She was blinded by the fact that happiness is what keeps you occupied from the bad things happening, and she thought that being sad was what caused Riley's depression. I love all the characters and the fact that they actually learn more about each other as the movie progresses, and they realize how important they others can be rather then just themselves

Joy was constantly refusing to let Sadness do her job (like "negative emotions are also a part of life & it wouldn't kill Riley to not be happy for 5 seconds). . Because, despite Joy pretending otherwise, I think Riley was sad about having to move house/change schools/leave her friends. So, to me, it's less Sadness just suddenly deciding to mess everything up because she's stupid/a jerk & more Joy accidentally messing everything up because she was a control freak, who couldn't handle Riley not being her "perfect, happy" girl anymore.

Joy is a perfectly portrayed emotion. The concept of happiness is so complex in itself. The fact that Joy was so desperately trying to see the good though she was struggling the most shows that happiness takes effort. Her hair being blue is also a clear giveaway that happiness is rooted in sadness. Being happy is an indulgence that is effected and transformed by other toxic surroundings, and to be happy, even if others get hurt or affected, is irrelevant if you can feel joy.

Joy is the antagonist of Inside Out, like Alma was the antagonist for Encanto. They both had good intentions but treated their comrades/family members poorly, especially the "unspecial" ones (i.e. Sadness - Mirabel). It wasn't until the end that they finally understood what they were doing wrong, be it through literal destruction, and resolved to make things better from then on. 💙💛

In her defense regarding her positivity. It's kind of her job.. and considering that Riley's mum called her "Our happy girl", Riley being a very happy person is part of her personality, and Joy's job is to keep that part of her continuing. I can't defend her treatment of saddness though. I understand that since she is the joyful emotion, she doesn't always understand the importance of the other emotions, but the way she treated Sadness is unacceptable. I'm glad she's no longer doing that though!

I just noticed how anger likes that there's a friendly argument section at the end. Even though his name is "anger," conflict that is not violent or with malice, but which helps both people involved grow is also his deal. I like the little touches they added to show that the "bad" emotions aren't terrible and can help in ways that dont require catastrophe or danger.

Omg when I first watched this movie with my family my mom said I was both anger and sadness, and she said the part of the movie where everything crumbles and Riley just feels nothing reminded her of me. Turns out a couple years later I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and I was just disassociating a lot.

Fun fact: Joy’s hair and eyes are blue, yet her body is yellow, but we’ve seen with every other emotion that their color palette stays the same with just different shades, showing on how happiness does often need sadness, because if some things aren’t sad, then what’s the point of being happy if nothing matters? Also is it weird that I’m sad that Sadness never got her blue core memory? Like- GIVE IT TO HER- SHE DESERVES IT SHE IS TOO PURE!

A villain is different from an antagonist. Joy was causing problems, but she wasn’t violent or manipulative or anything that really makes a Disney villain. But she was antagonistic in a sense that she prevented the other emotions from doing what they need to do.

It has been agreed by a lot of psychologists that this movie really does explain the mind and how our emotions work. i love that aspect to help me explain and even regulate some of my emotions. But overall I just love the story and I also just love to recognise that we can't be happy all the time (sorry Joy). Because without sadness we can't have empathy, without fear we can't be safe, without anger we can't fight for ourselves, and without disgust we can't be sassy 💁‍♀
