The real tasteless thing here is that some audience today are unable to treat good humor with equally good humor, and instead demand a dead, rigid, never-changing sense of "respect" from real artists who know their gigs and can play around with them as they wish, and claim their own stubborn and stiff "taste" high above everything and everyone else. The radical "fundamentalists" of classical music. I've met those kind of people in in real life, and they are those that think if you enjoy classical music, you cannot listen to any other genre or it's some kind of blasphemy.

Dear me! I think some of the commenters on here must have had their sense of humours surgically removed. Nobody is ruining opera here, particularly not two of the best opera stars in the world today. They are just not as pretentious as some of you lot are. I am sure Offenbach would have laughed to, especially when the voices concerned were so beautiful and skilled.

Tout d'abord, Anita ne tient pas ici un supposé rôle de baryton, mais celui de la seconde voix de la Barcarolle, qui est une mezzo-soprano. Encore une entourloupe de Kauffmann. Il a une drôle de technique, dont lui seul possède le secret. Il y a bien longtemps que je remarque son goût étrange pour la tricherie vocale. Il commence à chanter le célèbre Duetto de Nadir et Zurga des Pêcheurs de Perles, par exemple, avec un timbre manifestement pâteux et glauque de baryton, et puis tout de suite après les premiers accords, hop! le voilà passant au fausset de ténor les gammes qui s'en suivent, faisant preuve d'une notoire incongruité vocale dont j'ignore quel est le sens expressif, s'il en existe. On peût être d'accord ou pas avec cette modalité; je sais bien qu'il a son public de fans qui l'aime et le trouve bien sympathique. Mais à titre personnel, j'ai été habitué dès mon bas âge à écouter, à admirer et à aimer sans réserves des gens comme André d'Arkor, Georges Thill, Benjamino Gigli, Tito Schipa, Nicolaï Gedda, Sándor Kónya, Ferruccio Tagliavini, Giuseppe di Stefano et bien d'autres, des gens qui employaient le fausset d'après les dictats des l'écoles franco-belge, italienne et viennoise selon le cas, ayant pour but de réussir une expressivité intrinsèque à certains passages.Tactique qui avait été déjà prévue et encouragée par les musiciens mêmes. Mais je n'avais jamais connu un usage si arbitraire du fausset et puis ces brusques changements de ton qui ne font qu'étourdir un public étonné de telles acrobaties vocales. Je ne voudrais vexer personne, mais je ne tiens pas précisement Kauffmann pour un idole, et cette douteuse badinerie musicale n'est pas de mon goût. Et puis la Barcarolle des Contes d'Hoffmann est trop belle, elle est trop liée aux doux et affectueux souvenirs d'enfance, pour qu'on en fasse une telle moquerie. On supporte trop déjà les défauts et l'absence de style propre aux voix de notre époque pour prétendre que de tels trocs de registres soient amusants. En tout cas si Maître Jonas a envie de chanter Cléopâtre au lieu de Sixtus dans Giulio Cesare de Häendel c'est son affaire à lui. Il peut toujours essayer entre amis. Mais je me permets de croire que le grand public mérite autre chose.

The problem more that this joke is the fact that when singing seriously they sound equally dreadful.
