Johntá Austin • R&B MONEY Podcast • Ep.071

Ойын-сауық

The Authority On All Things R&B !
This week on The R&B Money Podcast, Tank and J Valentine welcome the iconic songwriter Johntá Austin to wax introspective.
Taking it back to the beginning, Johntá reminisces about his first brushes with fame, from singing in church to starring in TV shows as a child. He recalls the fateful night as a teen where his life changed forever after an appearance on a legendary late night show.
Detailing his journey through the music industry, Johntá outlines his early collaborations with some of R&B’s greatest visionaries and the process of transitioning into a full-time hitmaking songwriter. He and Tank connect over the struggle all artists face, even at the height of success.
Johntá pulls back the curtain on creating timeless love songs like “Be Without You” and “We Belong Together,” analyzing what made 2005 his career-defining year. He explains how he helped discover and develop a future superstar’s iconic debut album.
At its heart, this episode is a vulnerable and real discussion about the ups and downs of the creative journey between two icons and a trailblazer who helped shape 21st century R&B music as we know it. There's no better authority than these three legends together in one room.

At 47:03:- GEM: when Tank asked who came up with the “Ooh, ooh” in Mariah’s Shake it off track. Tank is a real musical genius to even think to ask this question and it’s so cool to be educated on parts of songs that I personally would look over. I forget Mariah has an ear for song melodies and adding the “ooo ooo” in her songs like the classic “Shoe do do do do do do do” in her song “Fantasy”. Best Episode thank you ❤.

i love when the songwriters from before the super-tech era give interviews….they just have a different way of storytelling, everything they say sounds like poetry. i smiled from beginning to end of this episode & laughed a LOT (which i needed ♥️) this was a super enjoyable episode, i could watch another hour of you three conversing & sharing, it felt pure 😊

I'll never understand people's disrespect for legendary artists in the "presumed" twilight of their careers. As long as an artist's made 1 amazing album in their career then I'm hooked forever. Someone recently commented on Brandy's low record sales as of late & Usher not having enough hits to do the Superbowl. In what world do record sales = greatness b/c Brandy has the tone of life & she revolutionized BGV's & stacking? If Usher Raymond IV doesn't have enough hits, then Nobody has enough hits.

Talking about cultural impact vs charts… bring the legend Bryan Michael Cox, breaking charts and part of culture for ever! Loved Johnta’s LSR, Turn it Up, Close your Eyes… Songwriter, Singer this dude’s music is always so good and unique! P.S. you guys should put them people to work after each episode… bringing all these talents to interview them in a studio and not drop musical magic afterwards is damn near BLASPHEMOUS (in that Stephen A. Smith voice 😂)
