Ah! I was living in NYC Heard she was appearing at Forest Hills Tennis Stadium 04/1979...Just had to go. Grabbed my date and took the train. What talent that night: Joni, Pat, Paco.... The girl I took has been my wife for 38 years now. If I had to put a musical score to our lives...it would be Joni Mitchell and Pat Metheny....even out grandkids are hooked:)

I've played guitar for almost 40 years, and while I always loved the bass and filled in occasionally on songs with the most basic bass parts, it was Jaco Pastorius' playing that made me want to really learn the instrument. He was such an immense talent. It's a shame his life was cut short at such a young age. I wonder what masterpieces he might have created if his mental illness and drug addiction hadn't got the better of him. But I'm also grateful that he gave us so much incredible music in his 35 years. Hard to believe it's been almost 34 years since his death. RIP Jaco.

@@Laayon19 Yeah, it's amazing how natural talent works. I was blessed with a natural talent for stringing words together and have made my living as a writer for the last 30 years. I love what I do, but I'd give it up in an instant to have even a fraction of the raw talent of a guitarist like Hendrix or Garcia or Beck. Learning guitar, bass and piano has always been a struggle for me -- none of it came easy -- and even with all the thousands of hours I've put in, I will never be more than just OK at it. But as frustrating as it is sometimes, the ride has always been fun. That's music for ya.

@@RMR1 yea I know exactly what you mean. I've been playing for around 30 years and only 2 years ago did I start to understand music. I’m stating the obvious but this is such an incredible display of live musicianship that it melts your heart. On a technical note for all you musicians, as much as I’ve listened to and watched this performance I still can’t tell where Jaco’s harmonics begin and Pat Metheny’s end and vice versa. Can you? Musically it reminds me of the track ‘Milestones’ on the Miles Davis album by the same name. The bookend solos from Cannonball Adderley and John Coltrane are so seamless and connected they sound like one continuous person even though they’re playing two different instruments with different pitches. As with Jaco and Pat as well as Don, Lyle and Michael on the other tracks, particularly ‘Hejira’, the interplay is magic.

I enjoyed the coyote versus mouse footage. I have all the Joni and Jaco albums. Watching a big predator fail at killing a tiny prey is somehow conveyed in this song. That's what it's for... Intellectual difficulty, smart defeat, I'm way bigger and badder than you but I have to stand and fight, wrestling with my ego, and sometimes I lose that fight. I miss you Jaco.

Oh man, I absolutely love this song! It just to me, represents absolute perfection. The fusing of her vocal style which is so unique and you got Jaco in the background improvising, Alex Acuna on kit drums, Pat Methany (not one of my favs, appreciate him but...) this is a Shadows and Light which was just a killer album. Here's a Joe Strom fact, he bought a ticket to this show and walked right in! Can you imagine that? Just rolling up to the Greek Theater, buying one ticket which must have been harder than hell to find enrolling in and watching this phenomenal show! Only gel right! ❤🎶 So while I'm kind of of freaked out about coyotes, honestly I can't hold it against an animal for their nature you know? He's just doing what they do and it's just really sad that coyote got our friends cat. Thank you for sending the Joni my way though. She's up there in like the top 3, def the top five. Right up there with weather report BB King Django Reinhardt Etc.

Rhythm is in the head. Great players play around it while feeling it, not forcing, timing both loose and tight. Jaco is so great because he plays freeflow. When players play too many syncopations, like a lot of jazz players do it quickly starts to bother me. With Jaco it just adds. I dont even like fretless bass that much but boy, those melody lines bring so much character to the music. That album and the band live here is just like the pinnacle of music. Its like the top others want to reach.

Everything really came together on this tour and the albums around this time in Joni's life! It's such a body of work that it seems like a beautiful dream. I still want to thank that cat that suggested Jaco Pastorius to Joni because conventional bass playing just wouldn't do with what she was wanting musically in her mind. Ultimately a perfect collaboration! (Jaco's friends, Lyle and Pat, brought their A-game to the recipe as well.)
