This *would* be a valid theory, if there was any evidence the Yakuza franchise and the Like A Dragon/Ryu Ga Gotoku franchise were set in the same universe, but they are clearly completely different

Interesting theory. This is honestly not as ridiculous as that theory that Margit (early boss in Elden Ring) is the same as Morgott (mid-late game boss). It's actually almost as plausible as the Sans (Undertale) is Ness (Earthbound) theory.

Technically, he "died" because some politicians were afraid of him, because he had dirt on them, iirc. In reality, he didn't died in y6. He just decided to acquire a new identity, and let his older one "die". He only did this, in order to protect haruka, haruto and pretty much, everyone in the orphanage. By doing this, he was a dead man walking essentially. He couldn't no longer hang out with whatever friends he has at this point, nor even interact with haruka, the kid and anyone else in the orphanage, as he is pretty much "dead". And thus, he became the man who erased his name. Occasionally showing up, because -RGG wants to milk as much content as they possibly can from kiryu- some trouble comes up every once in a while, which he can't ignore. Meanwhile, RGG doesn't care one bit about majima, even though the fans love him. He will never be given an happy ending, because RGG hates him! (why you not make him playable? Why only make him playable in like ONLY 2 GAMES?!)

Conspiracy therory time: Joryu is the one that does things like shooting people and shooting that rocket launcher, he's the one whos been killing and trying to pin the blame on Kiryu. Thats why in the games so many people want to fight, even random people on the street. Can't wait for when Kiryu finds out and has to beat Joryu to save himself from slander.

It's actually insane how many body double's we've actually had in Yakuza, Kazama's brother, Yakuza 7, Kazuki's body double, it would be crazy if it ACTUALLY wasn't Kiryu 🤣

I also recall Kaito's younger appearance being based on the beta kiryu model as well, so maybe kiryu went undercover as kaito.

Here’s the thing, Akira Nishikiyama (Kiryu’s best friend from Y0/Y1) can correctly identify Kiryu-since he is his best friend. Since we’ve never seen Nishiki interact with Joryu, we can never be certain if Joryu is Kiryu. Otherwise we would’ve seen Nishiki point that out.

it's not uncommon for devs to re-use character models, for example the diner lady at the start of arkham knight who serves you in the POV from the policeman's perspective is actually poison ivy's model. they probably just re-used kiryu's model for joryu to save on time, including his socks.
