"No one ever complained about the cold on Hoth. We never felt it. Although we were blinded by the blizzards, *we could see the final end of the rebellion* in our blaster sights. On that day, on that planet our blood ran hot with dreams of victory. Melting the Ice that stood in our way." "As the rebels fled, the 501st gathered around the burning bunker, they let out a cheer that shook the stars. The *Rebellion* was done. Death star was being rebuilt bigger than ever, order have finally returned to the galaxy. *And no small part due to the efforst of the fighting men of the 501st.* "

I think 10:40 - 11:37 highlights what made this battle and movie so good. The rebels get their small victories, destroying a walker here and there, but the Empire is just so unstoppable that it doesn't matter. This battle really did a great job of showing what fighting the Empire was like through most of the war. The idea that no matter what you did they could just keep coming.
@MediumRareOpinions

It does sorta feel very deceptive. The triumphant Star Wars theme is playing, but it slowly becomes more and more desperate sounding, as it's not about winning a battle, but trying to escape total destruction.

It's such a maliciously gleeful reprise of the Imperial March, almost like its saying: "nowhere to run now, rebel scum!"
Maybe the most impressive and resourceful extended musical sequence of Williams' whole career--and way up there in the entire history of cinema
True Story: I actually found an autographed copy of The Empire Strikes Back Novelization at Goodwill! Inside were the autographs of John Morton (Dak Ralter himself!) and Donald F. Gult (the book's author!). An autographed copy of the ESB novelization and it was sitting on the Goodwill shelf for $1.99!!! It's now a fine addition to my collection.
Starting at the 4-minute mark exactly, simply one of the best pieces of movie music of all time. It's so intense, it's like heavy metal played with orchestra. Love the military-style theme and the general cacophony that follows. Such a crazy piece, full of invention.

"Rogue Leader, the imperials have landed on Hoth and are moving in our direction! The rebel transports are preparing for evacuation. Take Rogue Squadron to Outpost Beta and intercept any imperial forces you may find! We'll need all the time you can buy." "Luke, the crew at Outpost Beta is also manning the ion canon. It's providing cover for our transports and their escorts." "Copy that, Wedge. Rogues, if we lose Outpost Beta, this evacuation won't get past those star destroyers! Alright rogues, stay tight!" Instant respect to anyone who gets this reference.

If only Dolphin could actually run the gamecube Rogue Squadron games. Terrible framerate, despite having a system which is overkill for it.
5:02 I'll never stop thinking of this part as "The Moment Where It Began To Go Down For Rebels" in this battle.
Also, I absolutely love how, when the actual battle music for Hoth plays about 4:30 in, the drums and low brass instruments actually simulate the AT-ATs walking, while the more frantic overtures simulate the Snowspeeders.
Holy crap I only just realized, the battle music literally tries to mimic the sound of the AT-ATs walking. How on earth did I notice this before! It's genius, and most noticeable at 5:13, and 6:05, with the lower instruments.
This song perfectly highlights the magic of John Williams and the genius in the way the music perfectly assists every plot point, every narrative beat. It's magical and powerful in every way. It also sounds real frickin good
Is it just me, or is the AT-AT in the bottom right corner facing the other way? Its like it got up and said "FUCK THE CIVIL WAR! I'M OUTTA HERE!"
