Jordan Peterson - The Biggest Reason For Failure

original source: • Video
Psychology Professor Dr. Jordan B. Peterson says that the biggest reason why people fail is that they don't ever set the criteria for success. It can be a daunting task, because setting goals also means to set the criteria for failure.

Though I’d argue, through my own experience with depression, that it is flawed. There is meaning to depression, and for me it was the harshest, worst possible realisation I needed that the values/beliefs and coping strategies I had developed (unhealthy, putting a mask on), were no longer sustainable. I knew I had to pay attention to why this had happened, and after a long two years reconciled with this fact: depression occurred to teach me at a young age invaluable lessons about life to take forward with me, to listen to my gut, how to conduct inner dialogue, and much much more.

+burlangoustine The media has been working tirelessly to make Christianity look stupid and useless for the last sixty years. Have you ever seen a Christian character on TV that wasn't at least a hypocritical weasel if not a thief and a sex pervert et al? And why is it that they always push the most extreme fundamentalists in our faces and make like that's the default version of Christianity - which it was not when I was growing up. They want you to think that Christians all believe the earth is only six-thousand years old and that everybody who isn't exactly like them is going to burn in hellfire. They want you to believe that all Catholic priests are child molesters. You're not imagining it. It's been happening for decades. And they have succeeded in reducing the number of churchgoers to almost zero. The media is hellbent on eradicating the Christian faith and they are succeeding brilliantly in that endeavor...

You can have the perfect plan, yet if you do not act upon it, then it is nothing. There comes a time when one must put this knowledge to use. Knowing what to do and doing it are two different things.

I absolutely love martial arts, however, many practitioners do not talk about the fact that your body is not at all designed to engage in physical combat. So, when you kick another human, you're going to hurt yourself a lot even though you are throwing the kick. However that double edged blade is worth all the pain for a dream.

I'm 47 years old, I have no job, recently divorced, no outlook, failing health, lost my parents and some of my family in a series of tragic events that really took a toll on my sanity. I love Jordan Peterson but I'm really not sure what to do at this point. And I've been in therapy for decades and cannot rid myself of a very debilitating depression, anxiety and cptsd, and just an overwhelming feeling of emptiness that I remember since early childhood. no matter what I tried, and believe me I did. I'm here by mistake. or paying for something I did in a past life. I'm at a total loss, and at this point, just accepting it for what it is. I think that happens sometimes for some people, and it is not necessarily a bad thing. It just is. The main problem I truly and utterly do feel that NOTHING really interests me anymore and I have absolutely no passion for any subject. I did study and did work in the past and touched almost every field you can imagine, but always felt it was eventually useless. Apart from loved ones in my life, nothing ever brought me any joy. zero, nada. I look at this world which can indeed be beautiful, and understand I am a total nihilist. Society today is extremely demanding and motivational, people who are not 'successful' are ousted and frowned upon, or are forcefully encouraged to do something with themselves. I think it is my right not to. This is my life and I choose to enjoy the little things I still can until I can't any more. The only thing I can think of is me turning back the clock 30 years and doing everything different from the moment I finished high-school. That might have helped, but it's not going to happen, so I'm just here... Until I won't be. I am OK with it. This is my very different POV. I might be rare, but not unique. Some of us really do see no point. Perhaps there isn't one.

Most of this is guys talk is rubbish. I say this after I failed my final attempt of my pharmacy registration. I did 4 years of university got my degree. Then tried to pass my registration. I failed the test the first time where I got 32 in my calcs paper out of 40 and got 82 out of 120...and needed 85 to pass... My second attempt I got 25 put of 40 in calcs and I got 96 in clinical from 120...i failed my calcs by 1 mark.... Then on my final attempt I got 90 in clinical and an invigilator interrupted my calcs exam... Like I killed my self for over 2 yrs studying day in and day out whilst trying to work.... And I couldn't pass my registration.. Now I have a pharmacy degree but can't use it to work as a pharmacist... So it becomes useless other than pharmaceutical jobs which are hard to get into... Plus I can be a pharmacy dispenser but after 4 years of uni and studying 2 years into registration do I want to go back and be a dispenser.. It's stressful even when I step in the pharmacy

My problem isn't knowing what needs to be changed but rather actually changing. Why is it so hard to get out from under the rut and actually be productive. I learn new things and tend to excel at whatever I put my mind to but I have such a huge problem with being motivated enough to actually learn new things, or go out and be social and get a job. I just lost my job and I don't know what I'm going to do about it. There are so many regrets that I have in life and I want to rectify that but I have this mental blockade stopping me from doing what I need to do and I don't know how to stop it. It's an awful position to be in. I wouldn't wish this on anyone. I hope everyone experiencing something similar finds their way out. I hope you thrive in whatever you choose to do and I hope that you may help people in similar situations one day. Much love to you all.

That's a new concept to me. Caring for myself like I'm someone else I care about. It kinda makes sense. Some people find it easier to care for someone else than themselves. Conceptualizing yourself as separate can make the regard you have easier. In other words, treat yourself like a real person to to help you help yourself easier. That made more sense in my head.

He's incredible. One of a kind. I hope he's getting better! I can not imagine the heartache he must have felt when realising he'd become dependant on PRESCRIBED medication. Such courage to try and tackle the issue head on the way that he did. We all get older, we'll all become unwell as it happens. Why and how some people have reacted to him being sick in such an evil way baffles me. I'm assuming they never sorted out their own rooms. Doubt they ever will either the wimps! Much love to you, Dr Peterson AKA my one true hero 😘

Exactly this. Figure out what you're passionate about, figure out a career that allows you to achieve that general aim, sacrifice as MUCH AS YOU CAN to achieve that aim, and in a few years, you'll have achieved what you thought impossible and so much more. If you pursue a single goal single-mindedly, it becomes very feasible to achieve, as I've discovered. You need to really WANT it, though. As he says, you need to be DEATHLY serious about wanting to achieve it.

Such profound words of wisdom! I think what he is referring to here is self-analysis in terms of looking inwards. When we carve out time on a daily basis to reflect, think about what matters and who we truly want to be, we will be rewarded with powerful insights and knowledge. I have seen this in my life!

This vid really did put together some pieces that I needed to stop myself from blowing my brains out. I haven't totally decided I won't ever yet, but he just perfectly summarized my idea's ( or gave them to me I can't remember) on what I should do about it. But I remember pretty vividly crying in the car and going through the logic. If I am suffering everyday sulking is the worst thing to do, this limbo of suffering is the worst place to stay. ANTE UP! Either DO IT, OR DON'T. But if I don't that means I need to do EVERYTHING in my power to make it worth it. I decided I hate my situation and I have a vision for how I want things to be. I am quite idealistic. I want that girl that just makes my world go round. But if I want my ideal girl, who makes sense partnered with her? Well... that would be the ideal man. Who is that? That is what I am looking to narrow down to and become. Once I can become something close to that I can pursue my girl and have a life. I think it looks something like being fit, strong, being able to provide for myself and a family, educated, intelligent, thoughtful, caring, having a mission in life and actually doing something for the people around me. That honestly sounds like a pretty full plate there and would take a while to get to. Hopefully if I can chase that mission I can get that girl of my dreams ( Anna Shcherbakova baby here I come) But it really takes a lot of sacrifices, and looking in the mirror. Lots of exercising is hard work, but I am so happy to have turned my life around from wasting time playing games. Glad to be away from abusive family members. Realizing my problems and trying to face them head on, there is no one to blame now. Finally getting up on my feet and getting a chance. I hope it goes well...

apathy, is often underestimated, its hypnotic in its affliction. where everything becomes too much trouble, even when you know what you need to do, and know full well you can do it, that feeling, some describe as 'chronic fatigue' or laziness, as i'd be more inclined to say, is one hell of a negative force to fight with. especially when you're 'comfortable'. people get settled, they get soft, and then one day, they panic, that life is passing them by. i guess this is what they call a form of midlife crisis?

what if the most remarkably stupid thing I do on a regular basis to absolutely screw up my life, mainly by sapping far too much of my productivity and time, is also the only way I could have been exposed to this information to know to even ask myself that question? perhaps even time wasted can have value...unfortunately the rarity of that exception serves more to prove the rule than to disprove it, but it still felt worth mentioning for some strange reason ;)

From self observation I derived that in my case I'm hesitating to take care of myself. I come from a deep place - the place of not caring about anything. But I am very supportive of the noble, the virtuous and the selfless. Thus to me to start thinking of myself as of someone I loved and genuinely cared about carries a great risk of going off-road into extreme selfishness and malevolence. You see, I'm one of the 99% of the people who have yet to discover their Shadow, and negotiate with it to integrate it. Thus I think (maybe naively) that the best way to shelter myself and society from the devil I could become is to let it sleep - which mean to lead a miserable boring uninteresting life where most of the times when I'm thinking of the world and the future I'm scared madly. What I've yet to attempt is to believe in myself and my capacity of self control, and to trust my family that they'll hold me back if I really attempt to do something evil. From the point of not caring about anything to living a meaningful life the only way is through checkpoints which include saving oneself first and not looking at the price of selfishness but what it actually might bring, and how a better "me" could be better for myself and the world than the "spineless me". I'm still having an internal conflict over this issue.

Don't give out any shit but don't take any shit either! If you want to spare the world from your omnipotent wrath then believe in G O D (who will also protect you, (so there's a bonus in everything in life)) 😷👍 There you have a choice: Lead a fruitful existence with your power for good and contribute to mankind and be protected by God or, be a spineless slave to some evil alter-ego demon which is also two bangers short of a barbecue....
