It would have been interesting to see what they would have been if the lead singer wasn't such a downer. As I understand it, Marr would write the instrumental then Moz would generally add the melancholy lyrics, even if was an upbeat tune.

Strange thing is that Johnny Marr is only four years older than Noel but because he was only 19 when The Smiths became huge and 23 when they split up it seems like he has been around for longer. He’s been famous for nearly 40 years. He wrote this song when he was 20, which is incredible.

I think we could all agree that was epic… I don’t think any of us thought that Johnny Marr could pull that off as good as he did. Remember people, this was Live television and it sounded unbelievable! I give him a lot of credit for what it took to get in front of millions of people and actually own that song. There should be not one negative comment, whatsoever… He deserves a big applause, he created that original guitar sound… Timeless and Eternally priceless

Well, he actually transcends his own source material here. That guitar work in the last two minutes.... pretty much the coolest guitarist of the last 35 years right there. Everything is about creating musicality and excitement. Nothing is about wearing technique as a badge. You understand that here, and you understand why Clapton’s Spoonful live is great, too.

Marr must be a rock photographer's dream - he never throws a bad shape when playing - totally cool throughout. Only Prince could match him for sheer coolness while playing. Effortless, but full of passion. Guitar God!

Therefore most of the audience probably isn't emotionally or that artistically invested in it. That wicked guitar slide at 0:15 , etc. Sounds like a train locomotive passing a fixed spot at a super speed - creepy cool. Such great percussion and instrumentation. Superb track and performance!

Will forever remember getting up, hungover as hell after a night of drinking, flipping on the motel room TV, and hearing charmed's version of the song... I never watched the show, but remember my cousin absolutely loving it when it was first airing, so to hear this song as the opening woke my ass up pretty quick. Crazy how music works

I saw him perform this live. Just amazing. Although I’ve seen Morrissey live too and his vocal is still as it ever was. Better still, I saw the Smiths live many years ago when I was a student in Brixton London. Now that was special. Good to see they are keeping their music alive for a new generation. Genius guitar man, top ten of all time.

The technical mastery it took to record this song was incredible. After Marr and producer John Porter finally got it, they spent the next several months trying to figure out how to play it live. Andy Rourke call the song a curse. Great to listen to, impossible to reproduce.

Marr is fantastic, but Morrisey is the star, the male siren, the charisma and so very unique. So as brilliant as Marr is, there are thousands upon thousands of guitarists who can recreate his sound, but there is not one person alive who can be Morrisey, sometimes Morrisey can't even be Morrisey.

So as brilliant as Morrisey is, there are thousands upon thousands of singers who can recreate his sound, but there is not one person alive who can be Marr,, sometimes Marr isn't even as good as Marr is.

It would have been interesting to see what they would have been if the lead singer wasn't such a downer. As I understand it, Marr would write the instrumental then Moz would generally add the melancholy lyrics, even if was an upbeat tune.

Strange thing is that Johnny Marr is only four years older than Noel but because he was only 19 when The Smiths became huge and 23 when they split up it seems like he has been around for longer. He’s been famous for nearly 40 years. He wrote this song when he was 20, which is incredible.

I think we could all agree that was epic… I don’t think any of us thought that Johnny Marr could pull that off as good as he did. Remember people, this was Live television and it sounded unbelievable! I give him a lot of credit for what it took to get in front of millions of people and actually own that song. There should be not one negative comment, whatsoever… He deserves a big applause, he created that original guitar sound… Timeless and Eternally priceless

This is definitely a studio song because it has so much feel but this is the best version i have heard live by far!
The depth of texture and complexity Marr adds to the original is breathtaking.

Well, he actually transcends his own source material here. That guitar work in the last two minutes.... pretty much the coolest guitarist of the last 35 years right there. Everything is about creating musicality and excitement. Nothing is about wearing technique as a badge. You understand that here, and you understand why Clapton’s Spoonful live is great, too.

Epic. How fking cool was that. I’m not entirely sure the immediate audience fully appreciates what they’ve just witnessed. Sheer class at work. Superb work Mr. Marr and a MASSIVE shout to the rest of the rhythm section, emulating Joyce and Rouke is no easy task. Fking brilliant lads.

Marr must be a rock photographer's dream - he never throws a bad shape when playing - totally cool throughout. Only Prince could match him for sheer coolness while playing. Effortless, but full of passion. Guitar God!

Therefore most of the audience probably isn't emotionally or that artistically invested in it. That wicked guitar slide at 0:15 , etc. Sounds like a train locomotive passing a fixed spot at a super speed - creepy cool. Such great percussion and instrumentation. Superb track and performance!

Watched this loads of times. Can't believe how tight these guys are. Brilliant.
What a great performance, everything is just perfect!
Will forever remember getting up, hungover as hell after a night of drinking, flipping on the motel room TV, and hearing charmed's version of the song... I never watched the show, but remember my cousin absolutely loving it when it was first airing, so to hear this song as the opening woke my ass up pretty quick. Crazy how music works

+MrPge1970 On that point, the song would be 1000% better without the depressing as hell lyrics. The tune soars, but the words make you want to jump down a well. I always wished this tune had different lyrics or even was just an instrumental.
Just an absolute stunner of a rendition. Sonic as fuck, Johnny in the zone and his voice at least in this song comes very close to Mozz's sound. A blinder...

The technical mastery it took to record this song was incredible. After Marr and producer John Porter finally got it, they spent the next several months trying to figure out how to play it live. Andy Rourke call the song a curse. Great to listen to, impossible to reproduce.
