I think it is now called the Met... We also went to the first New Order Gig. Dave Fielding and Ooshka.xx

Yes. The gig was sold out. It's an arts centre,/ venue and we knew the guy who ran it. Adrian Mealing. We asked him to put us on the guest list and that's how we got on. We also saw joy Division at the Factory/ Russell club prior to that. One of the most origional and exciting bands I've ever witnessed We only hung but used to go there regularly. I think John Peel was there too. Ian Curtis was amazing as a singer and frontman. You know when your watching something so origional and awesome. His stage presence was magnetic. We saw The Fall a lot round about the same time. ,"live at the witch trials " being one of my favourite albums. Deeply Vale free festival, the Factory,Manchester poly etc. Again Mark E Smith was a very charismatic origional frontman with a great band. Karl Burns is one of my favourite all time favourite drummers. We both ended up going to Rochdale art college and I worked in advertising after that and then went professional with The Chameleons. Dave Fielding and Ooshka.xx

We also saw early New Order gigs and again after Ian tragically passed away I was amazing at the strength of the remaining members not just to carry on but completely change their style to again a Fresh, origional style. Electronic/ Rock originality. Two of my all time favourite bands. We were lucky enough ( me and Reg) to see them at the iconic Factory club when New Monday was released. I think my last gig was The Mondays about two years ago at The engine shed in Lincoln where I have lived for past 16 years. Again another of my favourite bands. Just when you think youv'e seen it all along comes another origional off the wall band. Shaun and Bez are legends. I got on stage with The Inspiral Carpets there too. I produced their first ever ep. The Train Crash ep. I did 4 out of the 5 tracks. That was an experience I'll never forget. It's the main venue in Lincoln. I have seen the Mondays there a few times, inspiral Carpets, James, The Charlatans and too many others to remember. My favourite band at the moment for again the Charisma and Originality are The Sleaford Mods. Very on the ball bloke...

I like how they've used the discography of the tracks to underline important aspects or events in Ian's life. During "Disorder" his own inability to perform was portrayed, for example, and during "Isolation" he was shown alone in the recording booth looking in from the outside at Annik and the others. "Atmosphere" ("Don't walk away insilence...") was played in the suicide scene. You can tell the cinematographers of "Control" really thought about what they were doing.
@Sabbathfaax
Жыл бұрын
Atmosphere also chronologically functions as one of the last songs written by Ian and the song that the director filmed a music video for. Couldn't end the movie on a better note
@AtrocityEquine01
8 ай бұрын
It fits because the director _was_ someone who did do some work with JD. Anton Corbjin did some photos for the group and, as @Sabbathfaxx pointed out, he directed the music video of "Atmosphere".
I'm a huge JD fan and after watching "Control", I sometimes felt like I was watching a documentary because the acting was so good. And I agree 100% with what everyone's saying about Sam Riley's performance as Ian. It's very believeable and the acting in this film is amazing. They aren't lip synching, they're actually performing this and if you think the resemblance is eerie, Sam's acting of Ian's dancing is almost exactly the same. Anton did a great job on the film. Ian, may you rest in peace.

“Take as long as you need… how long do you need?” It initially comes off as comical but this line really does sum up the disconnect that the people around Curtis had when it came to understanding his illness. It’s commendable that the film chose to be so stark in its depictions of his story.

Disorder is one of my favorite songs ever... It's so accurate and intense. May you rest in peace, Ian...
Ian’s daughter Natalie is in this scene. Heavy make up and hair slightly up to the lower right of the screen. She would have been 27/28 when they filmed this in 2006. Older than her dad ever got. Must have been surreal for her. Sam was only 26 at the time. Mesmerising performance. Should have won more awards for it really
No, the real story behind this performance was when Hempsall came on, the audience were very angry and some person threw a bottle up to the floor which hit the loose lighting above and caused it to come down and smash onto the audience. The last ever Joy Division performance ended as badly as it had started it seems. :P
This film has to be one of the best music-based biographical films I have ever seen. Sam Riley nailed the role of Ian and managed to perfectly capture his movements and expressions on stage. It was also very well shot and the absence of color really fit what the movie was going for. The film was a very emotional ride into Ian Curtis' life and did an amazing job conveying the band's story.

There’s a scene at the very beginning where the bassist threatens to beat someone’s head in at a bar and then the guitarist says “I’ve seen him do it before” It’s cool they paid it off by making him excessively beat this shit out of that guy
Sam Riley should've won an Oscar for this. This movie is incredibly well-done, Corbijn really nailed it
"Where's me 20 quid?" "In my _fuck off_ pocket."
This scene was the hardest scene to watch. something was tearing him up inside, and even his best mates wouldn't help him sort it out. Possibly the most under appreciated bands of manchester music scene era. Even Tony of Granada t.v. took a while to really acknowledge them as well as the stoned roses.

I think it also didn't help that since it _was_ the 80s, I don't think there was any way to help Ian out. Epilepsy was still something not really understood, let alone depression. I still can't imagine what his band mates felt with Ian's death.

The film was well made and most of the timeline and events I heard about were included. I liked after they were in the club seeing the Sex Pistols gig Ian was in the street saying,' I hear you need a singer." I knew he was a smoker but wondered if his portrayal was accurate cause he always was smoking a cig. Really sad about Ian. I knew early in the film before Warsaw had made it he had made a mistake when he told his wife they should have a baby. Its like right you hardly have any money plus you're always on the road. You had to feel very bad for everyone like his wife and kid, band and manager, Tony Wilson when he checked out. Glad those guys went on to some success with New Order cause it just wasn't fair what happened on the eve of their U.S. Tour and things were looking up aside from Ian's serious epileptic fits and disillusion about performing and others expectations of him. Its just very sad to this day a young 23 yr old man taking his life and especially leaving his young child fatherless.

It staggers me that the rest of the band never really twigged to how deeply Ian's torment ran.
