Carreras is a tenor with unique emotional gifts both in his vocal sound as well as in his performance choices. I would forgive him his flaws. They make him Carreras. He more than compensates with that emotion which you cannot separate from the voice itself. More than any other voice, the tenor (for me at least) is the most exposed, the most in danger..like a man up on a trapeze or an astronaut risking all to walk on a moon...the tenor risks everything and we root for him, we internally go with him as he rises to notes that are impossible to imagine hitting, muscular, resplendent, virile and heroic. And with all that in mind, dont you hear Jose ....even more than others.... giving us his "all".... this effort and stretch is part of his gift.
