Let’s not forget his son was 18 and married at that time and very much apart of his father’s business.. he may not have put the poison in the juice and he may not have forced everyone to drink it but he didn’t try to stop it either! Jim gave off warnings early on with his test runs to see if the people would actually commit mass suicide, as well as showing signs of psychosis, kicking members out and refusing to allow them to take their children, and on many occasions not allowing people to leave, holding them hostage against their will.. so he has to accept some responsibility as he did nothing to stop it!

If I remember, they showed it in the TV movie Guyana tragedy.

I am from Guyana and i also still live here, trust me when i say this.... Jonestown is now fully covered in bushes and dense jungle but the trail tracks are still there and as soon as you enter that region you can literally feel death, much like a horror film. The entire place feels like something is pulling you down to the ground. We did some surveying work there and had to stay overnight...I WILL NEVER EVER GO BACK TO THAT PLACE. The sounds you hear in that jungle at night....your sanity says it's animals, but your realization knows it's not. There is still the signboard at the starting point that says 'JONESTOWN' and the famous quote 'Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it'

I watched a video a few days ago of what Jonestown looks like today. It looks just as you described. As interesting as it (the video) was, I know I'd be totally creeped out if I ever went there, but with my morbid curiosity, I know I'd visit the area if I had the opportunity. I would want to plant flowers or something in honor of all who died. I was 12 when this happened (in my 50's now), and the impact I felt at that young age is still almost as strong today when I think about it or watch these youtube videos. It was an awful, awful event. God love all those people...I hope they are all resting in peace.

Im jumping in here. I was in the Army during this time. I was Graves Registration and our section was sent there to conduct body recovery. I was one of a very few that placed the bodies in bags and move them to the collection point. One night I was walking past the pavillion where most of the dead lay in the open. I saw something dancing in amoung the dead. I looked away for a second and when I looked back it was gone. The place is the devil's playground I tell ya.

I was 12 years old when that happened. I can remember the news broadcast just as vividly as if they happened yesterday.

Such a haunting audio. It's so much more eerie in this day and age of social media to just have the voices. Christine trying to negotiate their lives to go to Russia is heart breaking. And the children crying in the background is horrifying.

Jonestown suicide was 6 years before I was born at the time my fiance was two, this was just heartbreaking

My dad brought the bodies of the victims back to the states... USAF in a C-141 as a loadmaster ... so sad 😞... so damaging!

Katie Shaw An ugly,unfortunate, tragic story.With the very corrupt local government. of the PNC under Forbes Burnham due diligence was not exercised. The land was just sold to the People's Temple and the believers came and settled there.No oversight of this community was planned for and/or carried out. The congressman was poorly protected by his country's security apparatus and the local army in Guyana.

Oh my gosh! I can’t even imagine what all the victims went through. This is such a sad part of history for any human being to endure. I am just glad that the ones who survived made something out of their experience and that his children aren’t affected in a destructive way. They chose to heal instead of letting the experience change their good nature. I applaud all the survivors and hope the families of the dead are doing well.

People have not changed. Even after escaping and surviving one of the members joined yet another cult. So sad people lost their lives dealing with this evil devil.

I'm 27 years old and I'm shocked to just start finding out about this. I've never heard about this ordeal my entire life. What a shocking and frightening situation. May the victims rest in peace!

Some people defend the cults they are in, because how it makes them feel, but love without truth is deceptive.

I remember this happening when I was a senior in high school in 1978.

Still sends chills down my spine that people follow people who do things like this. It's why you don't treat people like Gods with your faith. Abuse of power.

I was born about 150 miles away from Jonestown, a year after it happened.

I remember this soooo clearly. So heinous and sad. So many, looking for love and acceptanc. A place void of racism.

Heard about this through the "crimefile" podcast today. It went very indepth from Jim Jones damaging childhood to the mass suicide/murder that ended the cult.

Jim Jones was worse than Charlie Manson ever thought about...

Yet Charles Manson is seemingly viewed as a personification of pure evil in North America, while Jones was just some crazy cult leader. Jones was much worse.

I had never heard of this story until I learned about it in the tenth grade at school. I’m surprised more people weren’t always talking about it back then that I had to learn about in school.

The range of manipulation in human beings is scary. From intimate partners to religious leaders to politicians. All just preying on the humanity of others

40 year anniversary of the Jonestown massacre will be this Sunday. My prayers go out to the families and loved ones of this terrible tragedy.

This makes me sick. My child is so precious to me how could someone? Love and acceptance does not equal fear and death.

Anyone who names a town after themselves... you know there’s something wrong.

I am from Guyana. I still live here. Me and my sister were just talking about this. So I came on KZread to see if I can find any documentary on it. Most people don't even know Guyana exist until you mention Jim Jones or Jonestown. Right now the place is just pure jungle. No one goes there to stay overnight or wants to live there.

I’m currently reading Jeff Guinn’s excellent book. Jones had some good ideas to start with, he passionately believed in equality, but megalomania and paranoia got the better of him. A tragic story.

Great book. Very well researched.

Never ever follow a man who claims to be an idol above all else, no matter how "kind" they may seem. No genuinely good person is going to claim their better than everyone else and that you should listen to them and them alone. Beware false idols... “Beware of the false prophets, who come to you dressed as sheep, but inwardly are ravenous wolves."

The people in the background completely oblivious to what they’re talking about made me chuckle

I find this whole thing incredibly sad and tragic. Jones' followers were not stupid. They were good, well meaning people who wanted a better life. They thought Jones loved them and had their best interests in mind. Sadly he did not.

He was on a lot of hard core drugs all the way up to the last day in Guyana. That’s also why hew would wear sunglasses all the time.

What I remember is the band playing Way of the World by EWF. I still hear when I hear that song. And the last audio/videotape. That chilled me to the bone. To this day. It's unnerving how this doesn't look like 914 people, tho. Just saying...not claiming a big conspiracy or anything.
