Jonggan Dance Performance at Festival Indonesia in Seoul 23 June 2024

Ойын-сауық

Jonggan is a traditional dance originating from West Kalimantan, Indonesia. The name 'Jonggan' is derived from the Dayak language, meaning 'dance'. This dance first emerged in the 1950s and was initially performed as entertainment for the community during various ceremonial events, weddings, festivals, and the welcoming of important guests. Before the Jonggan dance is performed, a special ritual is conducted. This ritual is carried out to seek permission or protection from God to ensure that the performance proceeds smoothly.
The distinctive features of the Jonggan dance include its dynamic and spirited movements, traditional Dayak attire with vibrant colors, accompanying music that uses gong, drums, and sape (a traditional Dayak stringed instrument), and also its symbolism, which reflects unity and the harmonious relationship between humans and nature.
Through the Jonggan dance, we’d like to welcome the audience and honored guests into a festive atmosphere of joy and also the spirit of togetherness within the Indonesian community.
