That was the last time he played the piano. June died about 3 months later, Johnny 6 months after June. This is such a different song from the 9" Nails - the difference from youth and old age with all the regrets encumbered along the way. So beautiful, so haunting. I'm 72 and feel all those emotions. It was Trevor's song, had some regrets that he let Johnny do this. When he saw the video he changed his mind and said, "It's Johnny's song now". Johnny changed one word only.

Trent Reznor has said that this song belongs to Cash. This version absolutely beautiful and is seen as the best version of the song by many people. I do like that the original version and Cash's versions take on two different meanings though, great way to cover a song and make it your own

Rollingstone had an article years ago titled something like ' the most self destructive artists of all time' Johnny Cash was high up on the list. multiple arrests, alcoholism, drug use. womanizing in his younger years. He illustrates that pain in this video. you can definitely feel it. He never recorded another song or did another video. I understand after closing that piano at the end he never opened it again. This really was the end.

Johnny Cash lived these lyrics. He had his own demons as much as any rock and roll musician ever. He made this song his own from the original by Nine Inch Nails. When his kids saw that video they said it sounds like you are saying goodbye and he said I am.

It’s an amazing song that connects with so many people because we have all experienced heartache and loss and pain and regret. Man Johnny can make you feel it. I’m a grown ass man and I cry every time I see this. You can have my empire of dirt. It’s just stuff at the end of the day and it does nothing. When you get to where Johnny was during this all that stuff means nothing, only the relationships with you, God, yourself, your friends and your family are important. RIP Johnny Cash the Man in Black

For a look behind the scenes here, look up on here Hurt Behind The Scene. I heard he was in pretty good spirits during the recording but he knew anyway, knew this was his goodbye, his wife June wasn't supposed to be in this but out of concern, she came downstairs to check on him and that look of concern on her face on the stairs was genuine. Cash lived 100 lifetimes of regret and sorrow and it showed on his face and yet he overcame it all and in the end achieved total redemption. The video was shot in bitterly cold weather in Nashville in February 2003. Three months later, June Carter Cash, the musician's wife of 35 years, died. Johnny Cash himself died on 12 September 2003, I think he just didn't want to be alone anymore, I saw the 2 of them live June 1980, they did a set in NJ at some kind of festival concert and I walked an hour to the stadium and made sure I got close, about 30-40 feet away I think and there he was, the legend, the man in black with his wife and his band, The Great Eighties /8, I remember being just awestruck and feeling Holy Crap, It's him. Just a highlight of my entire life.

Although he was only 71 when this video was shot, he looks to be 100. It was released in February 2003, 3 months later his wife June died, and Johnny died in September. He told his daughter this was good by. This video is the #1 watched music video in history. Even the original writer and performer of the song said it no longer belongs to him. It's Johnny Cash's. This %was Johnny's last big contribution to the music world and it was 100% first class.

What’s so special about Johnny Cash is that it doesn’t matter what genre of music you love the most because everyone loves Johnny Cash. He went through a failed marriage, drug abuse issues and criminal charges and he came through the other side. He wore black to honor the poor and the downtrodden and the least of us. He was against the Vietnam War. He performed in prisons because he understood those people weren’t animals. They were human beings that were paying for their crimes like he did. And while I’m an atheist JC was a devout Christian who used his faith to reach people instead of passing judgment and hating people. This is the final gift JC left for us and I cannot think of a more precious gift. I’m new to your channel and subbed. I look forward to more of y’alls content!

In one interview Trent Reznor said he was mad at first to hear that Johnny Cash was going to record his best song. But after hearing the song, he was not so upset but once Trent saw the video, he said I wrote a good song, John Cash just made it a great song. I have to agree, I loved the original Nine Inch Nails version, but Johnny's version takes it beyond great, he made it immortal.

Great reaction video. Saw a comment on another reaction to this elsewhere that said (paraphrasing a bit) the difference to this and the NIN version is that Trent sings like hes angry and annoyed about his demons whereas Johnny has made peace with his. Something different you have a look at is Paolo Nutini - Iron Sky (Live at Abbey Road Studio). That and the Hurt video are among the very few songs I never tire of watching and revisit frequently as both have massive meaning to me

The most powerful imagery in the video as well as Cash’s most intense emotions come with the images of Jesus, who he sang about often throughout his career. Grimacing while Jesus is being nailed to the cross knowing that his own sins were some of those that Christ died for along with all those who repentant believe. Johnny believed and believes even more fully now the true saying that “Only one life, it will soon be passed, only what’s done for Christ will last.” Thanks for the reaction.
