Jointer/Thicknesser - Scheppach HMS 1080

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I tried to run some larger stuff through a hobby jointer/planer so you could see what are the limits of these hobby machines. Hope this sets some expectations when choosing one for yourself.
Scheppach is an EU brand, but as far as I can tell, this very same machine is sold in US as Jet JJP-10BTOS 10″.

    Good review. Thanks for sharing. I bought a Ferrex planer / thicknesser from Aldi UK which is basically the Scheppach HMS860 with a different badge. It failed within a minute of first use. Motor was fine but blades were not rotating. Traced the problem quickly to a broken rubber drive belt. The warranty company, Walter in Austria, said they couldn’t fix it and gave me a refund. Looks like a simple fix but I suspect the rubber in the two belts perishes over time so owners need to be familiar with the process for replacing them.

    Yep, the belts are obviously shitty from the manufacturer. But I got a replacement and that holds to this day. The only other issue with the belt is, that there's no way to set the tension on it, so if you get even a sligthly different belt then you're out of luck (happened to me, exact model of belt, but ever slightly larger)

    Hello Marek, Thank you for sharing your experience. Like setrone (below) says, it's much better to use rollers. Theoretically this would allow you to plane and thickness very long boards without any problem. I have been doing loads of research on ALL machines of this category. They're all practically the same. I just bought this one, but a limited series- the HMS1080 Black Edition Series. Same price as the blue one- 439€ here in France. Nothing different really, except the colour. As you say, terrible problem about fence squareness, and even more so, fence flatness. It's like a helicopter blade! I'm thinking of modifying it by setting it in a mould dead horizontal, and then pouring a layer of resin to get it flat from one end to the other. I found a deal where they sold the T/P + a chip collector, also by Scheppach- the DC100 65 litres. Very powerful. It doesn't have the extra socket to start both machines at once, but hey, you can't win every time. The Scheppach 5yr + 5 guarantee makes it one of the best buys on the market. The next step up is Metabo, and Dewalt. These are in the 900/1000€ bracket (mid range). Then come the real boys- 1,500€ +++ up to 15,000. The real problem with this machine is that it's VERY noisy. But hey folks, if you're not happy you can always take out your old hand plane, sharpen it, and make some wood chips- just like the old boys (I'm a 64 year old cabinet maker). Happy woodworking. Greetings from France

    Yep, it's exactly as you say. There's a lot left to be desired, but if you don't have much space/money, there's not much to choose from, everything has the same construction (I suspect they're all made in the same Chinese OEM factory).

    @@MarekVacek Hello Marek, Yes, you're quite right, I also suspect very strongly that they're all made in China. But the West has given the entire manufacturing process exclusively to China. The cost price over there is about 1/20th. When the high end smartphones were being sold here for 700€ +, a French documentary team set out to China to enquire about the REAL cost price. You won't believe it. 2.40€. That's how much profit the intermediaries make. It's the same for all manufactured goods. The retailers tend to use German sounding names, just to make it sound reassuring. I think Scheppach is German concept, but Asian made. No wonder Europe is in a terrible crisis. Anyway, let's enjoy woodworking. All the best.

    Thanks for your video. Some weeks ago i also bought this 1080. Today i made first tests. Same surprise with the fence, which i had to move away, when i go to the thicknesser-mode. Jointing is ok, also squaring. BUT thicknessing hat a problem. The table in the thicknesser isn't square. On 90mm width it works 0.3mm out in the hight. So in the whole width it will be out of square about 1mm. Normaly i would say, no go. But i will insert a table for the thicknesser with about 90cm (as long as the jointer tables) and this one is easy to level with some tape. I also will change the dustsuckerpart, so that i dont need to unscrew it for modechange. Yes, the shopvac is a problem. But i use a big vac from RecordPower, which has a 100mm connector. The adapter fits perfect. Nearly no chips around the machine. The integrated mesh i have killed. Has clogded at once. Bad construction. The thicknesser measurement scale ist 1mm out. Will replace it with a new measurement tape-scale. Have you bought the replacement-belt from Scheppach or in the free market? Cheerio and have a good time.

    I have bought the replacement belt first as an after-market part, and it didn't fit well, it wass ever so slightly bigger. So then I ordered original belt from Scheppach and that fit well. If you modify the wood chip extraction in a way, that you don't have to remove the fence when thicknessing, let me know how you did it, that would be a complete game-changer!!!

    Hello Marek, it's a good video, really helpful. Did you check, if the infeed and outfeed table was parallel, when you bought the machine? Because some of people says it's very frustrating and can cause problems.

  • @MarekVacek

    @MarekVacek

    Well, depends on the precision you require, but the tables seem reasonably parallel. The only issue is the fence, that is really hard to keep square.

    So I bought one, belt went pretty much immediately so looks like it could be an issue or bad batch of belts, I ordered another belt code “3PJ610” so I will wait till it arrives. Moving onto the fence, wow, it’s absolute garbage 🤦🏻‍♂️ Iv had to attach a piece of melamine to it to get it remotely square but even then the fence is ever so slightly warped so Iv had to shim it and then the bracket itself has flex so it doesn’t hold square for long, I think in the future il have to think of a new fix for the fence, perhaps machine a new bracket which is more rigid 🤔 on a whole I mainly use it for the joining function, if I had the space I would buy a large unit and get rid of this but it’s not an option 🤦🏻‍♂️

  • @MarekVacek

    @MarekVacek

    It does, if you have harder woods, you take lighter passes and it can take it, even when using full width of the blade.

  • @MarekVacek

    @MarekVacek

    11 ай бұрын

    Just take note: since this machine has only 2 blades, you can get increased tear-out on some woods. So it's not the power, but rather the low number of knives, that is the limiting factor.

    Klíňák odešel za prvních 20min. provozu. Koupil jsem origo nový (jsou dostupné) a ten už drží, takže beru že to mohl být asi vadný kus z výroby. To přehazování je problematické kvůli tomu 90° vodítku, oddělat ho/přidělat jsou 2 minuty (to by až takový problém nebyl), ale trpí tím ta pravoúhlost toho vodítka, ta je z mého pohledu úplně žalostná.
