John Dawson "Johnny" Winter III (born February 23, 1944) is an American blues guitarist, singer, and producer. Best known for his late 1960s and 1970s high-energy blues-rock albums and live performances, Winter also produced three Grammy Award-winning albums for blues legend Muddy Waters. Since his time with Waters, Johnny Winter has recorded several Grammy-nominated blues albums and continues to tour extensively. In 1988, he was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame and in 2003, he was ranked 63rd in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time".
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Johnny Winter has been a guitar hero without equal. Signing to Columbia records in 1969 called largest solo artist deal of it's time, Johnny immediately laid out the blueprint for his fresh take on classic blues a prime combination for the legions of fans just discovering the blues via the likes of Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton. Constantly shifting between simple country blues in the vein of Robert Johnson, to all-out electric slide guitar blues-rock, -- Johnny has always been one of the most respected singers and guitar players in rock and the clear link between British blues-rock and American Southern rock (a la the Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd.) Throughout the '70s and '80s, Johnny was the unofficial torch-bearer for the blues, championing and aiding the careers of his idols like Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker.
Today Johnny Winter is enjoying an unparalleled resurgence performing to sold out shows worldwide even after a long life full of honors and accomplishments such as a triumphant appearance at Eric Clapton's Crossroads Festival with Derek Trucks, Buddy Guy and Clapton that has been immortalized on the Emmy award winning DVD. In a ceremony with Slash presenting in Nashville, Gibson Guitars released the signature Johnny Winter Firebird guitar that has been his beloved trademark for years. A Live through the 70s DVD is a hit along with his Live Bootleg Series CDs that have all entered the Top 10 Billboard Blues charts. Two unique instructional DVDs have been produced by Cherry Lane/Hal Leonard to the gratitude of players around the world. Always one for special appearances he recently performed with the Allman Brothers at the Beacon Theater in Manhattan on the 40th anniversary of their debut
Winter produced three Grammy Award-winning albums by Muddy Waters, Hard Again (1977), I'm Ready (1978), and Muddy "Mississippi" Waters -- Live (1979). Several Winter albums were also nominated for Grammy Awards.[6] In 1980, Winter was on the cover of the first issue of Guitar World and in 1988, he was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame. There was a character in the video game Heavy Rain named after Winter.

Sad, He's only 55 yrs old here. Iast time I saw him was 1988 and he still had the fire and the Johnny growl! He was one of the best. Pray he's in the arms of the Lord.

Rob Bob his health seemed to take such a drastic turn so quickly....I also saw him in '88 still strong and killin' it. Two years later a shadow of his former self. His final album found him regaining his fire, but COPD cut it short for him....still, a huge legacy of awesome performances, not to mention a generation of current virtuosos who cut their teeth on JW !

It hurts me to tears to see this. I saw him seven times between 96 and 2005. It was almost exactly the same every time. The first time I saw him a grown man cried and walked out.

I saw Johnny play at the Bottom Line in NYC right at this time 1999 and it was shocking to say the least after having seen him at least 30 times since 1975...he was never the same...so sad..several years later he did sign my 76 firebird and for that I am grateful to him.

I was lucky enough to see him in 1994 & 95 at Jake's in Springfield VA. He was incredible! Hard to believe this is him with the same guitar a few years latter. I'm glad to hear he's doing better these days.

He only did 2 years of heroin, then he was on a drug trying to get him off heroin for over 30 years. His old manager abused it and made him this way. Luckily near the end of his life he got taken off them and regained a decent amount of himself

Sad to see him in this condition but his playin is still very, very good. It's always very calmed down in his 1999 performances, but some songs songs don't loose any quality. The version of "hideaway" in the beginning of this video is exciting - it's just not as aggressive as usual and sometimes JW is strugglin with he timing. But this is a rehearsal..

Well he got tired and sick because his management it was kinda weird watching him kinda shake back and forth and repeat the turn around so often. I saw Johnny in the 70s and 80s probably 30 times.I saw him on the captured live tour whew that was some hot playing

Some time ago the LAZER brand listed the most famous guitarists who had or played on their guitars and there was no Jonnhy Winter in the list. LOL he is the only guitarist I know who played this guitar all the other cheeks of the stratocaster, the telecaster, Les Paul, SG.... it makes me laugh.
