I had just watched Manon Lescaut for the second time this week as I love it and then I came across this interview which is so informative and knowledgeable. Loved it.

+Joana Banyeres si, è vero ! ma temo che nel suo mestiere /quello del cantante lirico/ è molto più importante come canta... fa paura questo bassissimo livello artistico che regna nel mondo intero. i cantanti odierni parlano bene e cantano male. mi ricordo che quasi 60 anni fa i tenori cantavano con voci splendide e stavano zitti durante settimane per preservare la bellezza divina delle loro voci...

The story of Manon Lescaut is a sentimental male phantasie, this fiction has actually nothing to do with women at all. Its all about possessiveness and control, and this is called 'love', but it is also reveals the male psyche of Puccini and all the other composers, yes and also the singer, who are enthusiastic about it. I wonder, how that would have been, if a woman would have composed this opera. I like Jonas Kaufmann as an artist a lot and for sure, his sentimentality helps him to express and create this roles. But truly, less and less I can see the intelligence in this opera stories, or their interpretations. To put it in a nutshell, the meaning of sentimentality is to create artificial feelings for something, what has no base. Anyhow, I still love operas, but it is better to close the eyes for the stories.

I don't think that Manon is all that artificial a personality. She's very young, only 18, she was never in a big city, she has hardly any idea of what life is all about. At the beginning, her family has exiled her to a nunnery, perhaps because she was fooling around with the boys in the village too openly, perhaps because the family had become impoverished and could no longer afford to satisfy her expensive tastes. I agree that few really intelligent and educated women would fall for Geronte's tawdry splendor, but I fear that many young and inexperienced women do, in real life. It can't be denied that there are many sex workers; each one of them has her (or his) own valid story, and Manon has hers. If her story and all too many others are all about possessiveness and control, it's because male chauvinist society is all about possessiveness and control. In short, to my mind: "Manon Lescaut" is not "sentimental," but has great social relevance!
