hltv.org was started in early 2000s, but it became mainstream around ~2007ish (?!), but at those times gotfrag.com was the leading esport news site.

ancient cs, with what version did eSports begin and in what year?

the first big tournament was CPL Dallas in 2001 (if I remember right) and they were playing CS1.0/1.1 not sure which :)

@@kHRISl33t if I understand correctly you are talking about cpl winter 2001 x3 vs nip, I would like to know if there were any minor tournaments before 2001

according to liqupedia, there were cpl summer 2000 and cpl cologne 2000

@@soprancheg7551 of course, there were, but the first "major" with a big prize pool (150k USD) was CPL Dallas in 2001. The first CPL tournament where CS was introduced was in 2000 (CS1.0 possibly). I can't think/find CS events before that :) I consider CPL as the first big event for CS.

It seems to me that there were tournaments until 2001, only they were amateur, even in 1999 when there was a beta cs they organized tournaments)))
