Jordan B Peterson - Elon Musk's Roommate
One of the things you see happening with really successful people is they actually don't get a lot happier as they climb the social ladder, because the people they compare themselves to change.

So I focus on the 4 most important things first. Food, shelter, sleep, and excersize. When I get those thing's done I'll be able to work on specific things.

My father told me the same when I was a teenager "You're going to be like the 5 people you hang out with the most." Rebellious and dumb, I chose to hang out with my 5 "best friends" then - not what my dad meant. "In a moment of clarity," one day I walked out of a bar my friends hung out in and walked into the Military Recruiting station across the street. I joined the US Navy. 10 weeks later I got out of Bootcamp and 2 of my best "friends" were in jail for robbery. 6 months later when I got out of A School, another friend had been shot and killed. At the end of my 4 years of duty, 2 of my "best friends" then were dead, and the other 3 were in prison. I am a happy 65 years old now, and am VERY glad I listened to my father.

so much of it is environment, opportunity, right place / right time.. once you get one thing going the rest just kind of start falling in place as well. like how it's really tough to go from $3,000 to $100,00, but it's not nearly as tough from 100k to 200k and then 200k to 500k, so on and so on. at lower levels you have to pass on so many things because you simply don't have the resources.

Jordan Peterson's "claim to fame" was the canadian bill where he completely misunderstood the entire legal situation and got publicity off the back of it and continued to for a couple of years.

Yes people. We know Elon Musk didn't invent the EV. Jordan Peterson was merely trying to provide examples as to why Elon Musk is an extraordinary person (Elon did not invent the EV, but he did revolutionize it, and was the first person to mass produce them and build an infrastructure for charging them), so as to make a point. He made a slight error, but it is irrelevant because we still understood his point.

Oh my God, I can't believe the comment section. Everyone left the point Jordan Peterson was trying to make and arguing about whether or not Musk invented electric cars. Even if that fact was corrected that Musk was not the inventor, the point he was trying to make is that this friend of his who is super genius/Ceo in the tech world still feels inferior to Elon. He still compares himself to someone he feels has achieved much more. This guy mentioned would be considered a genius, hard worker and innovator by millions who probably look up to him having created 2500 business (no small feat) yet he still feels inadequate when names like Elon's are called out.

I think Jordan was also being sarcastic. He continued to use the word “impossible”. In reality, what Elon did wasn’t impossible, or “super hard”**, he just was the first one to do it all so well with continual success. His use of impossible was to show how that’s how our brain sees it when we compare. It’s impossible to US, but not Elon, why? Because we aren’t good enough or x, y, z, and whatever we can come up to say. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mean to use not super hard in a bad way, because it’s pretty insane what elon has done

The most interesting and valuable thing about Jordan's talks is that he is probably the only person who voices extremely RAW and REAL human dynamics that society deems unpopular or depressing. Like he would tell you that no matter what you are doing, you cant FAKE IT till you MAKE IT on your serotonin level. It knows VERY WELL where your position in the social hierarchy lays, think about how extremely profoundly intelligent the human mind and sub-conscious is, then you would understand how it's impossible to fool it to a FULL EXTENT - You may do certain immediate physical actions that will trigger serotonin production, but that will be limited to a temporary dose that is equal to the physical effort outputed then will go back to its baseline.. And your baseline is where you lay in the social hierachy that your mind at all times KNOW and TRACKS - Just this natural phenomoma itself would never be voiced by most motivational people and popular media. It is actually more conducive and valuable to learn the reality of our anatomy and psyche than to fake it - If you know how it really works then you can start to put in the RIGHT EFFETCTIVE work to counter it and make it work in a healthy way - Meaning: Find a way to realistically get higher on the hierachy - Invest in a niche education to be a master of a specific field and get really good at it and stand out, make money from it and carve a space out for yourself as a specialist. This will be a reality that your sertonin system cannot ignore and will produce the right amount to keep you emotionally stable.

The thought of possibility of things getting better never crossed my mind at that stage. I have at many times in my life contemplated living outside of this hierarchical diagram altogether but Im constantly and immediately shoved back into it and I don't resent that -- which has been at times very very hard to deal with but at other times really really pleasant and normal. I do naturally enjoy time alone and I have found it to be in earnest, one of the greatest aspects of my life. Some people say this might mean that I am a introvert. Others tried to describe it as an honestly: mentally deficient attitude and way of life. I can't honestly put a pin on it myself so, I naturally look to others to do or allow this to happen. It is an interesting way of life that I lead but I have never been happier and I hope that people can come to accept different ways of life as well.

this raises questions in terms of students, one important thing is as we r growing, so will our friends circle, because we have to surround ourselves with those who we aspire to be, to learn from them. This automatically puts us in a lower "position" in our "hierarchy". So we are going to constantly be on guard. Ig its important to have a set or true friends who we genuinely love and respect. A group that doesn't have any hierarchy be we genuinely care about each other, and then switch to the hierarchical group that we try to climb, keeping the fire alive so to say.

Such cool deep knowledge, yet of course, these are generalisations that tend to work. Good to know, useful, yet I found that after some reprogramming of myself and my default mode, those don't really apply anymore. Hierarchy is there, but largely in the background. Living here and dropping the dramatic game that anything wrong can ever happen helps to drop the anxiety and constant fighting, which used to make life a drag for me. Much recommended, anyway. A lot more fun for me at least.

HOW do you even begin to address and work on your emotional stability, even with this understanding that serotonin tracks your position in a social hierarchy? Maybe by identifying the hierarchy your working in? Identifying who you're comparing yourself to?

That's a tough medicine to swallow. If you surround yourself with overachievers, you are more likely to be an over-achiever yourself. But your first instinct will be to compare yourself to your closest group, and you will always feel like a loser unless you overcome your basic instinct and and compare yourself against your younger self and you keep growing skills you care about. Controlling your instincts is very challenging and growth mindset is hard to sustain as your body and mind gets older. If you choose the other path and surround yourself with people who are less accomplished than yourself so that you feel good about your accomplishments today, then you will miss your north star and you will end up becoming an under-achiever. You will feel terrible as you look back at your life many years later. Pursuit of happiness seems to be a moot point but yet so desirable.

You could literally develop a chemical imbalance and in the long run even die because of starvation or sleep deprivation when you're going through rough times in your life. Always make sure your sleep well, eat well and preferably exercise at least once a day. It could literally stop you from dying. Don't underestimate your mental well being. Just stop comparing yourself to other people, No wonder so many people are depressed. Every one is different and want different things, if you want to compare yourself with someone compare yourself to your past self. Decide how you want your future self to be and work to get there, constantly tracking your progress and changing the trajectory. There is no way you can stay depressed while employing this method. Bad days should not discourage you because even on the bad day you are much better then you were a year ago. Take on difficult tasks learn new skills. Grow to escape feeling of inferiority and helplessness and never ever compare yourself to others. It will lead to either feeling inferior or superior both are terrible you should view yourself as having the same worth as anyone else you know.

"Stop comparing yourself to people" is the equivalent of saying "Stop being fluid" to water. It's unconscious, it's built in. You can try your best to minimize it but it still kicks in anyway and changes how you feel about your position in life without your control. JP explained in the video why that happens but I hoped he would offer some practical advice to dealing with that fact.
