Jordan Peterson's Philosophy of "How to be in the World" distilled down to its 5 strongest points

Ойын-сауық

Check out our second talk with Peterson about the movie Gladiator and the Jungian concept of 'Individuation' right here! • Responsibility, consci...
Jordan Peterson responds in full to the Channel 4 interview and its aftermath. He also elaborates on what we think are the five strongest points of his philosophy on "how to be in the world", namely:
1- The centrality of the archetypal hero's myth
2- The central role of the Logos during the hero's narrative
3- Making the right sacrifices when bargaining with the future
4- Orienting yourself towards the highest possible good you can conceive
5- Minimise your persona, cultivate your essence, and live in its closest possible proximity
Enjoy! We sure did.
We wrote down an elaborate summary of those five points, with Peterson's relevant lectures embedded in the text.

Yea man he listened to like 100 hours of lectures in preparation for this interview. He even put in the effort of condensing the material down into a TL;DR for us all. Props. Now that I have seen a man who has listened to a few of Dr. Peterson's most important lecture series in their entirety, I'll have to put in the time and do that myself

JaimeG88 , It wouldn't surprice me if they picked this specific interviewer because they know he follows Jordan and can present the interview in a fairly neutral manner. Nobody prepares that much so they must have picked someone who followed a lot of Jordan in his personal time or since his visit to the Netherlands was announced given him a LOT of preperation time but given its about a recent event i don't think thats likely.

BOB money If you liked the interviewer support him, report this re-upload and watch it on GeenStijl's channel. The guy, Timon, did a good job and worked extremely hard to make this interview possible. To see this scumbag "DoseOfTruth" just re-uploading the whole thing mere instants after GeenStijl uploaded it and sucking all his hard-earned money away from him with one single click, without even linking to the original and even lying about it "it was a mistake", is simply dishonest, pathetic and very very low. This "DoseOfTruth" guy should be ashamed of himself, he is just another egocentric, self-victimising millennial who meanwhile says he already made at least a thousand dollars of other people's work. GeenStijl is suffering hard under all sorts of campaigns to draw advertisers away from them due to their alleged "misogyny, homophobia, racism, sexism etc." and the Dutch government has been trying long and hard to ban them. They really need the money. kzread.info/dash/bejne/d2qlpNqnj8usdLQ.html

We're exposed to American and English television a lot, and also learn English as a second language first from elementary school onwards, not to mention the internet, and games that are usually not translated in our native language unless aimed at very young children. German and French are taught in high school, depending on the school's education level and student's preferences, but English is always mandatory. I'd argue most of us, the younger generation especially, speak Dutch and English first, and maybe secondarily German and/or French. In the past we were more exposed to German and French/Belgian television and culture instead, so the older Dutch generation is often more adept at speaking those languages.

(34:45) The absolute centrality of the archetypal hero's myth, 2. (55:25) The main instrument during this hero's narrative is the logos, 3. (1:09:17) The way to be in the world is to be oriented towards the highest possible good you can conceive of because it's not as if you have anything better to do, 4. (1:25:33) Make the right sacrifices to walk with God - as a judgmental father, as an articulation of the discovery of being able to bargain with the future. 5. (1:41:17) Minimize your persona, cultivate your essence and live in as close as possible proximity.

Shamest If you liked the interviewer support him, report this re-upload and watch it on GeenStijl's channel.

Dr. Peterson, you don't receive hate mail, because you are speaking and acting very genuine, there is no provoking, no vicious triumphing at cost of other people. You are a smart and very wise man and anyone with a little brain capacity recognizes this. Writing hate mail to you would feel the exact same as slapping the truth in the face. Keep up the good work and remember, many women/girls/females follow and love your work ♥

No, not at all! I found Dr Peterson through the podcast of Sam Harris, since then have been listening to his lectures and I am deeply impressed by his brilliance. As a female I completely agree with his message to men, I was raised by a strong, dominant but very loving father (go clean your room, sounds so familiar, lol), for me men should be heroes, strong and protective and manly. Today it seems that masculinity by default is offending and females by default are victims. I am a female and I am 1.60m, if a man stares in my eyes and I don't like it, I just look away, if a man uses language that offends me I make myself a bit taller and tell him to stop. Walking around as a victim of course you gonna be one. Being a victim and claim all women are victims does not feel feminist to me, how the hell can that empower us? Claiming all men are predators is just as insane, MY world is filled with mostly nice and responsible men. I hope more females speak up, back up our men, because I guarantee the media is giving a lot of attention to the crazy harpies, it gives a lot of revenue as click bait, but most of us DO NOT feel this way.

Attempting Anonymity Fair point, I don't know anything about him and all I could find is in Dutch, he certainly seems receptive in a fashion that could be pejoratively dismissed as fanboy but I still think that particular question was good. On the broader scheme it would be nice to see an interviewer who was neither for nor against but had researched the it subject and asked telling questions which isn't happening either here or with Newman or really anywhere in the media. Which I suppose was your point :)

  • @omp199

    @omp199

    6 жыл бұрын

Attempting Anonymity - Well done for speaking the truth! It is ironic that one of Jordan Peterson's core messages in this interview is that we should always speak the truth, and yet nobody else seems to dare to admit that Timon Dias's contributions to this video were almost vacuous. He's clearly very familiar with Dr. Peterson's work, which is certainly a necessary condition for conducting a good interview, but it is not sufficient. For a good interview, you also have to be able to engage constructively with what the interviewee is saying. Both Cathy Newman and Timon Dias were bad interviewers, for opposite reasons. Ms. Newman was bad because she simply ignored or misrepresented everything that Dr. Peterson said, not making any effort to understand his point of view. Mr. Dias was bad because he simply agreed with everything that Dr. Peterson said, without making any effort to challenge or even meaningfully engage with it. His interview technique was little more than reading - or perhaps paraphrasing - Dr. Peterson's words to him, and then saying things along the lines of, "What do you mean by that?" and, "Can you expand on that?" The only parts where Mr. Dias broke away from that pattern was when he asked personal questions, such as about Dr. Peterson's dancing ability and about his family, which to be honest made me a little uncomfortable, as he seemed to be treading on the boundaries of propriety, there. Don't get me wrong. I greatly enjoyed this video and I think I got a lot out of it. But it was only Dr. Peterson's contributions that were of any interest. The interview was little more than a monologue with prompts.

omp199 oh gosh darn it! You are right, I think I've just reached the point where I see so little polite yet incisive debate that if someone does even a moderately good impression of it I will applaud it, because I hope to encourage more... but your statement that this is almost the opposite of the Newman interview whilst it may be a little unfair is close enough to true that it really makes me stop and think! As I said in my last reply we need incisive informed but not sycophantic or contrarian interviewers and there just don't seem to be any around. Still, this is one of the most civil and thoughtful internet threads I've been on in a long time and that alone gives me some hope, many thanks, G

I have so much more respect for this man after this. I use to watch some of his interviews before, but his caliber has risen after this, in the way he has handled all of this, and his level of understanding of all that he is experiencing, and is observing. A true psychologist and academic, I am glad to see they are not all gone in the hysteria of the current climate. I will be definitely be looking deeper into his work. Jordan Peterson has my respect, he is an example to all of us of how to earn respect, and not to fall into the pressure of the current political climate where some would like us all to think like a robot, a total insult to all the creative, independent souls, who genuinely wish to explore their own reality authetically.

I've seen enough interviews with Dr. Peterson to appreciate how well this guy managed this one. Some hosts feel like they aren't doing their job if they stay silent and so they'll interject or change the subject when they shouldn't. This guy understands you can just get Peterson started on a subject and he'll take his time with it and give you good shit. Jocko Willink got a great interview out of him the same way. There was like a 30 minute stretch where Jocko didn't say a word and he was smart enough to know he didn't need to.

Listening to Peterson is like watching an artist at work. Like listening to a musician compose music or a painter create a masterpiece! This man develops or refines philosophies with anyone and everyone. I'm sure Newman enriched his ability to understand human nature so much more.

What Jordan has said that has resonated with me the most, as a filmmaker, is his concept of bridging chaos and order to find meaning. I've never been able to properly articulate why I don't like some films, and why I love other films. It was always just a feeling. Once I heard Jordan said that, it was like my whole world shifted, and I finally understood what made a film great. In my four years in film school, none of my instructors came close to teaching us anything that could come close to that profound statement. For anyone thinking about going to film school, my advice would be not to waste your money on it. Buy your own equipment, a decent camera, maybe some audio equipment, and the Adobe Creative Suite, then read philosophy, and watch films. Film school is just neo-marxist, post-modern ideological possession.

Trevor Schmidt Productions I'd be interested in hearing you articulate. Tisch dropout here. I find that the best films possess tyrannical elements without becoming confined by the order that breathes life and meaning into them. I find a lot of smaller films today are obsessed with their own intellect and show more interest in playing with form and mocking their characters (if they're anything but pawns) than actually trying to tap into the character's being

I think you're absolutely right. Later in the interview when he spoke about how careful he's had to be with his words since the C-16 conflict erupted, I thought: you're in a different league now, Dr. Peterson; you need to be far more careful, and you failed back at 29:50. I have some faith that he can see this through to emerge with even greater support and impact, but I'm quite worried about that bit of the video, and wont be surprised if it turns very, very, very ugly.

Luis Guillermo Martinez Pinzon I actually think Walt was escaping his Shadow. And it was so apart of his character that it made him resentful which kind of caused his degeneration into cruel and manipulative, until it led to his whole reality falling apart (Hank's Death) and he knew the only way to refind himself with his shadow under HIS control was to avenge Hank and save Jesse. And complete his spoken goal of providing for his family, at least financially.

you missed the part of the meek shall inherit the earth. which translate to someone who can use a sword but keeps it sheathed. the sword is the shadow his persona is the sheath. with walter his persona(sheath) was weakened by is illness so he used his sword(shadow) because he had no alternative and he did it as little as possible but as time progressed his persona(sheath) broke and started using his sword more and more wildly when he should of kept it under control. eventually he finally gained control of his sword(shadow) and managed to patch together his persona(sheath) to save what was important. the moral of the story is that if he had trained with the sword(shadow) to strengthen his persona(sheath) beforehand then his shadow(sword) wouldn't have broken his persona(sheath) which wouldn't have caused so much suffering by his wild swings.

He was knowledgable enough to not disrupt the thought train with some ignorant comment like some interviewers I've seen with Peterson. Jordan definitely didn't have to dumb anything down and I felt it really allowed Jordan to articulate his thoughts efficiently. It seemed like they had a good connection and I feel like Jordan was happy with who he was talking to.. he looked and sounded comfortable. I think they still have that mischievous side to them but they have very competent staff. They just decide to do a different thing. However, I think that with this interview, they correctly concluded that it would be a waste of an opportunity to be edgy and they wouldn't want to be that with this guy. It showed what they are capable of if they have their compass aimed at North. Good interview. The only critique I have (little point) is the many 'yes' points.
