Both accomplished tennis players, we experimented with our paddles where we glued a ping pong rubber on one side. The level of play increased 100% as did the the spectate-ability of play!

Agree that the criteria should be updated. Also, why aren't Refs using that "gadget" instead of their hands to check paddles? Then there is the calibration of the "meter" to make sure it's accurate.

Refs aren’t even calling out balls. I would never want them to have paddle testers. Plus it would be really expensive to outfit every court with one.

Wouldn't it be a lot eiser if they just droped the Paddle smoothness requirement? Paddles can only get a limited amount of roughness anyway right?? If a Paddle is too rough wouldn't the ball just stick to the Paddle.

Interesting that the tester is wearing a shirt with USAP logo on it

I had to go back and listen.. you’re right, that’s interesting. Sounds like that is the USAP Officials daughter and maybe she is dating/married to one of those guys who are friends. Maybe her Dad let this one slide as he knows them..idk 🤔

The tester is Donn Paben. Donn is the managing director of equipment compliance for USA pickleball. He is the sole person responsible for approving and de-listing paddles for USA pickleball.

USAPA wants to become an Olympic sport (like ping pong & tennis), but their equipment rules keep dumbing it down to prevent this from happening...

True. Although with how rapidly this sport is growing, I believe at some point USAPA can get to the olympics. Primarily world class pickleball is also US National level as well. The sport needs to continue to grow in other countries

after watching this official in an interview on another video, he is trying to cover his tracks for saying the paddle of his #1 player was also illegal.....it's turning into a money game now...who pays this guy's salary and who is getting his palm greased to pass certain models

JoolaGate My question is: Who tested the submitted paddles for OFFICIAL testing and how did they pass? Maybe they changed the (Number) required to pass midstream. Those details are needed.

Big Mystery! Joola is a big multimillion dollar company coming from the table tennis world seeing opportunity in the pickle ball world and CRBN is a very small family-like owned company being crushed right now 🤔

Yep Big or small company, CRBN needs to take responsibility. USAP did nothing wrong. The question is if other paddles of other brands would potentially fail as well.

I'm not buying any carbon face paddle til this dies down... Even Electrum!

Yes. He is the "Compliance Expert" for the USPA. He has no prior experience in this area. In the interview he did for The Kitchen on the CRBN ban he said that he does six tests on a paddle to get an average. The Starrett roughness tester he is using is the standard for highly precise testing in the machining industry. You do not need to do six separate tests. Especially on a paddle that has a rough carbon face. You'll never get the same reading twice. The USPA testing is a joke.

Joola CFS is just as over spec as the CRBN. I have played with both. They are both equally ridiculous in their ability to spin. Other paddles do not come close. This test seems accurate to me.

go watch a video by Pickleball Studio from last year! They evaluated 15 paddles for spin rate and based on their results 2 brothers of equal proficiency had spin rates so dramatically different because of the way they swing a paddle SPIN RATE is in the hands of the user and shouldn't even be a consideration for paddles!

Bullshit. I hit with as much or more spin with the legal engage pursuit 6.0. A better paddle over Joola in my opinion.

Lol. The Engage MX Pursuit 6.0 is legal and spins the ball more than those carbon paddles. I hit huge dipping topspin forehands and backhands. And regularly hit topspin lobs that people try to run down but can't because the ball hits and runs away from them. But I am a pro player and it's mostly the ability of the user to be honest.

Can’t drop the requirements. That’s not fair to all the companies and paddles that have been following the rules. It’s up to you CRBN and Joola to figure it out. Rules were in place before they produced their paddles. It’s on them, not USAP. Making CRBN the victim is a joke. This is a quality control issue that they need to figure out.

this is all a load of POO!! I can take any paddle yes any paddle give it to 10 players of the same rating and get 10 different spin rates! this entire spin rate fiasco is ridiculous!

I am concerned that the title and description of this video are deceptive. According to Donn himself ( kzread.info/dash/bejne/e32htLuEYreyp6w.html ), this is NOT a "failed test" but only a single reading (and that isn't even a true reading) and it means nothing at all since 6 readings are necessary to be averaged on both sides of the paddle.

Hey buddy, this video came out after mine. Before hand all we knew is what Donn said in the leaked video “Yeah, these are not going to pass” - Referring to the Joola paddles he was testing. ..Looks like Donn is trying to clear the air and set a few facts straight in the video you linked. I’m also wondering how much of his own ass he is trying to cover (for any reason) being that he was caught on video unofficially testing the new Joola paddles..or maybe he isn’t bothered by it. Idk

He's making up his own rules. The Starrett roughness tester is a highly precise instrument. There is no need to do six tests. If you do enough tests I guess you'll get the predetermined answer your looking for!

One thing I have learned from this, is that there are a bunch of cry babies in this sport..The "Im not buying the paddle till this is settled" crowd are laughable.

Many of the young players think nothing of letting the technology take over the game. If you had the historical perspective from other sports on how tech can ruin play, you'd understand how important it is to stop it now. Tennis, table tennis and golf are all great examples of being ruined, i.e. no net play, ludicrous spin and whole courses being obsolete. The beauty of pball is people of all ages can play together and it is more about technique than technology. It's a good thing they've drawn a line in the sand. Personally i think every sanctioned event should test each individual paddle before starting. There are always companies and individuals willing to break the rules. Why would i want to play against someone who can match the technique I've spent years developing simply by buying a suped up paddle?

Tennis was drastically improved, not harmed, from racket/string tech. More power, spin, longer rallies. Pickleball has a low barrier to entry for newer players and could really benefit from more paddle tech.

The string technology changes brought a fundamental shift in play to tennis. Seve and volley and the net game have been virtually eliminated. If you think this is a good thing then you obviously cant and never were able to do them. The game was always best with some contrasting styles and a mixed variety during the points. Think sampras/young federer vs agassi or borg vs mcenroe. Great stuff. Now it is just long baseline rallies from everyone. If it wasnt for drop shots no one would ever be at the net. Now anologus to this in pball where the paddle friction becomes unrestricted, the drop and dink game will probably be eliminated. No matter how good your drops are people will be able to power roll over all of them. Then it becomes like modern tennis where mixed style play is eliminated

@@mikehawkins6508 Agassi relied heavily on tech (polyester strings) for his playstyle. Before racket tech everybody was just playing serve and volley and there was no variety. Nadal played with tons of spin vs someone like Federer who plays more flat and approaches the net more. You could say the game is different but to claim it had more variety just isn't true. Im guessing you're probably a bit older in age and so you have a certain nostalgia for a more classic way of playing. Thats no problem, you're absolutely entitled to your preferences. But racket and paddle tech absolutely adds more dimensions to the game which increases the skill gap. Pickleball could benefit from that added gap than just about any other sport. Dinking will not disappear, it just won't be the only viable strategy anymore. Thats a good thing

Yep, I was a professional tennis player and polyester strings let you smash the ball and it stays in and puts an incredible amount of spin on the ball. I started using poly luxillon string around 2005 could not believe the difference. And it lasts way longer before it breaks.
