Journey Into Camera Trapping - Part Two

It's time for Part 2 of my introduction into the world of camera trapping! In this video I'll be working with a simple two flash setup, focusing my attention on some rodents. I'll be finding a spot which looks ideal for camera trapping based on activity in the area, and setting up my gear.
It took a couple of attempts to get the setup working right and I was pleasantly surprised by the results although the subjects that turned up were somewhat something of a surprise!!

    Hey Simon, I too started camera trapping about a year ago. It truly is a rather large learning curve. We all can surely learn from each other. I learned from a guy by the name of Randy Robbin’s from CA on our west coast in the US how to make a water prof tube out of PVC tubing for my flashes. I expanded on his idea and attached Ram Mounts to mine so that I could mount them on a tree and 90 degrees from that mount I attached a quick mount to them so I could also if needed mount them on a tripod. I live in North Carolina in the US. I’ve watched all of your videos and enjoy your work and have learned a lot from you. Thank you!

    Got to say Simon you are reeling me in mate I may take a crack at this myself,it's great getting out in the field and waiting but so much is missed at night my CCTV at home picks things up but even with the night light the pictures are not the greatest (unless you are a burglar at the back of the house) another great video mate I'm looking forward to the next one all the best

    Simon, use the flash metre, it’s invaluable for setting up, also try to move the flashes to 45 degrees each side of the camera and use 1 as the main light and 1 as a fill set to slightly less power, then play with it from there, good luck, it gets addictive !

    Enjoying this little series Simon and looking forward to seeing where you go with it! It's inspiring me to have a play with that kind of thing - I've actually got some Camtraptions gear that I got during the pandemic with the idea of setting something up in the garden, but then somewhere in between the weirdness of lockdown and the arrival of my daughter, it never made it out beyond a couple of quick tests... 14:26 Interetsing that the Osmo Pocket 3 didn't still manage to face track with the foreground objects - must have been the camo ;)

  • @simoneardley

    @simoneardley

    Thanks Geoff, aye get the gear out and give it a dust off. It was the onset of Winter and the short days that kind of spurred me to have a go at it. No reason why it cant be used all year round though. Still playing round with the Osmo settings, I suspect I had it in product mode where it switches focus the the nearest object in the frame!! All the best, Si 👊

    @@simoneardley yeah, that might have been it with the OP3, but it was moving about which makes me think it was trying to track something... Clever wee bit of kit either way - I had the original one for years and just upgraded to the new one!
