Jon Hopkins - Singularity (Album Review)

Музыка

Though it may have a very unconventional flow of energy, Jon Hopkins' latest studio album still brings forward the fantastic production value that made "Immunity" so great.

The track Everything Connected is everything I could ever ask for in a jon hopkins track. The basslines, melodies, rhythms...they are all perfect in every way imaginable.

Been waiting for a review of this! I love this one a lot. Definitely one of the best electronic albums in the last couple of years. Everything Connected is a straight-up masterpiece.

Great review. However, I haven't heard any reviewers comment on the aspect of JH's music that I am continually blown away by, which is his unprecedented mastery of stereo depth. I've never heard any other music that uses stereo/reverb etc. to the degree in which he constructs a three-demential space. He modulates the depth of tracks in such a cinematic and enveloping fashion that when I close my eyes, I literally see 3d spaces, shapes, and colors moving to the sound (while sober I should add). I've read that he is synesthetic and sees sound this way which is super fascinating. I am struck by the fact that obsessive technical bleep blooping with automation/tweaks/edits can create such a fluid, organic, and immersive experience. If you allow yourself to just fall into the sound, the music will truly take you somewhere else.

FYI "Everything Connected" is a song made like 8 years ago. It was originally known as "Halo" and I'd been waiting for its release. It went through a bunch of versions before finally being released on Singularity

huh didn't see this coming lol will have to actually agree on the point that I also didn't find it as inventive as Immunity, that album is still unlike anything else out there and this one wasn't quite as unique, but definitely enjoyed it a lot like you did as well

The Wonky Angle you guys are both great! I really appreciate both of your opinions and I would love some of your input on the new Spencer Brown album and/or ZHU EP. Please do another joint review soon?!?

Don't want to put MORE on your plate Landon but I'm just curious: Have you heard Spencer Brown's Illusion of Perfection yet?

Lil' fact for readers/comments: Hopkins has been using the same synth for 10+ years. Sometimes he sounds like himself but usually he's making big changes with each album.

He bought said synthesizer sometime in 1999 I believe. And that was when he was only just starting out as a small-time producer based in the UK. His experiences with knob-tweaking and patch-making in the following years ultimately led to the release of his first full-length, Opalescent.
