You know, when I see Johnny here, I don't see a man in his thirties high on amphetamines, destructive and angry. I see a little boy scared and completely broken seeing his big brother cut almost in half, in blood, and then dying. I see a troubled boy, being struck by guilt all his life. A boy who saw his mother's worst day. A boy who was not supported so much by his father. A boy who needed to fight these demons in some ways. A boy finding amphetamines and then getting drained by them, sleepless, weary and so so lonely. I can really understand what June saw in him and why she had this strong urge to fight for him. And thank God she did.

Anita is the perfect person to sing that high part of this song. Her voice is literally like an angel's. Johnny looks like he has been doing some hard living and does not feel at all well. He looks like he's at least 20 or 30 pounds underweight. I'm so glad he got through this terrible place alive! He was truly dancing with the devil but fortunately he won!

Absolutely angelic..the Carter family and Johnnys's deep voice blended together in a signature sound that made them famous as no other couple!

And I just learned today that the Carter Family here are in my ancestral lineage. Awesome! Great song too.

Anita Carter...I'm unsure how to describe her voice. One thing's for certain though, whenever I hear her sing, her voice travels straight through me.

Wow this was right in the middle of Johnny's drug addiction. Those ladies were dealing with alot around this time. They're actually my cousins- poor Anita passed away way too early.

This was at the end of his drug addiction, he had been addicted to or taking amphetamines and Barbiturates(?) since 1958 on top of heavy drinking. By 1967 he kicked his habit. This is in 1966

My gosh Anita was fabulous.

I always loved Johnny Cash but Anita Carter sang like an Angel from heaven.

It's a depressing song anyway about a murder of an innocent man.

Legendary performances are timeless, powerful, soul changin', spiritual in nature, and will leave all others in the dust...this is one of those performances!

Blessed Easter everyone.

Close your eyes and imagine listening to the glorified angels singing in perfect harmony while sitting along the crystal sea in the shadow of the Holy Throne of God...the Carter ladies are as close as you get here on Earth!

Regardless of one's religious views this is great, the harmony of the Carters and the background music, perfection, Johnny does look a little stoned and this was done much later than 1960 due to the quality of the color picture, probably about 1966 like one other posted. I grew up with the music of Johnny Cash and never tire of listening to him, whether he was stoned or sober.

i love johnny cash but,lets face it,the carters are the crown of country music and anita carter is the crown jewel

Helen was probably the most talented of the girls. Anita was the prettiest and June being a typical middle child had the stand out personality.

I love that little parlor guitar he's holding, and sometimes playing!

one of the most endearing things i find about Johnny Cash is the Gospel music he sings. A man who sang these songs with conviction and sincerity!

My heart always cries out each and every time I hear this old gospel song, since it did the very first time I heard it. The Carter Family's background vocals adds intensity to the lyrics. This beautiful song gave me chills when I first heard it and still gives me chills every time I play it. One of the most beautiful gospel songs ever! Johnny got off the stool and out of the picture so the Carters could have the stage to themselves. A very sensitive move and anyone who finds trouble with it needs to reevaluate their sensitivity to others.

Johnny was just a regular guy like all of us-good and evil doing battle-I'll see you in heaven John!

Anita's voice brings a tear to my eye. And I was just listening to black metal for a while.

The Carter family's vocal harmonies on this song are so powerful. Personally, I see gospel music as just music and do not seek any guidance nor truth from it. However, I greatly admire the performance here by Johnny and The Carter Family.
