maartenvt -- I think you're being a little demanding when you ask Josh, to empathize as much as you do with Paul SImon's growing 1960s disenchantment with classical poetry, Western civilization, religion, and the Vietnam War. Later on Paul "dumbed it down," stopped worrying about existentialism, nuclear war, and nihilism, and wrote fun songs like "Cecilia", which Josh has also done a good job on.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Josh grew up in a very different time and place, and almost all of those 60s worries were dead and gone. He does a fine job portraying the anxiety, rootlessness, and uncertainty many people of his generation are feeling, as well as the distrust of "received wisdom" that both eras have in common.

A deceptively simple and gorgeous rendition, but what is priceless is the momentary childlike smile at the beginning. A lot of us never get to see you live, shut in as I am, so it’s nice to hear your voice or see an outtake or two. As an old music veteran I just have to say don’t let the road eat you up, stay young as long as you can, love somebody, lover, sibling, friend, or old dog, somebody to laugh with. Merle Haggard always slept on his tour bus with his two chihuahuas inside his jacket, Willie Nelson talks to his guitar, Ethel Merman talked to her furs but I would advise against that, a real life is what I wish for you hon.
