Frans Steyn, when he played with the sharks, before the matches he would go out and just entertain the crowd with some practice kicks. Mind you, this was in Durban, at sea level. @@jaymeister4850 it’s normally just a bit of fun. Historically Wales would be oppressed by the English and there were a few rebellions. Then the Tudors became kings and queens of the English throne who had Welsh heritage and used the Welsh dragon as their emblem. Then the last Tudor died with no heirs so a Scottish cousin took the throne. All madness and mixed up, just different bits of culture all shoved in a very small space. Luckily when it comes to rugby everyone is quite respectful and it’s all normally friendly banter.

Very entertaining. As a former 80/90's rugby player/kicker I'm not sure this kind of comparison with Paul Thorburn is possible. This is like comparing Roger Federer with Bjon Borg. 1. Modern Paul is half the weight of the 1980's ball and "flies better". 2. Boot Technology in contact area and stress on standing foot improved. 3. Tee's not used in those days (not even a bucket of sand that was used in the 90's). Getting under the ball perfectly took huge skill. Paul had one attempt. these guys had 5. Good old heel in the ground to make a whole stuff!!!! 4. The modern pitch/turf has way more purchase on the standing food. 4. Mental toughness in "live test" conditions. these guys has no spectators to boo if they failed! The reason the Thornburn kick is so historic I guess is that the World Record still stands. Quite amazing 35 years on.

I have not seen a better kick than his penalty against the All Black in 1978 (watched on TV replay - as was 2rs old in '78) . During kickabouts at training, I regularly watched him stroke the ball over from near on 70 metres. His best trick was a drop goal from the corner flag which he never missed. None of the actual players in the squad could do what he could do in his 50's. To this day I have not seen a more natural kicker of the ball. Remember, this was all done without a kicking tee. It's all well when you kicking without the pressure of spectators and your opponents staring down on you. So, in this "test", bring on Frans Steyn at Ellispark! I remember he slotted monster penalty!!! The whole rugby world took note of that kick. And he's done these long once quite often!

@@pickarooney you realize having a heavier ball could be a possible advantage. Try throwing a good sized stone then throwing a lighter kind of stone. The heavier stone will be less impeded because it is more more dense so the force on it will be greater. Obviously not too dense. The resistance from the air will have less effect. Dont worry though. Most peoples opinions in this thread are non sensical
