Jose's "Last One."

Спорт

It was the one species of fish Jose pursued more than any other. In over 16 years of Spanish Fly he did over 30 shows fishing for them. It never mattered about the size, it was about the hunt. From a young age the tarpon fascinated him. So it was fitting that in April of 2012 Jose would shoot the last show of his life stalking one final Tarpon. This is that show.

The only fishing show where the host doesn't come off over the top. Just a nice calm fishing show where the host is so passionate about fishing. Hate that we lose people like this

As a young angler living in Kentucky very far away from saltwater I gobbled up everything I could about a style of fishing that was as foreign to me as China or France. My window into that amazing world was the TV program Spanish Fly. I hung on every word that Jose said, every fish he missed and of course every fish he landed. Now I'm an adult and fortunate enough to have fished from the Gulf of Alaska to the Gulf of Mexico and many, many places in between....I really believe that part of that is because of Jose. His show and mostly his enthusiasm allowed me to think about things bigger than myself and my small world and dream big dreams .... Thanks Jose. You're still missed.

For years I watched Jose fishing the keys and always told myself I would one day be down there to feel what he felt. My first trip was on my honeymoon and went flats fishing out of Key West and the hook was set. I have fished out of Islamorada for the past 6 years with my son and I understand his passion. I saw this episode before with a friend of mine and when Jose ended his narrative and the words "three hours later......" appeared on the screen my friend and I were both in tears. I fish from Cheeca Lodge every year and paddle around thinking what would Jose do, what would he be using? I miss his shows during the cold Connecticut winters. I sit on the Cheeca dock at night fishing now understanding why he felt so strong about the Keys and fishing. It is a connection only few can make. Fair winds and following tides Jose; thank you for making me make he journey to the Keys and experience it with my son.

I have never been one of those people that get attached to a celebrity. I still often wonder how people get so emotional over people that they have never met. This was my one exception. Jose was a brilliant angler, guide and story teller. He connected with us in the fishing community to the point that we all felt like we did know him. And from what I have read of him, he would have cared for each of us had we ever met. Still a hard loss to take.

Just having the coffee, the tv to myself at 730am seemed like I was fishing with him. Now, I get the same excitement fishing with my daughter and seeing her passion for it reminds me of Jose and watching his show. I miss this very pleasant man; just watched one of the new shows--I won't say which one, but they were acting like jack-asses, no reverence for nature, or the fish, absolutely no humbleness. No awe in the presence of nature, the great outdoors, and it made me instantly think of the polar opposite, Jose who always took the time to appreciate, to share, to educate. From big things to little things. I recall--just one anecdote, showing how to take a mono leader that was kinked, tie the hook to a post, and pull out the kinks which is easy--but I had never thought of that, after years of fishing, rig tying and so forth. He was gentle, and good and is so missed by many of us. He seemed to genuinely love the outdoors, the fish, the people, just being alive. A good example--rest well Jose.

This absolutely broke my heart and made me cry. I loved watching him when I was younger and heard that he passed from cancer and was so bummed. Well while watching this today and thinking - how could this be his last show and his last fish when he looks so healthy and then seeing it was in a stupid plane crash, well it just broke my heart. Unbelievable of the out of body signs that he gave us - him getting emotional at the end and saying how nice it was fishing with friends. And then of course the boats name behind him. God's signs for sure. What are the chances of that boat being right behind him with that name? RIP Hose, you were a great man and taken way to soon......

I just watched the final episode of the, "Spanish Fly" and it brought tears to my eyes. I had the pleasure of fishing with him in a Chuck Lamar tournament for the Tampa chapter of the Piediactric cancer association in the late 90's. What a great guy to spend time with. So many stories and laughs on a tough day of fishing. Horrific cold, windy, rainy day in Tampa, Florida. It would have been very for him to pass on the trip. He couldn't do it to the kids ! Watching him catch his last tarpon especially when it became faul hooked on the dorsal fin was really something. 3 hours later he was gone. A Gentleman till the end.🎣🎣🎣

Finally made it to Key west couple of year ago to target Tarpon. Contacted Capt Mike W. from Jose's Spanish fly site. Coupled of days before the charter Capt Mike told me that I'll be fishing with this guy that's a blast to be with and will work hard for your fish. Well he busted his butt to get me and my buddy to hook up. We got our tarpon!! 45min fight on a 85pounder. We had to land him quick as we thought there was a shark around. An hour before I asked he ever had a chance to meet Jose from Spanish fly he said "yeah, great guy. I'm also marrying his daughter." Thanks Capt Dave!(Grateful Dave Charters)All in the family, great day. Thanks for this episode too.
