John Wright's Foraging Guide

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In these challenging times, when it is hard to go to the shops and when you do choices are limited, why not have a go at foraging? With John's help, you can enjoy the abundance of wild food that nature has to offer. Just remember that unnecessary trips are not permitted, so make this part of your daily exercise and stay close to home and choose places where you are unlikely to bump into others.

Totally agree! It's great to see John in action telling us what to look out for; he's such a knowledgeable guy! I'd love to do a proper foraging tour with him at River Cottage HQ! There's a 10 disc collection box, which I think you can get on auction sites, but an anniversary one would be awesome! I would TRULY love to see these guys re-release River Cottage Everyday back on DVD. The few copies that were released are non existent now. They have some of my favourite episodes in the whole of the series. :D :D :D

They have one. A few years ago I bought the River Cottage dvd collection and the thing didn’t even include all the series. So annoying. It was just the specials - Summer, Gone Fishing and so on.

You can actually boil and leech out the bitterness of the root, before using it. We used to do this in the boy scouts and fry the roots afterwards, instead of fried potatoes.

Dandelion root coffee taste so much nicer than store bought coffee... it contains iron, zinc, calcium and potassium... rich in vitamins B, C, A & D ... and the roasted form of the root contains probiotics and antioxidants...

Chicory roots also can be used for "coffee drink" substitute since it's in the same family as a dandelion.

Thanks for these tips, I've never thought of using dandelion root before. Where I live people usually use the young leaves in spring (before the buds show in the middle of the rosette) to make a salad: vinaigrette, bacon bits, mashed boiled eggs. It's still a bitter leaf, but not unlike other salad leaves (radicchio, etc.).

The very young bud can actually be used raw instead of hazel nuts. It is not very bitter yet. And I think there is actually an old River Cottage episode where John and Pam makes some dandelion jam (!) out of the flower petals. (Dandelion is my favorite beginner foraging thing. Great with kids!)
