Journey to the Glacier | Colombia Off-Road Adventure

El Cocuy National Park.
I’ve always wanted to visit a Glacier. Since the dream of this trip arose. I thought it would be in Patagonia, not right here, near the equator in Colombia.
A cowboy once told us that ice is the most powerful force on earth. Seeing how millions of years of frozen water has moved and shaped this landscape, I think he was right.
Getting to the Northern tip of the Andes to see Colombia’s last and only Glacier would be a test and challenge of its own.
From our location we’re about 225 kms away, and the road looks insane.
We know it’s going to be an adventure just to get to the National park.
Colombia is working hard to increase its tourism industry. There used to be a 6 day trek through the East side of the park, but due to complications we learned about between the indigenous, and the government wanting to restore the land it’s no longer open. Additionally, these are the fastest melting glaciers on Earth. So if you want to see them, now is the time.
El Cocuy feels like a hidden gem of Colombia. The route to get here from the West is worth the time alone. It’s the first glacier we’ve been to, and it exceeded our expectations, especially the difficulty of the trek in the altitude. This country is full of surprises and amazing things to discover, and that’s exactly what we’re here to experience. I hope by now we’ve earned your subscription. For behind the scenes content and real time updates, join us on Patreon. Thank you for being here, we’ll see you next time.
These are the fastest melting glaciers on earth, so if you want to see them, now is the time.

Wow! Totally stunning. I've said it before, but I'll say it again. This series is easily my favorite content on KZread right now. As your channel grows, and the sponsors come knocking on your door, I hope you won't resort to ill disguised segments of "oh, by the way, I couldn't live without ..." for half the episodes, as is so common these days. I've quit watching some other former favorite channels because they resorted to wasting half the time of each episode to "hidden" sponsorship BS. The genuine experiences and your honest storytelling is what makes this channel so cool.

  • @steveneate

I understand where you're coming from as it gets tiresome to watch wholly uninspired sponsorship content. However, many creators on KZread work extremely hard to provide high quality content on a consistent schedule that requires a full time effort. If you enjoy the content, you should understand that they deserve to be able to live comfortably and grow their career at the same time that they're saving for retirement. I think it's a fine line to balance a channel's quality with ambition and greed. In many cases, I think a sponsorship from a useful product or service is a good demonstration of success. We should support Matt and Stacey getting more sponsors on board with their mission if that's one of their goals.

  • @henrikm4657

    @henrikm4657

@@steveneate for sure, these guys (and many others) work really hard to produce the amazing content that we enjoy. I'm just worried that when the sponsors start financing their content, the freedom to create what they are passionate about may decrease due to contractual obligations. Last time I watched a The Story Till Now episode, I almost threw up in my mouth, and I couldn't even watch 5 minutes of it. It's sad, because it used to be a great channel. I really hope that doesn't happen to these guys, that's all. I guess becoming a Patreon supporter is one way of decreasing that risk.

@@henrikm4657 TSTN is exactly what I had in mind when I mentioned uninspired content. It's pretty bad in some episodes. He does film some incredible and inspired content in original settings as well though, and it's impressive to see his success and channel growth. When an episode feels like more of a sales pitch than a story or experience, that's when I stop watching. There have been episodes I shut off and didn't come back to.

My wife and I hiked from 12,400 up to 15,300 on Santa Isabel. Nevada del Ruiz. It was awesome. I almost didn’t make it but a group of 20 something hikers walk past saying you will regret it…. So we tracked on up the remaining 700 ft to the glacier. I was almost 50 at the time and my wife 41 ish and she did better then me. My wife is Colombian and walked a lot more then me at the time so she was a trooper. A great experience for sure. And i would have regretted it as was told to me but a group of young girls. Thanks girls…lol

Hello again from the south Okanagan. My goodness it's impressive and so very different how folks live up in such high elevations. We were up cutting firewood - next year's or the next after - and looking to bring home something for supper as it's that time of year here. We were at 1541 meters and it felt high enough, so I can't imagine 5000 meters truly. Your drone footage just gets better and better, kudos. Safe travels once more you two.

He said if I wanted to see a waterfall he'd put a rock in the sink and turn the faucet on. Instant waterfall lol in that same vein, if you want to see a glacier and avoid a long, arduous hike, I'll pile up some rocks and put an ice cube on top! I'm really enjoying this series. My 1st time subscribing to any channel. It's a nice balance of scenery, adventure, music, and story telling. I know how you feel about hiking high with the lack of oxygen. I was hiking in Slow Mo above Everest Base camp. Toyota Trucks are great, I have owned 6. Keep up with the sense of adventure and take care both of you. Maybe see you back on the Island one day. I could show my Tree Walk in Parksville.

Absolutely loving this series! I binged the first few months and now have to wait a week between episodes. But it's worth it. As a fellow Canadian, I have to wonder about your pronunciation of " Glacier". I've never heard it said the way Matthew says it! I've always heard it as " Glay sure" Not " Glay si er". Love the channel guys!

Not a lot of snorkels made for '76 2wd hill cabs! None exactly lol. We definitely would love to have a custom stainless one in the future. Didn't have the time during the 100 day build, we did manage to get our intake into a good spot to get cold air and avoid water and a lot of dust.

always take a guides time of hiking or length with a grain of salt, I've done holes all over the world with local guides and they are terrible at estimating time( I think they underestimate on purpose to get you to do the hike in the first place!)

Grasias . Saludos desde California. I really enjoy watching your videos with my family. Thanks

We were rolling very slow.. this happens on most roads in Latin America, the farmers always encourage us to keep moving. We would never intentionally spook it.

Another incredible journey and another icredible video. I so enjoyed that you took days to reach the glacier when it was supposed to be measured in hours. That's my kind of travel there. I thought that one Tom Turkey was about to attack the truck. He obviously did not like you coming through his territory. I was very impressed by your guide. Not only did he speak English, he seemed to have a great understanding of the ecosystems in the area. I think you guys need a couple of easy days to catch up from that hike.

Thank you Phil! We are so grateful for our chosen speed: slow. Ha! It has changed our travel journey from the destinations to everything in between. I’m sure we will remember getting to the top of the glacier for years to come, but I’m positive that the memory right beside it will be of the smiling families encouraging us to camp on their property and the vocal turkeys.

Excellent videos, photography beautifully done, unique, great adventures, but the music in the videos, especially the rock music that sounds like a Yukon gold-search TV special, is intrusive and ruins the experience. Sometimes the music is too loud. Sometimes it doesn't match the mood of the situation. Almost always it is too prevalent. The taste in music is poor. In most cases silence, just the sound of the truck and surroundings, would be superior.
