My advice for anyone wanting to get over anxiety/depression: 1. Quit alcohol - there is nothing good about it. It's highly calorific, poisonous to your liver and it makes you do stupid things when you've had too much of it. 2. Avoid smoking and any type of drugs. 3. Eat healthily - breakfast, lunch, dinner, with limited snacking in between. 4. The only drink you ever need is H2O - certainly cut out all soft drinks, energy drinks and fruit smoothies. 5. Go for a run in the park - not on a treadmill in the gym. The fresh air is good and the nature is beautiful. 6. Lift weights - looking good physically will do wonders for your confidence and self-esteem. 7. Go to bed early and wake up early - very rarely is anything productive achieved after 10pm. 8. Take pride in your career and be passionate about your job, no matter how humble it may be. 9. Make somebody smile everyday, either by a kind word or a good deed. Making other people feel better will make you feel better, and it takes the focus off yourself. 10. Stop dwelling on the past and worrying about the future. Live in the present. Remember that the present moment is the only thing that is ever real. Everything else is in your mind. Lastly, get off the f**king internet. Social media is sewage. Limit yourself to half an hour of internet a day. Meet people in real life and have real social interactions. Good luck!

Only take once or twice a week. No distractions like cell phone. Full sleep .GO TO BED EARLY . 4.run ,run ,run, run or lift or any physical work. 5.turn down the sensory overload. Playing chess effectively can increase your ability to problem solve, teach creative thinking, teach strategic thinking, and a bunch of other benefits that are going to help you in life. It teaches you how to lose, and that actions have consequences. By the way, why did you assume that because someone plays chess, they don't also have a career in science? It sounds like you could use some critical thinking yourself, I suggest playing chess sometime it helps.

I had a very underwhelming position at my job, drank all the time, ate like shit and quit hanging out with friends but just this past year I asked my boss for more responsibility and ended up getting two promotions within 4 months, started lifting weights at the gym, eating healthier (intermittent fasting so I don't eat until 5 pm most days), and started playing guitar more instead of indulging in mindless video games during free time...gotta say, setting goals and challenging yourself will heal you more than any pill. I've become hyper-analytical in almost every situation I am in outside of the home (for various reasons) to the point that it is exhausting my mental reserves and I experience fogginess and headaches and a debilitating decrease in concentration and focus. Meditation has helped _tremendously_ and continues to do so. Another practice is to reign in your thoughts, instead of being lead around by your thoughts you simply practice getting into the habit of just observing your thoughts from a completely neutral standpoint and watch them disappear just as quickly as they appeared. It is about reclaiming your mental space as your own "house" and seeing your thoughts simply as guests that appear and disappear. Eventually you begin to separate yourself from your thoughts completely or more precisely separate your immediate emotional responses to your thoughts (at least the negative ones anyhow). This is helpful for *EXCESSIVE* thinkers/analyzers whose trait does more harm than good.

I know some people will hate me for recommending an herb but the numerous studies don't lie. It as been shown to reduce cortisol levels by 20 percent. Herbs don't work for everyone and you should only try it if you are NOT on medication or have a mild case of Anxiety. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3573577/

It also seems to help with headaches.

sounds like you are an extreme introvert. Feeling like people rob your energy levels is somewhat a sign. I get like that after an hour indoors with a group of people. Im good for short periods of time but after a while I need to step out. Usually somewhere in the open helps. Well I smoke too so that another reason. But typically I feel like I have to keep people engaged when i'm in close proximity and I hate an awkward silence so I put more effort which either annoys someone or gets me exhausted after 40 mins. You should try engaging people in short periods for a bit. Some of this is practice so that may help ease your social anxiety if you have that.

  • @Skylabz604

Well in that case you sound just like me. Except Im a bit older. Did you have periods of Anxiety and depression? I have good and bad days still but its under control. Im very good with new people as well and I can engage most people when I meet them but I get exhausted and lose interest with most. I was never diagnosed with ADHD because I did academically well but I honestly think ADHD is sometimes wrongfully diagnosed and typical lack of interest is normal when you are around topics and people that don't engage you. We have very selective interests. These days i cant be in a club or bar for too long unless Im drunk or doing something else. I get bored way too fast and leave most of the time. Are you good otherwise when doing something you like? I Excel at tasks that I have interest in and usually get good results so I think my personality is just very selective. Also people with higher than average IQ are known to show some of these traits. The boredom is just due to repetitive boring things than your mind is telling you is not worth your effort. Like a date with a girl that has nothing interesting to say....

I would recommend Martial Arts from my personal experience. At least for some people who are more athletic or find interest in combat sports and such. Not necessarily competition or hard sparring but letting your body learn how to move and work in cooperation with the mind. The training usually includes some weightlifting some cardio as well as eye-hand coordination, timing, mental strategy, etc. I think it's good to know how to use your body not just pick up heavy stuff but nothing wrong with lifting. That's my humble opinion.

Over the course of 2018 it began to lessen as I had more friends to chat with and a girl to like.. Yet socially, I'm still the anxious mess that I am.. I think so deeply about simple conversations.. Then afterwards contemplate better words to have said. It deeply troubles me how self analytic I am yet it has worked in my favor in being somewhat grounded in what I believe

I completely understand and can relate to that. What really helped me other than Jordan Peterson's very logical advice was to when I would overthink about anything that isn't serving me I say to myself "I'll cross that bridge when I get to it", I would repeat it when my overly analytical brain kicks in and I found it had a tremendous positive affect and it actually became a habit I use, if I ever i have to do any type of public speaking or interaction with anyone, by using those words I'll cross that bridge when I get to it our encounters and circumstances that we would usually overthink we tend to come across more naturally and intuitive. Hope it helps :)

To this day if I ever take more than a few days off, I start to feel it in my head. Also, being someone who is over analytical and highly anxious by nature, the "eat a big breakfast" is a fanradtic piece of advice. Low blood sugar caused many of my anxiety attacks. PRACTICE! When you find yourself focused on the wrong rhing you must practice diverting your thinking to more positive or productive things. We may not be able to stop these thoughts coming to mind (I couldn't) but we can choose to ignore them and focus on something else. At first it is very Hard. Our brain will just go straight back to those thoughts. But like anything, if we practice moving our thoughts to the right things, over time it gets Easier and Easier and eventually you'll often do it without thinking about it.

I've had a particularly difficult time recently with this exact issue, I find that there's a non stop chatter in my mind over certain things like dating or job prospects and it really gets me in a rut for weeks on end. Going to the gym yesterday after feeling nauseous for 2 weeks after digesting a minor friendship-related trauma I was able to eat again. My low blood pressure became became less low and more normal, I felt an overwhelming confidence which probably is a normal amount but relitively large amount for myself. I believe that the fundamental health and wellness solutions like doing regular exercise and eating well is honestly some of the best advice for people who struggle with this issue. I couldn't thank Dr.Peterson enough, you've completely changed my outlook and way of life for the better, not just for myself but for those around me too. Thank you

Many of those who overthink/overanalyse drink so to get a break from a *constantly spinning mind*. It's a 'reprieve', but of course it often become habit forming and addictive as I'm sure is not news to yourselves. Even those who would say they do not suffer with overanalysing drink for similar reasons... it's a nice break. You and your thoughts 'lighten up'. Consider meditation, if only to give your mind a f*cking break. Believe me, I know what I'm talking about as have (had) overanalysed more than half of my life away, and there were too many times I overindulged in drinking to 'aneasthetise' my mind. Ah, the brain cells lost (sigh). You can overcome your mind. Its a choice you can make. If interested let me know and I'll give you a very important pointer. Your mind may not like to hear what I'm telling you - as it likes to have ALL the power. Thus you may have switched off already. But I dare you to consider the possibility of a better way. (nope, not religion... that's your mind trying to put you off of considering another way) :O]

  • @TheOmnipresent12

@@J94R Probably the first thing I'd say is that you have to realise and have the desire to change. In many/most cases you will have had to have suffered over a longer term as the results from this in effect become your *leverage*. IOW the pain caused from suffering takes you to very dark and frightening places. Thus one needs to *realise that they have no choice but to wholeheartedly reprogram themselves at these DEEP levels*. So aside from considering Jordan Peterson's excellent advice you might take into consideration a spiritual 'tactic'. Again I should mention this is not some highly religious distraction but the method I am suggesting is to consider diving into some of Eckhart Tolles' work. Not knowing your exact situation means I can't direct you to one of his more relative talks that might be more helpful to you specifically so unless you inform me more of your situation all I can say is to perhaps start with some of his 'pain body' related talks. Something as well to consider if you haven't already is that amongst other things alcohol is a depressant so in the case of anaesthetising the mind you are greatly increasing the chances of full blown depression not to mention the punishing hangovers not dissimilar to 'coming down' from drugs people use to get out of their heads from as another temporary but counterproductive measure. I welcome your further thoughts on the matter.

Lift heavier so you need to focus on the weight not falling down on you. If you're just carelessly curling 2 pounds, you have all the time in the world to overthink things. It needs to be enough to the point where focus is required and you have to pay attention, otherwise you'll do it wrong and you won't produce results. - I'm a decently high trait neuroticism guy, with PDD-NOS (anxiety disorder), and an Introvert to boot -- Weightlifting helped me the most. I really don't think about anything at all besides lifting the weight, especially with something as heavy as benchpresses, because I bench like 2/3rds of my weight, if not 3/4ths. If I even lose attention for a little bit, I can risk dropping 70KG on my throat. That'd be the end of me.

The over analyzing bubble: If over-analyzing is a result of rumination and anixety, the person's own attemps to analyze tends to reach limited conclusions, where the inputs used to reach a conclusion lie in the person's limited rumination bubble. What happens mostly is: after a hard time analyzing the rumination cycles as a result of anixety, one of the survival mechanisims during those difficult periods is to adapt certain behaviours as a quick fix to reduce anixety, that might include: a radical shift in a person's attitude toward daily events, or projecting an opossite personality trait than the ones he used to demonstrate to others. The issue with this approach is that the inputs used to reach the final conclusion are limited and not suffiecient enough to make a huge behavioural change, which might cause a real social communication confusion and makes the original anixety rumination even worse after realizing that the behavioural changes did not work.

I’m anxious, over analytic, neurotic, and I ruminate. Eating exactly how Jordan said to eat absolutely works, and I stumbled upon it by chance several years ago before Jordan talked about it, so I know it’s not all in my mind. It was obvious that my anxiety dropped because of it. I also ate and slept at the same time everyday. My morning food was a big ass bowl of steak tips (about 1 lbs), and a bunch of veggies. 1 large cucumber. One small tub of grape tomatoes. One tub of spring mix salad. 2 or 3 large bell peppers. One small bag of baby carrots. After time I found myself wanting less food, so I ate about half in the morning and then the rest a few hours later. At night I would eat a handful of raw nuts. I needed zero exercise to lose all my extra body fat. Oh, I also severely cut down on my fapping to 2-3 times per week. Those were the best 2-3 months of my life. My mood, skin, body shape, brain function all improved drastically. I was happy and chicks were gawking at me for looking health as fuck. DO NOT THINK ITS OKAY TO EAT SHIT AGAIN. Just one cookie or brownie will give you the most intense cravings and stomach pains. Ask me how I know and how I fell off the wagon.

No matter who I watch and listen to on KZread (and there are a lot of informed, intelligent and enlightened speakers out there) I find myself returning to Jordan. He speaks so much sense but with compassion and intellectual understanding. Truth and integrity,, he is a great role model . I am working on simply trying to tell the truth to myself and those around me (or at least not lying) and that is a massive challenge, I am failing badly but I will keep trying and maybe I will get there. Most importantly ‘keep striving’ even if you don’t make every day , don’t give up. Yes life is difficult but this material society that has only been around for a very short time makes it harder than it should be. People are lonely and addicted and sad. The answer is connection to each other and the world but society has done everything to hinder that and encourage “the individual “ so we are individually selfish and yet totally following the group culture. I have always felt that the tribal people of this world are the ones that we should envy! Why do people take drugs? Often to mask pain and connect in real way to others. I remember clubbing on ecstasy in the 90’s and why did it feel so good? Because there was a feeling of love, acceptance and a collective consciousness. I don’t know how we go forward from here. Mindfulness is becoming popular but when you realise its all bullshit its hard to continue the charade. That’s where JP is good because he’s like the bridge between living in this life and being open to the new. Just communicate with people on a real level, even if it’s for 2 minutes, say what you really think and share. Some will think you’re weird and some will be grateful but at least it’s honest ffs,! Earlier tonight I had a guy asking for money for a charity and I stopped and gave him some bs about donating to charities and I will look at his but I’ve got potatoes on the boil and I’m in a rush. I then walked round the store in my nice clothes buying whatever and thought to myself “I bet he thinks I’m a real wanker, and I thought Jesus I am such a wanker! So on my way out of the store I stopped and said exactly what I was thinking to him and hey, we had a real conversation . It felt good. We should start groups in towns and cities around the world and connect.

Informative video. In life there are only 2 problems--mind and the body. To feel better reduce negative thoughts. Be careful what you feed your mind. Avoid comparing yourself with others, reduce negative social media and avoid constipation as it affects the mind. Your breathing is closely related to the brain [mind] and gives relief from stress-anxiety. For a relaxed mind observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for 10-15-20 minutes or more. You can sit or lie down, neck straight and eyes closed. Never meditate with expectations but with awareness. Don’t fight your thoughts. With practice the mind will relax. Keep a reminder to observe your breath sensations throughout the day and night --before sleep, when reading, at work, when sitting in the park etc. Like me, make this a lifetime habit to have a better life. Best wishes--Counsellor.

I'm currently an alcoholic due to my anxiety, and I'm anxious due to my over-analytic mind, and my concern is that I've already thought myself into a sort of existential oblivion and there's no way back from what I already know (which, inconveniently enough, is a place wherein I'm incapable of answering the questions I ask myself). I weigh myself down with booze and the certainty that, although I don't/can't understand my existence, I know how it feels to be happy - regardless of what "happy" is - and I take comfort in knowing that I always have that acquirable feeling on the horizon if I work for it, or, alternatively, there's always the option to opt out of the whole deal. Anyway, I'll strive on for a while yet I reckon. Much love peeps.

An active mind is both great and troublesome. Something that is typically overlooked is what I might call 'rest theory'. A little like the theory that starving oneself of food *a little* is actually good for you... your intestines get a break, you are far less likely to get fat and it's good for you (there are other benefits as I'm sure most can imagine). I believe the mind is similar in this way. I would challenge 'over thinkers' thus... can you 'not think' for 20 seconds? ... 10? Some call it meditation. Big bonus is, when you 'need' to use your mind for the wonderful tool that it is - your thoughts will be of much higher quality. Remember gents', a constantly spinning mind is far more prone to go off the rails one day. Spend a few moments imagining how nice it might be to quite literally... give it a rest.

I have GAD to and man it sucks and I’m only 15! It’s a pain to deal with. Being a perfectionist, needing to be comforted and reassured on what you’re doing , making sure everything you’re doing is right, overthinking, etc. One thing that I recommend is meditation. It really helps you should start with 10 minutes or less right when you wake up and before you go to sleep so that you can relax the mind.

Yeah I have avoidant personality disorders, and facing difficulties is the best way to feel better. If you avoid situations it gives you anxiety and rumination and you don't learn how to react during these events, you overanalyse and anticipate etc.

I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who this occurs to. I’m a grad student and during periods of heavy studying, and even sometime minimal stress, I tend to overthink and it really impacts my social life, my sleep and my overall well being. Sometimes I am constantly in fear of panicking that I have to get up and just tell myself it’ll b okay there’s is nothing wrong and that I’ll b fine, especially come night time. Luckily it’s summer and the workload is significantly less so I’m recuperating and feel much better. I actually have time now to sleep better, exercise and just take better care of myself. I find classical music and long walks extremely therapeutic. It’s funny cus my whole life i thought I was in control but I suppose it hits u when ur most vulnerable. Alcohol does help but I try to limit it considering it has neurological implications that might exacerbate some anxieties but honestly I can help it, it really helps especially come finals season. Caffeine is also something I should limit but similar to alcohol I am addicted to it. Things will improve, I’ll get over this but to the many who can’t or won’t I wouldn’t blow off Peterson’s advice. If that’s not possible see a physician, mental health is really important.

I'm a chronic over thinker. Continually pulling apart my thoughts in pursuit of often fruitless reasoning. The biggest, most powerful tool I've found to tame the relentless cycle of thoughts is Transactional Analysis. Knowing the function of ego states and understanding what my mind is doing has allowed me to focus my thoughts more than anything. 👍

Overanalysing is a trapping of energy in the head. The key is to practice doing inner bonding/ inner feeling work. So that you can drop energy down into body. Then you move from analysing to awareness

AirEnderman "inner feeling" isn't referring to your emotions or mental analysis. It means focusing on something like your breathing or feeling the tension in your muscles for example. Essentially switching your brain from Analysis to Awareness. Basically what the physical aspect of meditation is - which is something scientists are learning more about recently and recommending it more and more

Notato My mind's is far too active to focus on a single thing for too long. My mind will only begin to wander and then I lose 5282783 hours of sleep. Glad it works for a lot of others, but my life philosophy of never not-thinking and despising naivety doesn't help. I really wish I didn't have that philosophy, but I fear it's become a part of my psyche. I'll just play a game and eat a hefty breakfast, I think.

Here, in a nutshell is the best reason anyone will hear for being over-analytical...and something similar has happen many times since. In 2006 my wife, my three year daughter and i went on holiday to Spain. During the course of that holiday we took our daughter to the hotel paddling pool(i noticed a sign saying NO LIFEGUARDS ON DUTY). My wife starting reading her book. I sat twenty feet away from our three year old and her new-found friend, raising my hand up to the mother and father of the other little girl to give re-assurance. The big pool was only 10 ft away from the small pool(i took note of it..this seemed close to me, especially as the big pool dropped from the point of entry at a very steep angle)...i looked in it and did NOT feel safe. Five minutes later i started to imagine our daughter getting out of the little pool and walking straight into the big pool...and going under. Then SUDDENLY it actually happened in front of me but it was not our daughter but the little girl and her parent's minds were occupied. In that split second i worked out that she was going to get in the pool and disappear under. I screamed to my wife to grab our daughter and ran at full speed, never taking my eye off that little girl because at that moment i realised, she may as well have been my daughter and within five feet of me jumping after bolting at full running pace i watched her head go under and she was gone....SPLASH and i practically ended up on top of her and tore her out from under the water, handing her over to her(by now) screaming mother and father. I lost my glasses and started to go under for them. I found them and a woman nearby helped me wipe them off. I returned to my seat to see my wife and daughter hugging with my wife holding her tight. They laughed at my wet adidas trainers slopping around as i sat down. I dried off and the father came over and shook my wet hand. He was distraught that they could have lost their daughter in that split second and kept repeating "THANK GOD FOR YOU SIR...THANK GOD FOR YOU"(he was German...i am a Brit). He offered us all an ice-cream. I myself declined the ice-cream telling him i was not good with milk.I then walked off in bare feet to attend an archery competition. Now to the interesting bit. Whilst i was firing my last arrow, a woman stepped up beside me and said two things i have never forgotten. The first was "You are the gentleman who saved that little girls life aren't you?". Naturally i was speechless and stuttered a little and said.."i think she would have been ok..i probably over-reacted most likely". Then she seemed to get a little emotional and said.."my husband saw the same thing and went to take his shoes off and watched you fly by him and jump across that pool in, what he swears was at least ten to fifteen feet with no hesitation but we looked back afterwards and realised that you had already run about 20ft before he'd got his shoes off...HOW DID YOU DO THAT?...how did you know and react so quickly?" If i'm honest i couldn't answer her but i do remember her and her husband shaking hands with me in the lift and his face seemed like he was still questioning. The worst part was though, that for six months after in seven separate dreams...THAT LITTLE GIRL DIDN'T SURFACE..and i woke up in sweats without her in my arms to the shrill noise of those same screams. I bet you can read stacks into that Jordan...and then some.

I struggle with over analyzing and recently in my life I’ve began trying to delve deeper into why I am the way I am. One of the things thats become apparent to me is that I tend to over-analyze even the most minor occurrences that happen in my everyday life, I’m very observant and because of these two things, nothing ever is as it appears in my life. In my consciousness I’m constantly arguing with myself over what everything means. For example, if I detect even a tiny bit of negativity someone has towards me, I immediately start thinking of all the possible reasons this could be, and it makes me think back to our previous interactions and I try to form a web in my mind to explain how all those interactions led to that miniscule negativity. It has helped me a lot in life, but recently I’ve began to notice it also has a lot of negative effects as I get defensive over the smallest things and mentally prepare for the worst case scenario, even when I’m almost certain there is nothing wrong. It’s a blessing to always be prepared for the worst, but it’s a curse that it affects my interactions with people and in my head I’m fighting off my own thoughts trying to protect me from the potentially bad scenario.

That's basically what I've become... I replaced a very self destructive habit with a literature junky habit. I read constantly, anything I can get my hands on but preferably classical literature, ancient Greek, Latin and Hebrew (translated ofc). I've been clean 6 years this October because I did what Jordan lays out in this video. I did it accidentally though. I hated the idea of AA or NA or any "religious" program to maintain. No, I had to prove to myself I had the strength inherent in me. The only thing I didn't do is large breakfasts... Always hate breakfast, usually eat yogurt. My diet isn't on point though, I'm about 20lbs overweight, have been ever since I got clean. Time to turn up the notch and start actually working out hard. Need to push myself as hard physically as I have mentally.
