He got injured though didn't he, I remember it as Chelsea were a bit desperate to get him, Liverpool were potentially aware he wasn't 100% right, as in he'd lost pace. Chelsea just sort of acted on his reputation as a Liverpool player. But he did score some very important goals for Chelsea after an initial dissapointing spell.

Even if his goal wins the cup the club didn't buy him for that single goal. The club bought him with a lot of money to see him play like how he was in his Liverpool days. But that never came. So he was not performing as expected and the club suffered for that decision. For many results that didn't go well because he was underperforming. There are some periods where a player was kept chosen but underperforming so bad that it really was the weak point of the team. There's that period for Cahill, Ivanovic, etc. but not as long as Torres at Chelsea. Still the club was clinging to him for too long hoping for him to perform. And it would be much better for Chelsea if they just accepted the lost. Because they're losing games more trying to keep playing him while at that time the club has other choices. Even the academy player was actually worth a try because it's that bad. Same with Timo Werner now. This should be his last season to prove his value. Which up to this point he still can't reach that value. Chelsea is better to try to sell him even with loss, that is better than keep trying to play him.

I think there’s a lot of revisionism around Torres suddenly becoming bad overnight when he signed for Chelsea. He was already on a downward curve with 9 goals in 26 games for Liverpool and constant knee problems. Then he joins Chelsea, is shifted right wing or playing in a two which he and Drogba both didn’t suit, it’s no wonder his struggles in front of goal got even more severe - with a lot of bad luck too it must be said, he was a bit like Werner with the amount of times he hit the bar or was a toenail offside etc. But while he clearly lost his yard of pace and his confidence to finish, his all round play was really good. He impressed me a lot more with his linkup, his combativeness in duels and his hold up play than he ever did at Liverpool in those aspects - where I think he was purely focused on goals. Chelsea also didn’t adapt to his needs it must be said. But he made the best of a bad situation and I think every Chelsea fan remembers him really fondly for his work ethic and his attitude, which he acknowledged in interviews too and that endeared him to us even more. The real villain in the whole thing is Abramovich overruling our scouting team’s recommendation of Aguero (who was begging to join) so that he could have a ‘big established name’ instead!

At one point for lfc I saw torres as the far less classy heir to henry in the premier league. Watch his goals vs marseill away 08, chelsea home 07 or west ham away 09. He had the knack of squaring up to his man on the left channel and beating him to the point of getting a shot off usually far post but someones near(west ham one i mentioned). He was the perfect number 9 for rafas conservative 4-2-3-1, speed on and off the ball, immense control (assist vs everton 09, goal vs inter 07, goal vs blackburn 09) great hold up play, goals with both feet and head, with the gerrard/torres link up being as good a partnership as you could want. The issue? Torres was barely ever fit. In 2008/09 lfc finished 2nd torres started 13/38 alongside gerrard. 10+ years on lfc have come across the perfect manager and everyones forgot torres but in his short prime and in rafas system he really was immense

I think big players sometimes move too soon. Hazard, torres, coutinho, many more. May be better to stay when you are in top form, and figure out what things make you have good form, and what other things make you lose form. Then, when you know yourself slightly better and what you need in order to thrive, get your move. Shame a football career is so short.

He got a big injury at Liverpool and while he came back he scored a few goals to make it look like he was returning to form. In fact it was the opposite it was the embers of a once great player and Liverpool knew it, they sold him knowing his best days were behind him. That brief bit of form before his Liverpool end was very deceptive. It made it look like his Chelsea career was down to poor form. It wasn't, a big part of Torres' game was physical and he had lost that edge. He became ordinary but under a cloud of 'not fitting'. He was just done.

The issue with Torres was that he came at a bad time to Chelsea. In the middle of the season. Drogba still as number. Manager's job under threat. Had he come in during the summer transfer window. Things would have been better for him. New manager, new season. Drogba was losing a bit of his speed so he wasn't playing every game. Mata just came in. Things would have played out differently.

It was a system Chelsea used. Big kudos to him and Timo Werner. They have adapted and provided goals at some stages to fit in. Chelsea have used runners from midfields and wings, where everyone can score, notably Lampard. Hence, they need someone strong upfront who can hold the ball, like Drogba, Diego Costa but also convert the goals if needed

I agree, Liverpool were set up with Gerrard as the out ball with the intent of looking too feed it to Torres asap, however, he seemed to drop off before Liverpool sold him, his last year or so in a Liverpool shirt he really was not great, and even in a team set up to use his A game, he was not performing. It may have been a mental thing but I really think Liverpool actually got a great deal , and replaced Torres with Suarez, ...who was unbelievably even better , even than peak Torres , if only we had not wasted loads f the Torres money on Carroll, we might have done more in that period lool

Weak minded, if we’re being harsh; he’d began to lose form towards the end of his time at Liverpool. He’s also openly said many times that Gerrard was his greatest ever partner and “brought the best out of him”- he never established that kind of chemistry with any Chelsea player.

Playing as a centre forward for José is incredibly hard. There are so many great centre forwards that flopped under him and that he chased away in very little time. I can only think of 4 who really thrived under him and he managed over 16 different ones. He’s looking for a Drogba/Diego Costa type ideally. Tall, strong, aggressive, provocative, explosive and someone who loves being isolated and dives head first into anything. Torres, Shevchenko, Mutu & Higuain are more classy, composed finishes with a more collective style of play. It’s a question of philosophy more than anything. It’s Ancelotti that brought Torres to Chelsea. The idea of football he had was different

He was not the same in his final 6-9 months at Liverpool, but the initial few seasons for Liverpool he was exceptional. I have to say it though....Suarez was even better. If you had told me in 09 that the guy that would come after Nando would be even better I would have laughed, but he was, even if Suarez was a total fuckstick, Having said all this, Nando was one of the best lone strikers I have seen, Suarez was more involved with the team in terms of his play, Torres was a powerful, fast, skilled, and intelligent forward that was magic at his peak, and truly unplayable. Suarez would beat an entire defence and score, but Torres was probably the best I have seen with a "1 defender to beat and shoot" situation (Maybe Henry? but we are talking that level) But Chelsea did not get that guy. They got a still very good layer but he just did not have the dynamic presence he dominated with only months before that

But, damt You give him a great through ball, He is going to poach it, make it a 1v1 with the Goalkeeper and scores ! Its sad, the Torres couldnt fit in Chelsea and Chelsea couldnt get the Beast they brought, but still a Big Match Winner, that shows the Quality of Torres
