✅ About AEA Ribbon Mics & Preamps:
AEA Ribbon Mics and Preamps is family owned and operated in beautiful Pasadena, California. Proudly independent, we still manufacture all our microphones by hand right here in the United States.
Since the creation of the R44C in 1998, AEA has expanded into designing and building new ribbon microphones, each with a unique application and function, using the same RCA traditions. Over the years, AEA has advanced ribbon technology, using new materials, updated manufacturing techniques. The company now makes a whole line of ribbon mics that can be configured to give a group of musicians a unique sonic signature.

The depth and beauty from both the mic and Josh's playing absolutely blew me away... I could not believe my ears at the stereo image, warmth, detail, and nuance of this mic, I kept looking for some more mics over the hammers or something!! 🤯

In the latest installment of the AEA Sessions video series, musician and composer, Josh Nelson, plays his original piece, “The Architect.” The R88 stereo ribbon mic was used exclusively to capture the solo grand piano, without any effects, compression or EQ.

This video just sold me an AEA R88, especially knowing no effects, compression or eq were used! Unbelievably good mic. I’m going to use it on my double bass, and I know I’ll be happy with the sound I get for the rest of my days. Life is too short to scrimp on the important things. Thank you AEA. Love your work. 🙏🏻

Fantastic piece and great playing. Yamaha pianos often sound sterile and lifeless to me, but I got admit, Josh, his piano tech, that room, and the R88 made it sound great!

As always a good ribbon mic recording (recorded well and without competition from over bright condensers and such) is a "tactile" experience...feels like you can reach out and grab the instrument. The notes have shape that somehow gets lost in so many recordings. (one small note: sounds like proximity effect might have gotten a bit over balanced so distance or a high-pass filter could open up the sound a good bit.)

@@Ribbonmics It is an Yamaha C7 or a S6? Thank you. I've never witnessed a mic to enrich the sound and the TONE of a piano like this before. I NEED a R88.

The tone is absolutely BUTTER, to me there's no piano recording without a R88 anymore! Just one point about panning: the lows in the right/highs in the left, just sound weird and unnatural. You'll never see a pianist playing from his front. You'll always have the keys view, so, please, lows in the left, treble in the right! Thanks a lot for the video.

Why didn't it work for me?? The sound of the Piano in this video is so warm and inspiring that I actually saved up and went out to buy the AEA R88 and the RPQ2 preamp to record my piano but... sigh...unfortunately it didn't turn out too well for me. All my attempts were futile as each recording I did was so noisy that all my tracks were unusable. I hopped on some of the forums online and lot's of people complained about noise being a problem in untreated rooms and apparently you can only use the mic in a Pro Studio. So my question to @AEA Ribbon Mics is...how did you manage to make such a flawless sounding recording like this in a non professional environment without the noise? This video plus all the other amazingly sounding videos on your channel promoting the R88 has been misleading for me as I actually went out to buy your mic plus the preamp with high hopes of recording my piano and now it's just sitting in the corner collecting dust...Sigh....I would really love to be able to still use my R88 so please if anyone knows how I can get around the crazy noise problem, please chime in.

Hi, I know this is a very old video, but was just wondering if any mic activator was used between the R88 and the DAV BG1 preamp? as the BG1 only has 59db of gain (66db on theBG1u) I really really love this piano sound and Already owning a DAV BG1u and a modern RME interface, this video is seriously making me consider purchasing an R88 microphone 😅 Any insight would be greatly appreciated 🙏

+minimusic Hi Minimusic, no effects, compression or EQ were used. All of our AEA Sessions videos (with the exception of "If You Could See Me Now" and "The Lemon Trees" which feature reverb) are not compressed or EQed in any way. Thank you for watching!

+AEA Ribbon Mics & Preamps Impressive! That is an amazingly 'finished' sound. I'm thinking that the slope of the response curve mimics air absorption with distance, giving the effect of more distant micing than it really is. This is one of the most beautiful piano sounds I've heard, and I have heard a lot. As a recordist, piano is one of my favorite challenges and I much prefer mine to most recordings but this, with the exception of imaging specificity (due to the close positioning, I guess) has a nicer bottom than mine, which are a little thin in that area. It is more listenable. Is this Wes answering? I wish I had connected with you before I went to Armenia that time to try your R88 on the orchestra!
