    I'm going to have to call BS on the gay aspect of being banned. Charles Nelson Reilly was very gay and Johnny didn't care. Johnny had him on more than any other guest.

  • @MetFan37

    @MetFan37

    Charles lived close to the studio, and whenever a guest didn't make it, the talent coordinator called Charles as a back-up. Johnny did have him on more than any other guest. So you're right to call BS - it was probably just Mario Cantone's humor that wasn't tolerated.

    Cantone’s incident was in 1986, height of AIDS crisis. It was so common to discriminate against gay men then. Nothing would surprise me. FWIW, Cantone puts the incident on the talent booker not Johnny.

    Wow, this is strange. The queen of gay camp humor, Bette Midler who is royalty to many gay men, seemed to love Johnny Carson. In fact, on his last show she sang his favorite song to him in an emotional farewell. Bette Midler is a first class act and if Johnny Carson was a vicious homophobe she would not have had anything to do with him.

Tommy and Dickie Smothers shown on this video on Johnny's show ; also have a comedy recording called Hiawatha that was h*m*syyxual , about wanting to physically kick women , and be Hiawatha's "bunny" . First, he didn't treat all guests badly. The only guests he treated badly, were never invited back. You have to understand, and it was mentioned in this mini documentary, if you were given time to perform on Johnny's stage and, especially if you were a comedian and had made Johnny laugh during your set you were invited to sit in chairs beside Johnny. If a performer received Johnny's seal of approval it virtually made someone's career. That's why his show went on for 30 years. Johnny was king of nighttime talk show hosts.

    Johnny's mother lived in Phoenix. I worked with one of the nurses that cared for her over the years. She said the mother was a beast and when Johnny would visit, at her demand, he would cower to her. She ridiculed him in front of the help including the nurse. She said this when on for years. No wonder he hated his mother.

    @@metro3692 Of course you and I know there's nothing wrong with being gay. But men in Johnny's era like John Wayne were homophobic. Wayne Newton wasn't gay, but for some reason and I can only attribute it to his increasing alcoholism (Picked Brain) in the beginning of their relationship Johnny was good toward Wayne Newton but as the years went by Johnny turned on him. Don't know if someone caused Johnny to change toward Newton but he was merciless in his insults toward Newton. Questioning his masculinity, picking on his singing voice, his mannerisms, etc. Newton, as mentioned in the interview confronted Johnny to his face and told him he would clean his clock if he didn't stop because Johnny's insults were effecting his persona/livelihood. If I remember correctly Newton had to take Johnny to court. Just as an aside. John Wayne has always portrayed himself as a real man. There was an interview with Kirk Douglas where Kirk shares that when John Wayne heard that Kirk accepted the part of Spartacus, Wayne asked him "Why in the world would you want to do this?" Kirk said why what's wrong? Wayne's response was having to do with the "skirt" that Kirk as Spartacus is wearing. He also predicted that it would ruin Kirk's career. Of course, it didn't. I believe Kirk said Wayne wouldn't talk to him for a long time after that.

    I highly doubt that Johnny Carson was an angel. However, is / was anyone in Hollywood? He lived most of his life in a spotlight, and I would assume (I know the consequences of saying this word) that this is not an easy feat. All that I can say is that he entertained millions of people, at a time when the world was allowed to have a sense of humor without getting bent out of shape. I, for one miss those days. He had several prominently outright gay / lesbian guests on his show. Perhaps the beefs he had with these people stemmed from issues behind the scenes, and we won’t know the truth as the man is deceased. He gave hundreds of people the stairway to stardom. If others weren’t lucky enough to have an opportunity to have a guest appearance, perhaps it had to do with the writers, studio executives, or producers? It was a show meant to entertain, and bottom line make money just like every other show on television. Would I like to have had his money, absolutely, would I like to be hounded every moment of my life by the paparazzi NO!! His life was one in a zillion. I enjoyed the opportunities that I had to watch him in action. Some shows were better than others. I watched the final show knowing that history was ending. My friends couldn’t understand my desire to watch, nor sadness for the end of an era. I wasn’t even born when he took the helm, but I watched when he bowed out gracefully. Bette Midler brought me to tears. I understood why she ran off stage. I too was aghast that this was the end. Johnny Carson wasn’t perfect, but then again show me anyone who is?

"You - just you are offered the contract..... not your brother " ...... Wayne Newton TOOK THE OFFER - dispatching his own brother ..... for a break in show business. Carson was a driven man .... made his own way, created a fortune in mutual benefit to He & the Network ..... true he was a stickler and cold businessman .... but, many are, most do well to be clear and consistent when dealing with those that determine the quality and standards of the show SO LONG AND TIRELESSLY worked for. Wayne had talent ... but, not loyalty, style and knowledge of what persona to allow .... his life is no different than others making choices and difficult decisions. This may change minds of a man GONE ... and easily spoke ill about now .... but, My Opinion of Wayne Newton has deteriorated as well.

    I think Johnny also believed in the dictum of "if you're gay, please don't tell me and don't act gay on my show!" Liberace was on the show many times and there was the gift of the piano. I think, first Liberace had power in friends and public stature. Also, Liberace was hiding the fact the he was gay. Of course, everyone knew he was gay so he wasn't fooling anyone but himself. He really thought he was pulling off the demeanor of a straight man. So, in his advancing years he finally made public that he was gay and was genuinely surprised at the public's lack of reaction or curiosity.

    There is a lot about all of this that really seems and smells off. Before things went pear shaped between Carson & Rivers, he (Carson) knew that Rivers had a massive gay following. I can understand what caused the rift professionally between them as he would've seen her as a threat or the network and producers told to many tales out of school flipping Carson into paranoid mode. Let's look at what could've played out if Carson dropped in ratings to Joan and faced cancellation, not only would Carson be out of a job, so would his Producer, the network would've lost millions in advertising dollars by advertisers, when there is so much at risk the network and Producer firstly and foremost would've been out to save their best interests, themselves to them Carson would've been collateral damage and who better to do their dirty work for them to avoid a publicity scandal? Carson. And what's to say that some of the advertisers or sponsors were homophobic and threatened to pull their money and spend it elsewhere if the gay overtones or openly gay guests weren't removed from the equation? Also to the best of my knowledge I have never heard Joan say that he was a homophobe in any interviews that I've seen when asked about the rift between her and Carson. This now brings me to Bette Midler who has one of the hugest if not hugest gay followings in the world. Bette was still working the Continental Baths at the time of her first appearance on Carson and this topic was touched on briefly in conversation between the two. Like Joan, Bette also made numerous appearances on the show throughout her carer and was also the very last guest and gave the show it's very last musical performance. Homophobes tend to steer clear of people who have large gay followings such as Joan & Bette and tend not to socialise with people who have gay friends even in a non show business seance because homophobes don't like being confronted about their phobia (unless the person is an uneducated redneck who's thoughts by pass his or hers brain and comes out of their mouths, hence the term "Talking shit.") Sorry for the essay of a comment, I tend to get on my soap box when people in the subject matter are no longer around to defend or speak out anymore.

    Newton's narrative here is pretty silly. I say this as a senior, and I don't mean high school. The rumors about Wayne began long, long before the kerfuffle with Carson. He was plump, curvy-hipped, and strawberry blond when he was a pre-teen with a high voice. Also, his manner was cutesy. I would see him on variety shows like Jackie Gleason. He got his biggest TV exposure, when older, on The Lucy Show, and it's still up on YT and it's easy to see why kids at my junior high called him names, but I admit I didn't know what they meant. Older still, he became big in Las Vegas, and Johnny was very competitive. I did see Johnny make fun of Wayne occasionally and by that time I knew exactly what he meant. I highly doubt Wayne, or anybody, could just walk in on Johnny Carson, unannounced, past NBC security, and tell his producer to amscray. Wayne was larger, but Carson was a military veteran who had taken up boxing there. Carson could more than hold his own against Newton, who, I assure you, made this confrontation up. It was around that time Wayne got married to a pretty Hawaiian airline stewardess, maybe as a beard, but she didn't know it. She divorced him, claiming physical abuse. Later still, Newton reinvented himself as we know him now: bulked up, jet black hair, debonair mustache.

I thought this was a time when people had thicker skin, and could take a joke. Those are days I miss because you can’t say a damn thing anymore without someone taking offense. Also, as far as I can tell Wayne Newton has done just fine in life. I deeply appreciate his work with the USO, and I cannot imagine Johnny Carson berating him for any charity work helping the military since he served. I realize JC may have also had a beef with Bob Hope who also did a tremendous amount of work for the USO, however both of these men are dead, and cannot speak for themselves. The amount of entertainment that all of them have contributed to the world is astounding, and to be commended. Our planet needs more entertainment, happiness, love, peace, and acceptance than ever before because we’re in a horrible situation. I’d rather have people stop talking about one another, posting nasty content about something, start growing thicker skin, stop getting offended so easily, and think about how we can grow together instead of dividing ourselves so much that we (at least in the USA) might be on the verge of Civil War II. 🤞

    @@lauranowak3632 "Who the hell cares?" You're clearly middle-aged, not senior enough to grasp how destructive gay rumors and jokes could be to an actor or entertainer back then. If the public actually took Carson's repeated barbs seriously, it could have wrecked Newton's career as he tried to transition (no pun) his stage persona. Consider that even today, there is not one single openly gay male actor who is A-list, above-the-title in an action or romantic movie. In a business of emoting, singing, dancing, makeup, costumes... not a single one. Carson was putting Wayne's career on the line on national TV, and knew Wayne couldn't publicly fight back. This is not about being thick or thin-skinned about humor and "can't we all get along?" TV comics hurled all sorts of race, religion, ethnic, "take my wife" jokes- almost always stale and unfunny yet not harmful. But homosexuality was and IS different altogether. It was and is a poison pill, a deal-breaker, and career buster. Like most great comics, Carson was mean, and went over the line about Wayne, but he wasn't exactly lying. Fun Fact: Newton's first name is really Carson.

    @@akrenwinkle I grew up in a very homophobic home. My brother is gay, and has clearly stated if my father were still alive he wouldn’t even be living in this country that’s how bad my life was in my household was for 17 years until my Dad died. He was physically, emotionally, and mentally abusive to all 3 of us. So don’t preach to me how bad “homosexuality” was back in those days. I’m fully aware, NOW. However, I didn’t understand why our lives were made so difficult until I got older and realized how IGNORANT people were in those days over absolutely NOTHING! If Carson was a BASTARD, and I was under the impression that he was an entertainer forgive me. Yes, I am about to turn 55 in 6 weeks, but my life has been no prize. I lived amongst a bunch of bigots, my Dad was the epitome of Archie Bunker, and my grandmother was absolutely prejudiced against blacks. Perhaps the “barbs” that you’re speaking of that the public didn’t wholeheartedly take seriously, we’re beginning to move on with the times as they should have! Carson was an entertainer, not the end all be all. We are currently going backwards, and it disgusts me to a point that I don’t understand what happened to my country. My statement was an opinion, and an opinion only. If it is incorrect, then again I apologize. If you want times to change, then talk to your constituents…

    Carson had many gate keepers, he also didn’t like people making fun of or talking about anyone behind their backs .

    I believe that NBC forced Johnny to take Bob Hope as a guest whenever Bob wanted to appear on the Tonight Show, as Bob was a big draw. I don't think he liked that

    You keep mentioning many of the comedians out there getting a start on Johnny Carson and you forgot one major star Joan Rivers!
