Variations of the clan or tribe theory of managing hostilities are not confined to the present time, nor to Gaza. I have heard this many times on the news over my lifetime. The problem is that the idea sells well to the public. The myth is always some super capable clan leader who is alright. All you have to do is arm his clan and pay him. Unfortunately, this seldom works out. I can't remember the name of the guy who was supposed to be able to fight the Taliban, I think, after 9/11. He was assassinated eventually. You may have noticed that when the clan story was first in the media a few weeks ago, nobody said it was a dumb idea. That was because not only the public buys the simple solution. The politicians run out of ideas, get tired, and start making mistakes. Then some advisor comes along and says to use the clans, or the tribes, or whatever organization. I think that the proxies for Iran are a part of the same phenomenon. They deflect responsibility and culpability from the puppetmasters; they die somewhere else; and they get a life of their own. In Gaza, Hamas will always be the biggest clan, probably even after they are destroyed. Young men, indoctrinated and brainwashed, join the team for many reasons; but they often die before their brains are fully formed into adulthood where they can learn to discriminate, probably between the ages of 25 and 30. Nutrition may play a role in their brains ever developing to maturity. One sign of this is the willingness to die for a ridiculous lie. The older ones never want to be the martyrs. The want to grow rich, powerful, and fat.
