Johnstones aqua guard! What’s it like?

Hey KZread,
Heres a video on Johnstones new product! It’s there new fully water based durable satin paint. They have named it aqua guard even tho its not the same as the aqua system which is a hybrid.
This video contains my thoughts of the product and the difference between applying the two coats of satin straight on and using Johnstones suggested 3 coat system by applying the 2 coats over their aqua undercoat. Please note that this is just my views on the product and one mans opinion I’m not claiming to be an expert!
I’m not claiming to know everything there is to know about the product i just wanted to give you some information from someone who paints everyday and has used quite a few satin paints along the way. And just give you a real world look at Johnstones new paint to give you an idea to wether or not you will give it a try.
I also want to say this is a independent review/test and I have not been paid or anything of that nature even though that would be great! So Johnstones if you are reading this then hit me up 😉
I hope you find this video useful and if you have any questions please just drop a comment below.
If you fount this video any good then please hit that like button and i would really appreciate it if you hit that subscribe button as well 👌🏻
Thanks for watching

    Great video.Just what i was looking for.It is totally different seeing the paint being laid down in front of your eyes than reading about it in a review.This Johnstones paint looks as good as paints that are almost twice the price .I am about to paint my kitchen cabinets and after looking at all the other brands i had more or less settled on this one but you have finally convinced me.For that i Thank You.

    Hello mate, agree big time with you about aquaguard, great stuff. Wont be using anything else. I was given a sample when it first came out and have only just used it this week. I ve sprayed Johnstones acrylic durable on ceilings, walls and woodwork. Padded the woodwork down and put 2x coats of the aquaguard on. I put a bit of Flowetrol in the mix. The end product looks sprayed even tho i brushed and rollered it on. Try a 2 inch ice fusion brush, because of its really soft synthetic bristles it lays off lovely. Good vid by the way mate👍

    putsy1968 thank you mate, it is great stuff I’ve used it quite a bit now only thing I’ve fount is it loves to run. I’ve not tried sticking flowetrol in it but I may give that a go. It really does lay off nicely 👌🏻 I use the ice fusion a lot aswell it’s a great brush only problem I find is it is not magnetic so doesn’t sit in my Wooster very well 🤦🏼‍♂️

    I’ve found that a synthetic brush is essential. I was using a normal Harris brush (“suitable for all paints”), and it kept dragging. The paint didn’t want to leave the brush. I switched to a Dulux cutting in brush that I knew was definitely synthetic, and it went on like a different product, flowed easily. The difference was quite incredible.

    This was very helpful, especially the Blockade tip. Aqua Guard it is, then! Update, tried Blockade, two tips for the amateur, runny, so don't overload brush, and in summer it dried very quickly, so don't over brush

    Since it's shellac based the solvent will be alcohol and B-I-N is runny, so I'm not surprised.

  • @amuthanshan

    Haven't seen any professional painter on here carry out the obvious scratch test on any water based paint, so that's thoughtful of you. With and without undercoat was another helpful test. Strictly speaking this paint is a hybrid, it has the best of both worlds because there is a little bit of solvent added. So in theory it will eventually yellow hence why it's now sold as 'long lasting whiteness' and not 'non-yellowing' any more in their official sales pitch. I'm sure you will tell us how long the whiteness lasts in practice, it should be many years.

  • @rolfeypaints

    @rolfeypaints

    Thank you I tried to make it as good of a test as possible. And the aqua guard isn’t actually a hybrid it’s fully water based. The aqua satin and the rest of the range is a hybrid but this is there full water based version. It acts more like a pu paint so in theory it shouldn’t yellow but I will find out over time 👌🏻

  • @amuthanshan

    @amuthanshan

    You're right. The 'Aqua' in the name made me think it was in the aqua system hybrid range but it's not, so Aqua Guard should be non-yellowing. Now that I know polyurethane is the special ingredient, I'm going to investigate Bedec Aqua at my local diy store as the Johnstone's is not locally available. Thanks!

    The problem with this product is it a 3 coat system, doing a HSL could add another 2 days labour to apply third coat, not many customers would pay the extra labour cost.

    As a decorator I've been really pissed off with water based paint. It's either brush marks, ruined brushes, try this try that with this or that brush costing more to get a half decent finish or extra coats needed requiring extra cost and people might not want to pay, feel like we have had a bad deal with current offerings. The best ones cost a small fortune now. Best for me was rubbol bl satura but its gone now, idiots at dulux reckon their trade satinwood is the same but its not, had a drop of the old left over and it doesn't compare, BL wasn't perfect but the finish was top(after multiple coats!!).

    Its just as tough as scuff-x imo and levels out better. . But its very slow to apply compared to scuffx so it would probably cost you more in labour. The trick with these PU paints is to apply thickly try not to thin otherwise they will run. I use alot of caporal PU satin which is alittle more forgiving imo. Trying everal aqua 40 at the moment in New white
