Jordan Peterson: "Any Regrets?"

I ask Dr. Jordan Person about his mainstream media interviews where he felt under attacked and if he has any regrets about how he spoke or behaved during them? Does he ever see value in his opponents views and is here a middle ground? He answers passionately here about the importance and necessity of free speech and its role in our individual lives and society at large.

Of the thousands of books I’ve read and hundreds of people I’ve listened to, when I’m asked to recommend just one body of work to help one understand and conquer life, it’s Dr. Peterson library of lectures, podcasts and books. If opponents would just shut up, abandon their ideologies long enough to listen and reflect deeply, they would surely find wisdom to live by.

The parallel observation is that they're both well liked by the same people despite being so different as people. Why? Because they share a common set of underlying beliefs & principles that guide their behavior - even in the fantastically different ways that each expresses himself. And that common ground & philosophical guide set is common with many people.

@@BuJammy um...claiming you went 25 days without sleep is not a belief. It's just a lie, plain and simple. So is his ghost story. None of what he described ever happened. His claim to fame was his lunatic rant against the C-16 bill, which, as many have explained at exhaustive length, was just a sleazy collection of lies from top to bottom. He's spread outlandish climate-denial lies and lunacies based on fellow con artists Denis Prager and Bjorn Lomborg. Lately, he's taken up the cause of the anti-vax psychotics. He plainly feels obliged to do this because he has been viciously attacked by his own loony cult for getting vaccinated, so now, when Canada's Prime Minister, in the midst of a covid surge, politely encourages people to get vaccinated, Peterson responds with a vulgar and psychotic rant. Trudeau: "If you’re taking care of some last-minute Christmas shopping this week, here’s something else you can add to your list: a booster. If you’re eligible for one but haven’t gotten it yet, please, do so now. And if you don’t have your first or second dose, now’s the time to get it." Peterson: "Up yours @JustinTrudeau. Seriously. He's off by over 400 million years and everything he says about evolution, physiology and neuroscience is nonsense. Makes absurd, nonsensical statements about the Copenhagen Interpretation of quantum mechanics, which he misattributes to the American physicist John Wheeler rather than the Danish physicist Niels Bohr, which is the whole reason its referred to as the Copenhagen Interpretation not the New Jersey interpretation (after Wheeler who worked at Princeton). Claims he had a deep religious experience "listening to Mozart's 4th Symphony--the JUPITER symphony!" Pretty moving account save for the fact that the Jupiter is Mozart's 41st Symphony not his 4th. I completely agree AND must say that my opinion of Russell becomes more favorable with each exposure. There was a time when I found him arrogant and disappointing. For years now, I’m increasingly surprised by his character. I just listened to Jordan but watched him intently enough that I noticed my focus. I’m over 50 now and I’ve always been extremely talkative. For decades, I’ve admired those who patiently listen. When they do speak, they’ve been paying attention and organizing thoughts and often withholding comments which aren’t necessarily helpful. People will often listen more carefully when they do speak. Russell has no problem speaking but when (this is one of my major complaints with the political talk shows) the guest is an expert that you’ve asked to join you? They often know the most significant questions and territory to cover, so delegating authority with the task is often a wise call by the host. Let ‘em roll. And Russell just nailed it. A little facial expression is priceless and the respect shown to the guest is admirable. As for Jordan? I’ve listened to over a hundred hours, including the ten hours he debated Sam Harris. Ask him whatever you want. He doesn’t care for malicious intent, but Russell doesn’t, either. Two quality individuals, man. I don’t always agree, but no individual is a litmus test. Sooner or later, we all disagree. It’s incredibly important for us to allow each other the right to be wrong. I’m wondering how he’s assessing his recovery from the paradoxical reaction upon cessation of Klonipin. I’ve been taking it for 29 years and am about to start tapering. I’m pretty scared to find out how much neurological damage occurred, but seeing how he’s been improving this past year is heartening.

I find his words are typically thoughtful and that he’s put the time and effort to think through many issues from a psychological perspective. Its much easier to rally around that then what seems to be dismissive types of people who seem to be more concerned about being right than being honest. It’s utterly vital and so it follows, that free speech is vital, regardless of offence because maybe somewhere in the honesty of discussion, we might be able to form a different view!!! It is not healthy to suppress or repress ones self or another!!! However, one must always be willing to have their view challenged!!!

I suppressed everything, became a recluse at 12 and was nearly a selective mute well into my late 20's and have paid a serious price for it. I've had many years of therapy since with little success. I'm still grateful I've survived the journey this far regardless how painful it's been. I've had to learn to adapt to a single life. My social skills are very poor but I've learned to enjoy a physically, adventurous life as long as I maintain living in the present. I make sure to always be availed an exit to prevent a calamity. That's not free speech though. You are talking about a safe space for talking about your everything without judgement. A civil society paradoxically needs limitations. You can offend whoever you like but in e.g. a workplace environment where power dynamics come into play, there will be rules and limitations on conduct. Whistleblower services are provided just so workers can anonymously express certain concerns without facing direct repercussions. Regardless what anyone wants, speech has consequences and activism should be weighed as a cost-benefit issue. I'm not trying to change minds but one should be aware of the cost of expressing one's views.

I think Jordan Peterson always does the absolute best he can and his motivation comes from compassion and he truly is trying to improve people's lives. He has no malice and seems genuinely upset to learn that someone may have been hurt by something he said. Sometimes I think his education may interfere with a broad perspective and there are areas I would consider him a bit narrow minded, but the thing that makes him great is that he is open to discussion that may change his mind or offer a new perspective. In fact, I would say that he actively challenges his own beliefs and is always looking to discover ways that he may be narrow minded. He is a man who continually strives to improve himself and that is something to admire and find inspiring. Also, it is what I admire admire about you Russell.♥️

@Wise Acres To explain things so simply that a child can understand them is a very good thing to do, if you can do it. When people use unnecessarily complex language or unnecessarily obscure references, it does raise flags that they might not really know what they are talking about and that they might be trying to impress rather than enlighten. I don't think that is always the case, but I think it often is, and it might be the case here. It is certainly something to look out for. On the other hand, the legend of Oedipus and the psychoanalytical theories of Sigmund Freud that referred to that legend are part of the shared culture of the West. It is useful to have shared cultural references that people can refer to and build on. If you are unfamiliar with them, then it's not a big problem, because you can always read up about them until you have a better idea of what they are about. It is always good to learn. And if you learn enough so that you can catch Jordan Peterson out on some point he is trying to make, then so much the better!

Dr. Jordan Peterson has made false comments like: “There wouldn't be any art & poetry without religion.”, and “Atheists who don't rape/kill are religious without knowing it.”. He also refused to admit (when asked by Sam Harris) that the OT has some horrible verses. Dr. Jordan Peterson knows lobsters & humans had a common ancestor some 350 mil yrs ago, so he knows there were no Adam & Eve, but he is intentionally being intellectually dishonest by promoting Adam & Eve and Jesus bs stories just to monetize the gullible emotional religious fools. Dr. Jordan Peterson admits he does not like to be asked if God exists or not because he would lose the incoming donations from the gullible emotional religious fools if he were to be intellectually honest and admit that he does not know the answer. Dr. Jordan Peterson deserves an academy award for pretending to be emotional and crying while talking about Jesus. Dr. Jordan Peterson admits to Joe Rogan that he has found a way to monetize the SJW. The amount of donations from gullible emotional religious fools is a whole a lot more. Dr. Jordan Peterson knows humans & lobsters had a common ancestor, yet he is promoting Adam & Eve bs stories to monetize the gullible emotional religious fools. The only reason someone who knows evolution is a fact yet refuses to admit that there was no literal Adam & Eve is because of the huge amount of incoming donations from the gullible emotional religious fools. That's not illegal but it is intellectually dishonest. The only reason someone who knows nobody knows if there is a God or not yet refuses to admit it when asked if God exists or not is because of the huge amount of incoming donations from the gullible emotional religious fools. That's not illegal but it is intellectually dishonest.

@@AtamMardes You repeated basically the same paragraph 4 times. Living in the western society, chances are your country used to be religious but is not many more. God probably doesnt exist and so what? Life is easier if you believe in god. Religion also is a way for people to come together nowadays there is only divide. Nowadays I can see the church and religion for what it is and I cant believe. But you got to believe in something. People used to have meaning in religion now you have to find your own meaning so life is harder. Some people can live without meaning but those are just individuals caught up in nihilism that dont really give the bigger picture of their life a thought, they just live day to day. When it comes to morals we often develop them largely based on societal norms and laws. Eg. In arab countries they see it as morally correct to throw stones at women for little reasons. In most of the world it is normal to eat beef, and in India it is unacceptable. Societal norms and laws were interconnected with religion hundreds of years ago and we still have some laws from back then now so... So you see moral of the story is morales are less yours than you think and very largely based on the culture you grew up in.

Reading 12 Rules for Life currently and #11 explores this point in great detail. How the virtues of compassion, empathy and agreeableness can slide, when in excess, into passive compliance with the worst vices. Jordan Peterson is a man who understands things on a much different level than most of us. Like he said compassion has it’s merits but to place compassion as an all powerful standard will hold us back. Like he said “to be free you have to take the risk of offending someone“. Being someone who came to hurt someone else should never be glorified and we should make sure they know we find no positivity in an action that is specifically designed to hurt or antagonize someone. But we cannot face laws on peoples feelings if it means taking away freedoms that allow us to evolve.

I have really come to appreciate and value what Jordan Peterson has to say . I am a recovering Democrat activist and listening to what he has had to say these last few years has contributed to my spiritual growth and help me overcome my knee jerk bias' from the propaganda I formerly bought into . I became a Democrat activist in response to George W Bush and became soooo disappointed and disillusioned to find out our 2 party system as it stands in the U.S. is merely 2 sides of the same corrupt evil coin and people are beating each other up over which side is "tails" . Of course programming is hard to overcome and since JP had been branded a "conservative" I was suspect of him at first but the resounding , irrefutable truth he speaks has made me a real admirer and I feel he represents the honesty and integrity that higher learning institutions used to stand for but no longer as I have seen in my life's journey that no institution or governing body is un-infiltratable or incorruptable except for an individual human soul and spirit as in Jordan Peterson's case . May he live long and loudly as we (Humanity) need his voice more than ever !

That was beautifully written and I just wanted to commend you on being so self reflective and honest as well and being open minded to things you previously has biases on. I myself have been doing some political transition but actually from the right side. I think we all need to take a deep look inside ourselves and really take an inventory of where our views are biased and really understand we are not always right and don’t know everything. I think individual humility is a pretty good answer to the crazy division we’re seeing and I think Jordan is so good at being humble yet intelligent and it attracts us because it’s admirable

@@matthewmaybrier5887 100%. We will not as a nation survive if we do not seek to genuinely understand each other. We aren't bound to agree with (the ideas) being presented, but treating (the person) with respect & dignity will serve tremendously in healing political division. No one wants to work with someone who they believe is an enemy--instead we must show that we are capable of love, humility, and genuine respect. We need trust for honest discussion/growth to take place: otherwise we're talking to a brick wall. If we go into discussions with the intent of working together to find a solution (and not treating the other person as an enemy), we are so much more productive! I'm also someone who (tends) to lean toward the right. I'm trying to learn how to actively listen, as well as remind myself that I do not understand the full picture. There's always room to grow in perspective. Jordan Peterson is an excellent example of how someone is able to simultaneously learn while being respectful to the people he has discussions with. The humility/respect combination is key, and why I really enjoy listening to his discussions.

I feel you bro, it's been crazy. I was raised a progressive liberal atheist and I thought myself superior to all religious people and conservatives. Eventually I became disillusioned, became a nihilistic trumper for the meme, and became tribalistic against left wingers. When I heard of JP I liked that he was standing up to who we now call the woke, but when I started actually going through his lectures he snapped me out of my tribalistic fervor and laid all of my bullshit out in front of me piece by piece. Now I finally realize that both sides are actually right about the other side being a dangerous hurricane of shit. No more tribes, the only thing I care about is the truth and staying true to the liberal (philosophy, not party) values that western democracies were founded on. Nobody is going to use their pet boogeyman to scare me into supporting the creation of ever greater power structures begging to be corrupted and co-opted. It's fascinating (in a very frustrating way) how difficult it still is to keep myself from being swept up though.

Hi Russell. I love Jordan Peterson. Thanx for inviting him. I know the feeling when he discribes the feeling in the room when you come in and feel the atmosphere. I love Jordan for keeping his cool. He really is honest and nobel and humble. Always learning and admitting we are human and make mistakes but make the most of it. He know the understanding that we are all part of this big machine..all of is.! Everybody has his own little task to do. When one scewes up...we are all fuked .sort of thing...within the machine... moving forward! I think we need to combine our tasks To make sure the machine keeps on working . I always learn something from Professor Jordan Peterson. Thanx again.🇵🇾both of you.

I love Professor Peterson. He is articulate in his style which makes the truth about things clear and concise, and intelligent, and meaningful way. He has helped me make sense of this confusing time in which we live. I think he is vital to maintain sanity when nothing makes sense. You get me to thinking, and you, like JP, have brought me to have personal revelations I don’t think I would have had if I had not listened to you both. So, thank you much.
