The concept of Life Dedication Mijalis in the Ismaili tradition holds deep significance, intertwining historical precedence with spiritual devotion. Let's delve into its importance and origins with references from Ismaili history, Ginans, and Imams' Farmaans.
The term "majlis" in the Ismaili context denotes a gathering or session, serving various purposes throughout history. In the pre-Fatimid and Fatimid eras, Majlis al-Hikma, or sessions of wisdom, were conduits for imparting esoteric interpretations of the Qur'an and ritual practices to the murids by the Imam's da'is. These sessions played a crucial role in nurturing spiritual understanding among the followers.
Post-Imam Hasan ‘Ali Shah's migration to India, a new form of majlis emerged among Khoja Ismailis. Murids sought to offer services akin to those rendered during earlier periods, despite the changed circumstances where the Imam had a retinue of servants. Although physical service was no longer necessary, the murids persisted, offering the equivalent of a servant's salary as a token of their devotion. Imam Hasan ‘Ali Shah graciously accepted this gesture, understanding its underlying sentiment.
Over time, Khoja murids symbolically offered periods of service equivalent to 5, 12, and 50 years, representing significant milestones in a devotee's life. These offerings, reflecting 10%, 25%, and 100% of a servant's lifetime earnings, were accepted by the Imam as expressions of commitment. During Mawlna Sultan Muhammad Shah's era, murids who made these symbolic offerings were organized into formal majlis groups such as Panch Bar Saal and Life Dedication, with specific farmans issued to each group.
The Qur'an lauds believers who offer their wealth and lives in service to the Prophet and the Imam, underlining the spiritual significance of such devotion.
The tradition of Life Dedication Mijalis thus embodies a synthesis of historical tradition, spiritual commitment, and communal organization within the Ismaili community, fostering a sense of unity and devotion among its members across generations.
