It would have been interesting to see what they would have been if the lead singer wasn't such a downer. As I understand it, Marr would write the instrumental then Moz would generally add the melancholy lyrics, even if was an upbeat tune.

Remember people, this was Live television and it sounded unbelievable! I give him a lot of credit for what it took to get in front of millions of people and actually own that song. There should be not one negative comment, whatsoever… He deserves a big applause, he created that original guitar sound… Timeless and Eternally priceless

+Gem Faulkner Look Marr regardless of musical talent has done fk all outside of The Smiths. Saw him support The Stone Roses and was pretty shite. Morrissey seems to of done quite well though post Smiths.

+MrPge1970 On that point, the song would be 1000% better without the depressing as hell lyrics. The tune soars, but the words make you want to jump down a well. I always wished this tune had different lyrics or even was just an instrumental.

The technical mastery it took to record this song was incredible. After Marr and producer John Porter finally got it, they spent the next several months trying to figure out how to play it live. Andy Rourke call the song a curse. Great to listen to, impossible to reproduce.
