When I see Jonny Kim and his story, I almost want to cry. Being an Asian kid living in Australia, I grew up in similar conditions though not as extreme as his case with his dad. My own dad suffered his own share of mental issues which caused a lot of hardship in our family, but we always worked through it. Until he died of a preventable organ failure in December of 2018. Now that I'm 15, I have always been in this limbo of what I should be. What I should strive to be, ever since my father's death. I convinced myself that I coped with his loss, yet that feeling of emptiness never subsided. He will never see me grow up. Get my first job. Graduate High School. Get into a career that he would respect. See the grandchildren that he had wanted to have. And ultimately, the continued health and wellbeing of me, my brother and my mum. Now that I'm aspiring to become a professional Surgeon within the Army, Jonny's struggles and success motivates me to attempt to achieve the same level of what he had did. Thank you, Jonny Kim, for sharing your story. When I am older, I will also share mine.

I think it’s very hard for others to understand the difficulty of telling the people who’ve abused you that you love them. I once told a therapist that my ultimate goal in life was to be able to say those words. The thing that finally clicked for me was a new understanding of the concept of forgiveness. Forgiveness isn’t a one time decision. It’s a choice that you make every day and a choice you make every time that you say you love someone. I’m incredibly impressed by this man’s accomplishments, but it’s clear to me that Jonny’s hardest achievement was the forgiveness of his father and the ability to say that he loves his father. He chooses forgiveness rather than anger or hatred or vengeance. That part is what I found truly motivational.

I’m kinda envy him. Because just like him, I grew up in domestic violence too, the only difference, is my father don’t have a gun, no police intervention and, he is still very much alive till this day. I aspire to be doctor, scientist and many more, to change the world and my own fate. But I had to first spent years of efforts and money to overcome depression and childhood trauma. But just when I finally recovered, and feel like I’m ready to take off, I had to look after my ailing mother. Life keep giving me endless stuff to overcome. Not sure if I ever get to achieve my dream. Anyway, it’s a relief to know that someone else who share similar experiences did succeeded

And now I am 36 with wife and two years old baby. I am not completely am at where I want to be. But at least now I know better than to beg for other's validation on me to prove I am not worthless. This left me in tears. I had written (still working on the script) about a fictional character (male teen) who also has deep, emotional challenges with his father because of similar circumstances to the ones described here (physically abusive father). I felt I was hearing my character speak. 👀 This is motivating me to work more on my story. This is deeply inspirational! He is a spiritual warrior & light worker. 💪🏻
