Jonathan Groff and Lea Michele on the documentary Spring Awakening: Those You've Known

GLAAD's Anthony Allen Ramos chats with Jonathan Groff and Lea Michele in an emotional interview about the upcoming documentary "Spring Awakening: Those You've Known" which follows the two actors reuniting with the original cast and crew for a one-night-only reunion concert. Groff talks to Ramos about finding himself during the show's original run and feeling inspired to be himself and come out shortly after the show's original run ended. Michele talks about originally falling in love with Groff and then becoming an ally for him as he navigated his identity and sexuality. Both actors talk about becoming best friends after appearing in the original run of "Spring Awakening" and share a wild story from back in the day when they were much younger and growing up. "Spring Awakening: Those You've Known" premieres May 3 on HBO and HBO Max.

My daughter was involved in theater since she was 10. She met her very best friend the same way. She had a crush on him and realized it wasn't going to happen. He became her soul mate. She was there for him as he struggled with who he truly was but never pushed him to come out. They remained soul mates for 21 years until she died suddenly 3 years ago from a seizure. He was devastated, as we all still are. Lea is so right, there is something so safe about having someone love you and know you at your best and your worst. Can't wait to see the documentary.

Groff seems like an amazing friend, and Lea truly seems at ease with him. Glad to see they cherish that, and admit they work at maintaining their friendship. Good interview 😊

So inspiring to see how these two great performers channel their mutual love for each other into their love for the young artists to follow them. And yes, okay, fine. Made me cry again for sheer loving joy. A miracle they can get this cranky old heart to beat with them.

So in love with what they have. And jealous honestly. I want to find someone like this in my life. Jonathan is one of my favorite performers and I’ve had the pleasure of meeting him, and I live in Lancaster where he grew up and have many connections to him and his family. The sweetest people. Known them forever they are such great friends. I can only hope I can get to know Jonathan even better through the years and I know it would never be like his relationship with Lea NOT EVEN CLOSE but I hope someday we can be good friends ❤️

They really are 'soul mates'.....it's not necessarily about who you mate with or pair off with, but rather supporting, mirroring, and holding safe space to become one's true self.
