Personally, I don’t care, I’d go to hear Carreras sing the phone book. Apart from abundant recordings, we cannot hear Caruso, Gigli, Björling, or Corelli live in concert, but here is one of our icon tenors brought on stage by a younger tenor of great voice and great heart, who must have been enthralled as a child to hear Carreras in his prime, now honors him and Placido Domingo with the greatest tribute of all, inviting them to share the stage. I feel sorry for those who cannot experience sentiment or nostalgia with the passage of time.

I usually take the stance that YT viewers are too opinionated, should just listen and enjoy what one enjoys, rather than debating and throwing nasty insults at one another over whether or not a soprano's vibrato is in the groove. But I guess we have to burst out once in a while and trumpet our own points of view. :) Thanks kindly also to Labroidas, I appreciate a little support now and then.

+Robert Donkers Thanks for chiming in, Robert. Yes, the tenor voice can be so fine, as long as they don't push just for loudness. Carreras is powerful but first of all a sensitive artist. There are younger tenors coming down the pike. Have you heard Javier Camarena from Mexico, now with the Met? To me, he is the next wonder among tenors. As for Carreras, he will never be too old to sing!

Estas presentaciones líricas de un grande que termina y de un grande que comienza, son anecdóticas, pintorescas y -por qué no decirlo- históricas.. Las comparaciones en estos casos , no tienen sitio. Carreras de joven a la edad de Kaufmann, era todo un divo. Kaufmann lo es en este momento. Cuando Kaufmann alcance la edad de Carreras, obviamente no va a exhibir las mismas facultades de la juventud. En el ser humano la textura de los huesos y el tono muscular cambian con la edad. La técnica queda pero no las facultades. De modo que un gran aplauso para dos grandes.

In a way it is sad to see Jose so far past his best...but - of the "3 Tenors" at their best Luciano had the great voice, Placido had great technique and Jose had a magical ability to express emotion with his singing. Forget the faded voice - just watch, listen to, and feel the song. Jose can still do it!

Carreras en su mejor momento era maravilloso, despues de la enfermedad fue un gran luchador y continuó muy digno por eso se lo quiere y respeta. Recomiendo sus momentos con M. Caballé. De Kauffman solo digo que está en su mejor momento y tiene una gran voz, pero a mi gusto está mas para ser Rigoletto que el duque de Mantua. Igual quien no quisiera cantar como ellos. Nuestros comentarios son subjetivos y se relacionan a nuestros gustos, pero deben ser sin ánimo de ofender.

People moaning about Carrera's voice it is great still. Just because he spent his prime singing strenuously and his voice suffered a little doesn't mean we should denounce him now. His voice is still great. The voice is not an accurate instrument and it is extremely delicate at the best of times.

I do not join those who think Carreras should retire. His concert fees are money for his leukemia research foundation. In addition, it is fascinating to listen to an artist over the longevity of his career, to hear the development, consider the wisdom and folly of his choices, grow with him as his learning and temperament adjust to life. This is an immense privilege, to feel as if you're on the ride of life with the artist, a gift only a few artists give us. Thank you, Maestro.

Provoca ternura ver a Carreras encanecido. He estado viendo mucho el aria de la flor con Agnes Baltsa y el ver este vídeo de repente fue como si hubiese envejecido en menos de un minuto. El timbre lo mantiene. En el caso de Kaufmann es una voz muy poderosa, oscura y selecta. Hay quiénes las aprecian, hay quiénes no las entienden y hay quiénes no les gusta. En mi caso, a veces la aprecio, a veces no la entiendo y a veces no me gusta.

(continúa la respuesta de abajo) 3. Han sido muchos los tenores que han engolado, en ocasiones o siempre. Dos famosos, Domingo y Bjoerling. Yo creo que Domingo menos de lo que dicen tantos y Bjoerling mucho menos de lo que decía Kraus. No existe el cantante perfecto y, todos, salvo MacNeil (según él mismo, y yo creo que irónicamente) han tenido que trabajar mucho para cantar y superar sus problemas. En ese sentido, como decía antes, Kaufmann es un ejemplo interesantísimo para un joven cantante de ópera, igual que Lauri Volpi, al haberse reinventado con éxito, después de pasar por problemas severos, con retirada temporal incluida. Si comprende sus casos y los aplica correctamente, estará en el camino idóneo. 4. Hace poco Domingo afirmaba que Kaufmann es un tenor extraordinario, que habría triunfado en cualquier época. Yo creo que no al nivel de los más grandes, pero sí al mismo de otros muchos de renombre. 5. Hablar del aparato fonador en público tiene sus riesgos, si tiene que profundizar. y sólo sabe el nombre del aparato, o poco más. Antes, más que ahora, se estudiaba ese tema en tratados de anatomía de cuatro tomos (el Testut, por ejemplo). Hay mucho estudioso por ahí, y puede salir trasquilado, sobre todo en una discusión con profesionales. 6. Yo, y otros muchos, hemos llegado a escuchar a muchas figuras de los 50 y 60, en directo. La misma recomendación del punto 5. 7. Una recomendación. A pesar de su extensa sabiduría, intentar cantar ópera (y aspirar a ser figura) y cantar en un coro suele ser anticipo de visita recurrente al otorrinolaringólogo (el único beneficiado, con el director de escena y el buscapleitos de Internet, de la tremenda crisis de la ópera). Hay que cantar muy bien, pero que muy bien, para sobrevivir a la experiencia prolongada de un coro y cantar luego como solista de éxito. 8. Crisis, por cierto, de cantantes...y de público, porque hay cada uno suelto por ahí pontificando, que ya...

I saw Kaufmann´s Chenier last month at London. Great sing, great character, a voice focused, the medium superb and high notes comme un spinto. The rest is widows of a time has gone. A great singer, with a true italian school.
